Professor Yoram Shiptan from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion is one of the winners of grants under the BIRMAX program, for joint research in the fields of energy and environmental research. Grant amount: about £30,000.

The research proposal of Professor Yoram Shiptan from the Technion and Dr. Moshe Givoni from Oxford refers to mathematical and statistical models. These models are essential for understanding processes in the fields of energy and the environment, and therefore also for formulating policies in these fields. "The current study aims to examine the contribution of quantitative analysis to formulating plans designed to solve energy and environmental problems, focusing on the field of transportation, and to explore ways to increase the contribution of this analysis," explains Professor Shiptan. "Transportation is an essential element in every society and every economy, but it relies on coal fuel ('standard' fuel), and therefore its environmental effects are serious. We are developing a set of sophisticated models that take into account the multitude of aspects and make it possible to preserve the advantages of the transportation system at a lower environmental cost, while reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources."
The BIRAX program was established by the British Council, in collaboration with the Pierce Foundation and leading scientists from the UK and Israel, with the aim of strengthening academic cooperation between the two countries.
The announcement of the names of the winners was made by Mr. William Hague, the British Foreign Secretary. The ten winning projects deal with a wide range of issues in the field of the environment, including the conservation of the coral reef in the Red Sea.
