Ten new planets were revealed at the CoRoT conference

CoRoT-20b – a planet that moves around its sun in a 9-day cycle and in an eccentric orbit, whose shape may be related to the great density of the star that is twice that of Mars

At the second scientific conference of the CoRoT spacecraft taking place these days in Marseille, the spacecraft team, which included Professor Zvi Maza from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University, announced the discovery of 10 new planets around distant suns.

Among the discoveries of the spacecraft:

  • CoRoT-20b – a planet that moves around its sun in a cycle of 9 days and in an eccentric orbit, unlike the planets in the solar system that all have circular orbits. It is possible that the eccentric orbit is related to the great density of the star, twice that of Mars.
  • CoRoT-24b,c – two relatively small planets, the size of the planet Rehab (Neptune), moving around the same sun in cycles of 5 days and 12 days.

The CoRoT spacecraft will shoot for stars - distant suns, which have planets - planets, which pass by them in a cyclical manner. In such a case part of the face of such a sun is hidden by the planet for a short time. Such an event, which repeats itself throughout the planet's orbit, allows researchers to measure the planet's radius, and with the help of observations from Earth it is also possible to estimate its mass. The CoRoT spacecraft led by a French team was the first spacecraft launched into space to search for planets and has been operating for about five years.
In each of the cases, observations from the ground are required that complement the spacecraft data and make it possible to determine with certainty the size and mass of the planets. The CoRoT team uses various telescopes in the world, including the ones in the Canary Islands, and the giant telescopes in Chile and Hawaii, including the telescope at the Tel Aviv University Observatory in the Negev.
Although Israel is not a partner in financing the construction of the satellite and its launch, Professor Zvi Maza from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University was accepted as a full partner in the spacecraft team in light of his contribution to the analysis of the observations. Together with him, the students Aviv Ofir and Lev Tal-Or from Tel Aviv University are partners in some of the discoveries.
Despite the enormous distance to the planets that were discovered, it is possible to estimate from the observations their size and the amount of mass, and from this to get their average densities. The discovered planets are different in nature from each other. "Each star that is discovered is a new world that appears behind the horizon line and contains a piece of information in solving the puzzle of the creation and development of the planets" says Professor Zvi Maza.

  1. There is no life outside the earth according to Judaism Rabbis and elders of Israel explicitly say that there are no geographical worlds like the earth in which humans, animals and plants live. Scientists estimate that the universe is only 80,000,000,000 light years in size. This means that the universe is limited. It has a limit. The universe is not infinite, only God is infinite.

And to Tommy I thought that a thousand tents and a house is a house... and therefore a house is better than a tent.
And as for A, she chose of her own free will to be B's president?

  3. I see no one is answering.
The answer is that he realized before everyone else that one should not start with A.

  4. Lezvi, the name of the first planet to be discovered is b. The term A (albeit with a capital letter) is used to describe the partner in a double star system. Decided to start from b so as not to confuse A with a

And besides, b is the first letter in the word B

  5. Completing my father's words,
A certain target is called CoRoT N where N is some specific number indicating the catalog number of the observed target.
The first planet you find there will be called CoRoT N b
The star that the planet orbits will be called CoRoT N a.
If more phantasms are discovered in the same system, they will be called c, d and so on.

  6. Regarding A. I can answer - the small letters from b onwards are the names of planets in order of discovery (not necessarily the order of their proximity to the sun). If their house stars had familiar names they would be called by the name of the star plus the b. Apparently these are stars whose names contain many numbers (as Prof. Mario Livio usually jokes in his lectures about a certain star that he shows on a slide and says that this is his phone number, not on Shabbat), there is no point in doing so, so it is better to read after the name of the spacecraft that discovers it. This is also true for Kepler.

  7. Two questions for Professor Zvi Maza
    A. What do the letters c and b mean in the names of the planets and what are the names of the "house stars" of the aforementioned planets?
    B. In the article it was stated that the discovery of the planet was made by measuring the cyclical change in the intensity of the star's light when the planet
"hides" him from the CoRoT. How can the eccentricity of the route be estimated from this data?
    with gratitude.

  8. I do not understand. Isn't this the role of the Kepler space telescope, which as far as I know has already found over 340 planets?
