Summary of the Stockholm Water Prize competition for youth in Israel for the year XNUMX

The Stockholm Water Prize competition for youth in Israel was held for the sixth year under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering at Tel Aviv University, with the support of the Rachel and Manuel Kalchaki Foundation and under the academic management of Prof. Gideon Dagan from the Department of Flow and Heat Transfer. The winner of the first prize last year, Ron Neumann, won in addition to this prize in a competition on behalf of MIT, and the prize in which was an asteroid named after him (see link at the end of the article).
It was announced that first place was won by Nitzan Bustan, from the "Eshel Hanasi" school, for his work "Development and refinement of a sedimentograph as a tool for characterizing soil suspensions in water transmission systems" under the guidance of Avi Schweitzer and Sebastian Shipris, "Netafim" company. Nitzan represented Israel in the international competition held in August in Sweden.

Second prize worth $500 on behalf of the Kalchaki family Amir Dekal, from the College for Technicians and Engineers "Amal" XNUMXnd, Petah Tikva. For his work "Development of an improved YTH system for the detection of estrogen hormone precursors in polluted water sources using an electrochemical system" under the guidance of Prof. Yehudit Rishpon.

The third prize designated for the best ecotop work worth $200, on behalf of the Kalchaki family, was won by Ofir Levy, from the joint high school, Yavne group, for his work: "Coral reef - Bay of Eilat" directed by Dafna Tzuk.

Also, a certificate of commendation was awarded to Orli Friedman, from the religious youth village school - Kfar Hasidim for her work "Application of a coulter as a means of increasing yield and saving water by watering jasmine plants during the summer season" under the direction of Dr. Ita Arnon.

Certificates of participation were given to all the schools and students who participated in the competition.

This year, 39 projects dealing with water sources and their conservation from 23 different schools across the country were submitted to the competition at two levels:
 Extended research works at the level of 4-5 matriculation units (dissertations/independent research).
 More limited research works at the level of 1-2 matriculation units (bio/eco/geo/euro-top).
After the inspection of the projects by Mr. Mordechai Sela, Ms. Shani Zolomons and Prof. Gideon Dagan, the top eleven projects were selected for the final stage. 8 theses, and 3 acutops.

The participants who advanced to the final stage were invited to present their projects to the members of the national committee on Monday, May 16.05.05, 5 at the Faculty of Engineering at Tel Aviv University. Each participant was asked to prepare a scientific poster succinctly describing the work they performed, to present their work for about XNUMX minutes and to answer the questions of the judging committee.

At the end of the review of the posters and the interview of the candidates, the committee met for a summary meeting and to make the decision regarding the winners of the competition.
