The alarming decline in the level of education in Israel is beginning to be reflected in more long-term indicators than have been felt so far.
Yesterday it was announced that the Israeli universities (with the exception of Ben Gurion University) have deteriorated in the index of the best universities in the world, QS one of the three most important higher education indices in the world (along with the Shanghai ranking and the Times ranking).
The QS ranking is based on academic peer review (40%), academic citations by faculty members (20%), the ratio of the number of faculty members to the number of students (20%), review by recruiters (10%) and the international orientation of the academic institution (10%). ).

Nearly 77 academics and approximately 44 university employees participated in the survey in order to provide current and future students with all possible data on the academic prestige of their potential university. Among the 3,539 candidate universities, 891 were ranked - 28 more than in the previous list. The citation data was taken from the Scopus/Elsevier database which contains the data of 11.1 million articles, including 44.9 million citations that are not self-citations by the researchers who wrote the article.

The Hebrew University, the highest-ranked Israeli university on the list, dropped ten places from 138th place to 148th place, the Technion in second place dropped eight places (from 190th to 198th), the third-ranked Tel Aviv University dropped seven places (from 195th place to the 203).
The only university that shows a consistent increase over the last few years is Ben Gurion University, which jumped 33 places from 292nd place to 259th place and thereby completes a jump of 118 places since 2012.
Bar Ilan moved up from the 651-700 category to the 601-650 place group
In most of the categories, a significant part of the Israeli universities are outside the list. In the classification by reputation category according to peer review, the Hebrew University is placed in 154th place, Tel Aviv in 190th place, the Technion in 202nd place and the Weizmann Institute in 319th place. In the reputation category as employers, there are only two universities on the list - Tel Aviv (321) and the Technion (367).
Two categories that improve the situation a bit are the ratio between faculty members and students and the number of citations per researcher. In the ratio between the number of faculty members and students, the Weizmann Institute is in fourth place in the world, the Hebrew Institute is in 118th place and Ben-Gurion is in 323rd place. As mentioned, the other universities are out of the ranking.
In the index of the number of citations per faculty member, Tel Aviv leads in 20th place, the Weizmann Institute in 30th place, the Technion in 69th place, the Hebrew University in 232nd place and Bar Ilan University in 359th place. It is important to note that while the other indices talk about the present which is the product of the education system in the last decade or two, the citations index still includes scientists who grew up in times when education was better and therefore it alone cannot serve as a source of pride, without the less encouraging general context.

Australia gets first representation in 19th place, France in 23rd place and Canada in 24th place. Other countries that have representation in the 50 best universities in the world are China, Hong Kong (separately from China) and South Korea. The surge of universities in Singapore which are mainly international is the most impressive. Nanyang Technological University jumped from 39th to 14th.

This is very worrying, the three leaders in Israel who are at the cutting edge have deteriorated back close to the level from 3 years ago or worse than this level as in the case of Hebrew. Ben Gurion registered an impressive improvement but in any case is still ranked significantly lower than the top 3. Bar-Ilan and Haifa measured at the bottom far beyond the 4th in front of them.
What is worrying here is the momentum, there is a clear negative momentum for 5 of the 6 universities that are ranked and as you know momentum is very difficult to change. We urgently need to check the reason for this and especially if it is related to the immigration of academics to the USA following the economic situation in Israel and cuts in research and development budgets.
This seems to be a purely populist claim if you look at the changes from 2012, what's more, with the exception of the impressive and consistent rise of Ben-Gurion, there is no dramatic change beyond the noise level, and this index is really noisy. In short, even if there is something in the claim, this table does not really show it unequivocally to say the least.
