"Humanity must change the patterns of economic growth and consume less resources, even if this involves lowering the standard of living." This is what the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Prof. Yuan Tze Li of Taiwan, said yesterday (Wednesday), in a special lecture at Bar Ilan University on the occasion of receiving an honorary doctorate from the university.

After describing a device he developed that allows observing the action of atoms and molecules created in the combustion process in internal combustion engines, Prof. Lee referred to the results of the exhaust from these engines - global warming.

According to him, the industrial revolution led to the current situation where the world is currently suffering from overdevelopment in terms of excessive consumption of natural resources. "The growth patterns in many developed countries require excessive and wasteful consumption of natural resources," said Prof. Lee. "We must wake up and get used to the fact that human society lives beyond its capabilities."

Lee offers a solution that includes several components, including increasing the efficiency of energy use and other natural resources; development of efficient alternative energy systems; reducing dependence on fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas; Examining the population growth policy; and maintaining biodiversity.

"Instead of the developing countries learning and repeating the mistakes of the developed countries, they should find sustainable ways of development." Tells me and suggests, for example, to build hydroelectric power plants down the Himalayas and find ways to transmit the electricity without spillage for a distance of thousands of kilometers, to the major settlement centers in India and China.

Prof. Lee warned of the accelerated development of India and offered to learn from the wisdom of Gandhi who said that in order to achieve a high standard of living for its population, England must turn the whole world into its colonies. "Consider in your mind how many earth globes we will have to settle if India wants to achieve the same standard of living for its huge population."
