The Druze constitute a "genetic nature reserve"

Today's Druze represent descendants of dynasties of people who lived and developed in the Near East for tens of thousands of years. This is what a comprehensive study conducted by Technion and Rambam researchers revealed.

The Druze population of about one million people live in northern Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, with a mysterious history and a thousand-year-old religion that is a very monotheistic religion, but apart from that it is prone to secrecy.

In the latest issue of the scientific journal PLoSONE reports on a research group led by Professor Karl Skortsky from the Faculty of Medicine and the Rappaport Research Institute, who serves as the deputy of the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

The group of geneticists, which includes Dr. Liran Shloush and Dr. Doron Behar, with other students and work partners from Prof. Skortsky's laboratory and other laboratories in the world, revealed some of these secrets. Based on the study of the DNA markers in the genome segments that indicate descent from the mother's side (mitochondrial DNA) and descent from the father's side (Y chromosome), the research team discovered that despite a thousand years of endogamy (marriage within the community), in the Druze population the original shade can still be observed in the lineages Pedigree on both sides (father and mother). This diversity even preceded the official "proclamation" of the Druze religion by tens of thousands of years.

Using a unique sampling method, the researchers were able to show more than 150 such parental genealogies - an extremely high number relative to a small, cohesive and geographically limited population. Even more surprising is the discovery that the number of mutations that distinguish each lineage from its companion shows that the lineages separated from each other genetically thousands of years ago - and still remain geographically close to each other. The pattern expected from such ancestral lineages of such ancient genetic origin is a wide geographic distribution. Indeed, ties of neighboring dynasties to each other are found (infrequently) all over the planet - but only among the Druze population does this variation remain at such high levels in such a defined and geographically bounded population. This means that the difference itself developed among the ancestors of the present-day Druze. The researchers therefore speculate that the Druze provide a sort of 'snapshot' of the genetic architecture of the Near East. In other words, today's Druze represent descendants of dynasties of people who lived and developed in the Near East for tens of thousands of years. While many descendants have migrated and settled around the world, the original lineages are frequently preserved in the original geographic areas of the Near East. Explanations for that "genetic nature reserve" can include, among other things, the Druze's preference to live in protected mountainous areas, and to keep a distance from political and national rivals.

These findings are in line with the Druze religious tradition, according to which the ancestors of the Druze lived for thousands of years, before the actual foundation of the religion ("Al-Dawa") in 1017. The research also has important public implications in the fields of medicine and medical research, in the context of genetic diseases. Based on the surprising finding of multiple parental lineages, it can be assumed that genetic counseling in the Druze community should be based on a family basis and not a general one. Furthermore, the Druze population provides an ideal opportunity to decipher the genetic contribution to specific disease states in those genomic segments that differ in the different lineages discovered.

  1. This proves that our ancestors lived here before the monotheistic religions, including Judaism. There is no paradox. After all, there have been people here since time immemorial, when Abraham and his descendants arrived and settled, some embraced Judaism, when Jesus began his gospel, some embraced his Torah, and when the Muslims conquered the land, some converted to Islam, there were people here.

As the Druze religion spread, some of these people and others adopted it. Some are Jewish, some are Christian, some are Muslim and God knows about the rest. In the meantime they became Druze, which is a purely religious matter. But genetics don't lie.

She says these are people who have lived here for thousands and thousands of years. So their religion was not Druze, but what does it matter? They became Druze later.

I am sure that there is something in common genetically between us and some of the Jews, Muslims and Christians who lived here at the time.

And to the attention of the racists who hate everyone who does not belong to their group, we were here before!

This does not mean that we want our own country, or to destroy this country otherwise.

Just understand that if you have a right to this land because you arrived here 5000 years ago, then our right is even more justified, because we have been here for tens of thousands of years!

And to the state - or more precisely, to the racists responsible, stop usurping our lands and the lands of our ancestors.

  2. If God exists and there is a Creator of the world, then it is justified that there should be reincarnation, I have been a cancer patient since the age of 7, suffering while others are healthy and enjoying every moment……….where is God

  3. First of all, I was happy to see the name of Dr. Behar Hatohach, the research is interesting and I lack much material about him. Friends, there is a reincarnation of souls from person to person, someone dies immediately and somewhere in the world someone is born, there are many, many facts about this among the Druze, I simply think it is a matter of faith only.

  4. Girlfriend, don't go too far.
This is a scientific study that proves the preservation of genetic segments in the Ida and this may mean that the Druze are loyal to their families
The principles of religion are not presented for discussion and debate and there is no connection between the article and the wheel of souls

  5. Danish:
Many people claim that they do not believe in reincarnation because no evidence has been found for it.
They simply do not find the "evidence" presented credible.
I, on the other hand, go further and claim that it is possible - more or less - to prove (yes - prove!) that reincarnation does not exist.
You are invited to read a review I wrote about the book Many Lives Many Masters in the following link:

  6. Avi,
On the topic of reincarnation, you should read the books of the American researcher Dr. Michael Newton, one of which is "The Fate of Souls" - as far as I know, the three books have also been translated into Hebrew.

  7. A question for all researchers on the Druze issue? Why are there no negroes and blacks in the entire Druze community "and can this help in geographical research?

  8. A. Ben Ner:
Read the entire article because the answer to your claim about the age of the Druze community is found in it.

  9. Nonsense in juice. This verifies the fact that they are a clan that includes genetic relatives. that's it. Neither reincarnation nor plaster.
Besides this vain belief of reincarnation was invented before genetics was discovered. It is not certain that even according to the believers a soul must pass only to a genetic relative of the owner of the "soul". There are those in India who believe that in their previous incarnation they were cows, does that make them relatives of cows?
By the way, all humans and all animals are genetically related.... This is the essence of evolution, but since there is no soul, there is nothing that will evolve between them.

  10. In my opinion, Druze history is about
    500 (+-) 3,500 years. And not 1,000
    And not tens of thousands.
Reasoning: It is well known that the founding prophet of the Druze community and religion is the prophet Shoaib who is Jethro the father-in-law (father-in-law) of Moshe.
From this it can be concluded about the age of the witness, since then
The days of Moses, as mentioned, about 3,500 years.
One of the basic principles of the Druze community is marriage within the community only.
A Druze is only one whose parents are both Druze.
This method preserves over the years the initial genetic elements.
Of course, the separate and isolated residences of the Druze in mountainous and remote areas, as well as their cultural differentiation, also contributed to the preservation of their genetic differentiation.

  11. It is not clear what the authors meant: in "tens of thousands of years", very, very strange. The claim that they were a closed group thousands of years before the creation of the Druze religion is quite puzzling in my opinion.

  12. Today's Maariv and there is talk about the fact that we and the Druze probably have a common origin. I'm already going to look in the newspaper and maybe it will also enter nrg.

  13. In the general press it was reported that the Druze also found a priest's garden. Not a word here.
