An international team of researchers led by researchers from the University of Toronto and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have identified the earliest evidence of the use of fire by ancient human species. Microscopic traces of burnt wood ash, along with animal bones and stone tools were found in a layer dated about one million years old in the Vanderwerk Cave in South Africa.

"The analysis pushes the timing of the use of fire back by about 300 thousand years, and suggests that the ancestors of humans, when they belonged to the Homo erectus species, began to use fire as part of their way of life," says University of Toronto anthropologist Michael Hazan, co-director of the project and director of the Archeology Center of the University of Toronto. The study was published April 2 in the journal PNAS.

Wonderwork is a large cave located near the border of the Kalahari Desert that was previously excavated by Peter Baumont of the Macquarie Museum in Kimberley, South Africa, who found traces of human presence there.

The research team, led by Hazan and Dr. Liora Kolska Horowitz from the Hebrew University, performed a detailed analysis of the materials from the Beaumont excavation along with new fieldwork at the Wonderwick site.

Analysis of the sediment by Francesca Barna and Paul Goldberg of Boston University revealed burnt plant remains and bone fragments, both of which appear to have been burned locally and not carried into the cave by wind or water. The researchers also found extensive evidence of surface discoloration typical of combustion.

"The control over everything was a turning point in human evolution" says Hazan. "The effect of cooking food is well documented, but the effect of controlling fire touched all elements of human society."

Ari Matmaron and Hagi Ron from the Hebrew University also participated in the study.

  1. Why are you afraid of the scriptures, in my opinion if you want to succeed in your actions, continue all your way with faith
Prayers are not important, commandments are not important, faith in a power above you is important, able?

  2. Why, but why, in every discussion of a scientific novelty or scientific discovery, the issue of religious belief pops up? Whose ass is it? Leave Aduinoy aside, who mumbles his prayers himself, and let us teach and expand our minds.

  3. And do not walk in the laws of the Gentiles, which I am sending before you: for they have done all these things, and I will punish them.
; And the land, from which I bring you, will not envy you, to dwell in it.
    To all skeptics.
Everything we Jews do today in Israel. This is what the Gentiles did who accepted the Torah in the past, and today God has given it to them
What they worship above all, beauty and earth, but took away from them the divine spark. which is compassion and mercy
who don't have it, many think they don't have a soul, but they do, just missing it, they are currently watching
He got tired of them destroying their world and chose us to lead the spark, only that the way we look right now we have no chance
To show the world that we succeeded in spite of everything, and apparently the country will throw us up,
The caves that were found are unequivocal proof that there were worlds and they were destroyed, and there are other proofs,
"Send from you" that we will not learn from them

  4. Miki, according to the accepted aphorism in the religious circle, God creates and destroys worlds.... But don't look for tassels to justify your disbelief...

  5. How can it be? After all, according to the Torah of Israel, the world has only existed for about 6000 years!
And how do they even know how long ago? were they then

  6. According to my memory, the use of fire was attributed to Java man 800 thousand years ago (Java is near China, Java man is one of the homo erectus species). If I'm not mistaken, the man from Iowa was also claimed to find soot marks in the places where he lived (that is, there will be soot marks that cannot result from a natural fire).

If the new soot findings are correct, then fire was already in use by the Arcatus 200 thousand years before the Javanese man.

  7. In a million years they will find evidence of the use of the Internet by humans, here I put my signature
