Prof. Ehud Netzer, head of the Herodion excavation expedition since the 76s and researcher of King Herod and his time, died last night (Thursday) of his wounds at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. He was XNUMX years old at the time of his death. Netzer was injured after falling on Tuesday this week during an excavation at the Herodion site south of Jerusalem and suffered fractures to his skull and neck vertebrae.

Netzer is considered an expert in everything related to Herodes and the archaeologist most associated with the Herodian site, where he excavated for 35 years. Three years ago he found the tomb of King Herod, in what is considered one of the most important achievements of Israeli archaeology.

In the sixties of the 20th century, Netzer participated as an architect in the excavations at Masada, and in the restoration works and the construction of the visitors' site at the site. Following the Six Day War, he participated in the restoration of ancient neighborhoods in Jerusalem.

Upon learning of Prof. Netzer's passing, last night the Prime Minister Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu published a statement of condolence on the death of Professor Netzer and called his widow Deborah. Netanyahu stated that he met Prof. Netzer, at the Herodion, thanks to his young son, Avner, the two were very impressed by the tour of the Herodion, under the guidance of Professor Netzer, and said that "his tragic death, he is lost to his family, to the researchers of Israel's heritage and to the science of archaeology."
