forest fires

Climate change has an impact on the number of forest fires in the Mediterranean basin. All the countries of the basin joined together to deal with the problem except Israel

Summer is approaching and with it the danger of fires. In the past year we witnessed the burning of forests and groves in the Golan, around Jerusalem and above all the terrible fire in Carmel.
Forest fires are not our "monopoly", wherever there is a forest there is a risk of fire, when the climate is getting warmer, when as a result of the warming large areas become drier the danger of forest fires increases. In our region - the Mediterranean basin, about ten thousand square kilometers of forests are burned every year, fires that cause losses of about a billion euros (every year).

In the last hundred years, the area's forests have faced many pressures resulting from social and economic changes: mainly deforestation for settlement and agriculture. Added to these are the climatic challenges: the forecasts show continued warming, periods of drought and persistent drying, a situation that will increase the danger of forest fires breaking out on an ever-increasing scale. Along with the danger of fires, the demand for water increases... the lack of water increases.

Forests cover about 8.5% of the area in the Mediterranean basin. Many areas are subject to development pressures for tourism, agriculture and (urban) settlement. In other words, in addition to the climate changes, the forests are also threatened by social and economic changes. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Forestry Department.
In the south of the basin (North Africa), the pressure on the forests is increasing due to overgrazing and cutting down trees for use as fuel - cooking, etc.

Due to the fact that many of the forests in the north of the basin belong to private individuals and are not properly cared for, the result is a wild growth of grasses in the understory, a situation that increases the risk of fires.

Recently (April 3-7) the second conference on forests in the Mediterranean basin was held in Avignon (France), at the conference a "partnership" was established in which scientists, farmers, landowners and politicians will take part, The Collaborative Partnership on Mediterranean Forests The purpose of the partnership is to prepare for climate change / to drying out and warming that will increase the problem of lack of water in the region and endanger the forests,
The partnership will help in increasing awareness of the importance of the Mediterranean forest and its vital function for the environment and man. The forest protects the land from drifting and protects water reservoirs from evaporation, the forest absorbs DTP from the atmosphere and maintains a rich biological diversity, as such it is important and essential to preserve it.

The partnership will try to increase the cooperation between the governments in limiting the activity of non-governmental organizations and with the intention of integrating in the activity research institutes, farmers, forest owners and other interested parties that will form a framework for conservation activities.

The partnership directs the beginning of its activities and the most attention to six countries in the south and east of the basin: Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey. Israel's lack is too obvious to be accidental.

  1. What does global warming have to do with the Carmel fire? After all, the reason was arson

  2. Which sites in the English language give a platform "for each side"? Whimsical evangelist sites? Or even more whimsical Ayn Rand sites?

  3. Aroches. The site reflects the scientific consensus, otherwise it would not be a science site. If for some reason the scientific consensus changes, the site's line will change accordingly. It doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon. Besides that, your facts are also incorrect. The last 15 years have been the hottest in the history of the human race. There is a debate as to which year was the hottest, but it doesn't matter because they are all on a higher line than the average of the last 200 years since temperatures began to be measured.
And as for the stage for each side. If it was a scientific debate, there would be no problem, because it is an ideological debate between the extreme right who deny science (the same people in the US also deny evolution) on the grounds that it is not nice to harm their standard of living, and the scientists who are supposed to defend the truth - evolution and global warming. \
I am sorry that the scientific truth interferes with your reading on the site, but unfortunately I cannot change it.

  4. "All the countries of the basin joined together to deal with the problem except Israel."

    Bring proof.

  5. Tired of this lying eco-fascist propaganda.

Give us science and data and not tales of the thousand and one nights

Every yawn is blamed on human-caused warming (which has not existed for 15 years) (which has never been demonstrated)

There are beautiful articles on the site.
But the minimum of the minimum - bring a scientific opinion from one of the scientists who expose the bluff
    You don't raise.

If I am interested in brainwashing there is the Shofar website or even the main newspapers.

You are losing loyal readers (like me) if your outdated approach to English language sites does give a platform to each side. and let the reader reach his own conclusions.

  6. To no one, the warming will affect each region in a different way. On the Middle East it affects the minority of rain clouds that 'get stuck' in Europe and do not reach us (we had a good example in the months of November and December). Compared to the dryness here, there were floods in southern Europe because the clouds stopped there.

  7. To assemble

"...when the climate is getting warmer, when following the warming large areas become dry..."
This comment appears in several of your articles, it seems to me that as a result of global warming, larger areas will become
    for wetter ones.
The surface of the water in the oceans increases + high temp will result in accelerated evaporation.
Which will introduce more moisture into the atmosphere resulting in increased global precipitation.
Is there any certainty that the Mediterranean basin will dry up as a result of warming?
Explanation Forests and excess grass definitely seem to be a catalyst for fires, but these are not related to warming.

  8. Sharon, your response reveals ignorance, you have to be blind not to see that this is the work of aliens.

  9. It might sound a bit extreme as a first reaction, but I believe that the fire in Carmel was created by the government.
Also pay attention to the coordination between the fire and the opening of the Carmel tunnels... on the very same day!
And the alibi was just ridiculous. Charcoal from a Palestinian child's hookah? come on. This still does not explain the spread of the fire in more than ten centers at the same time.
The fire was planned in advance, the interests behind it are unknown, what is certain is that the bus full of guards did not take into account.
Beyond that I want to add that I enjoy your articles, full of good intentions. 🙂
