It was published yesterday QS index, Examines the quality of the world's leading universities according to a long list of criteria. The QS ranking was conducted for the first time in 2004, and annually ranks higher education institutions with the best performance in the world, examining over 3,000 institutions and ranking 800.

In first place - MIT with a score of 100, the second place is shared by two universities from Great Britain - Cambridge and Imperial College in London with a score of 99.4. In fourth place by a small margin (99.3) is Harvard University, followed by Oxford and University College London with 99.2 points. They are followed by Stanford, Caltech, Princeton and Yale, which rounds out the top ten ahead of universities such as Chicago and ETH. Universities dealing with exact sciences, engineering and mathematics stand out in the list.

The Israeli universities Ranked in the overall ranking below the XNUMX best universities:

  • Hebrew University 138th place
  • The Technion 190
  • Tel Aviv University 195
  • Ben Gurion 292
  • Bar Ilan 650-700

For some reason, the Weizmann Institute, which came third in the Shanghai index even after its ranking deteriorated, is outside the list of the QS index. Up to this time, the institute's response has not yet been received.

As for the Hebrew University, this is an increase of three places compared to last year, when the university was ranked 141st in the world.

In August, the Hebrew University was ranked in the Shanghai ranking, the academic ranking of universities in the world, in first place in Israel, third in Asia, and 70th worldwide.

The president of the Hebrew University, Prof. Menachem Ben Sasson, welcomed the data "We are happy that the Hebrew University continues to be recognized as one of the leading universities in the world. This is first and foremost a testament to the hard work and commitment to excellence of our faculty members. This further establishes our international reputation as a high quality academic institution."

For Ben-Gurion University, it is the fourth place in the ranking of Israeli universities, rising from the 331st to the 292nd place. This is a very significant leap, 39 places. Ben-Gurion University of the Negev came in fourth place among the universities in Israel.

Referring to the results of the ranking, the president of the university, Prof. Rivka Karmi, said, "With all the criticism regarding the issue of rankings, this is an international evaluation bar that the higher education system and the public pay close attention to every year. We are happy that the sense of advancement and development we have at home, we also receive objective international reinforcement. Despite our much younger age than the leading universities in Israel and the world, we have a significant and respected presence in the international academic arena and this trend will increase in the future."

The president of the Technion in response to the QS ranking, which was published this morning: "Our position in the opening Mayaya, and in the list of the top fifty institutions according to the Shanghai index, is the result of a continuous effort"

The Technion is one of the hundred leading academic institutions in the world in the engineering-technological field. This is what the updated QS index states.

The Technion is now ranked 98th in the engineering-technological field - 119 places ahead of the next Israeli university.

In the "Shanghai Index" ranking for 2014, which was published recently, the Technion was ranked among the fifty leading academic institutions in the field of engineering. In the field of computer science, the Technion was ranked 18th in the world, and in the ranking of engineering faculties - 43rd.

The president of the Technion, Professor Peretz Lavi, said that "our position in the leading capital of engineering-technological institutions in the world, and among the top fifty in the world according to the Shanghai index, is the result of a consistent and uncompromising effort to constantly improve the level of teaching and research. The flattering ranking published this morning will encourage us to continue striving for the realization of the Technion's vision: to be a scientific-technological research university among the top ten in the world in the development of human capital, leadership and knowledge creation, working to advance the State of Israel and humanity."

About a month ago, a similar index was published - the Shanghai index, in which two Israeli universities are among the 70 best in the world - but they are also on a downward trend. The Hebrew University was ranked 11th, a drop of 78 places compared to last year, followed by the Technion in 92th place, a drop of 101 place compared to last year. The Weizmann Institute also weakened after last year it managed to enter the first Maya (150nd place) and this year it is again in the list of universities in places XNUMX-XNUMX.

Tel Aviv University also deteriorated from group 101-150 to a group between places 151-200. The University of Haifa and Ben Gurion University moved from the group 301-400 to the group of places 401-500 and the University of Haifa completely left the ranking.

  1. So why does it appear in the table, and not the Open University and Ariel University for example? In any case, the traces of Bisham Azgad have disappeared since I asked him by email for the response yesterday afternoon.

  2. All these ratings need to be accepted with skepticism,
Although in relation to the size of the population we have successes
But in the face of Israel's needs to survive this is not enough, there is a terrible loss of human capital in the State of Israel,
Entire populations who are not aware of the importance of education, they despise and mock this concept instead of confronting it.
This is a period from childhood to adulthood, studying for self-discipline for taking responsibility for considering others, for boundaries of respect for the teaching system and teachers, as well as for friendship and love,
(Considering others and boundaries allows a person to work in a group and not fail in any organization he is in)
Respect for teachers forces the child to adapt to the environment and not to look for excuses for why he is not successful
These are to improve independently, to know how to adjust oneself to succeed in difficult situations, and not to rely on one's parents to humiliate the teacher,
Entire groups of youth hang out at young ages outside at hours when they should already be in bed
They also don't have the mental ability after lack of sleep to learn, this is an entire culture that has lost the ability
To survive through education in a very competitive and cruel world where we are a small minority with a conscience,
Sometimes we are immersed in ourselves and do not realize how dangerous out there it can also be in a closed Jewish community
    Swimming in another country though
Something that was so clear to the Jews in order to survive in the diaspora was partly lost in Israel to parts of the Israeli public and it is
that education is the greatest power that can be obtained,
The push for children to study, something that starts with the mother and the father, should be extended to the entire population,
We must not give up on this, we need to increase awareness of these things so that we can exhaust our abilities, this will open up additional paths for us, additional options,
The universities are at the end of the predatory chain. What is not built first will not help the university either.
You can't build a house on shaky foundations, success doesn't just come from a genius, it comes from a whole set of people.

  3. So what? Neither were before. Based on coming and saying that there is deterioration when the numbers indicate progress?
There is indeed a retreat in the Shanghai index, but the article is not about it.

  4. Avi,
What a demagogic and misleading title! "The universities are deteriorating" and then when you look at the details it turns out that Hebrew increased from 141 to 138, Ben Gurion increased from 331 to 292 and Weizmann disappeared probably due to a technical error.
    I marvel at you.

If anyone really went down, it was Harvard, which after years of being first went down to third place. This is perhaps the only title that should have been.
