A new study found that the vaccines given today are very safe with very low side effects. Also, the existing system for monitoring and identifying rare side effects that were not identified prior to approval to vaccinate, is efficient and high quality.
Vaccines prevent millions of cases of morbidity, disability and death worldwide every year. In order to make it possible to vaccinate babies and young children, the vaccines must be very safe to use, and this is in order to prevent, God forbid, health damage to a healthy baby and so that the parents know that they are not endangering their children by giving the vaccine. For this purpose, the modern vaccine development process is long and rigorous, and on average about ten years pass from the beginning of the development of a new vaccine to the approval for use by the health authorities. However, rare side effects or those that appear years after the administration of the vaccine may not be discovered before the approval for the use of a new vaccine.
For this purpose, a special system was established in the USA to identify side effects of vaccines. This system (VAERS - Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) receives about 30,000 inquiries each year from medical staff and the general public and tries to identify and locate those that reflect new or dangerous side effects of the existing vaccines. Any detection of a new side effect or indication of a higher than expected incidence of a known side effect leads to an immediate examination of the safety of the continued use of the vaccine. If necessary, an orderly warning is distributed to doctors around the world in order to consider the decision regarding the benefit of vaccination for each and every child based on their medical condition.
In the current study, the researchers analyzed all the changes made by the US health authorities (FDA- Food and Drug Administration) in the safety profile of all vaccines approved over a period of 20 years (1996-2015). During this period, hundreds of millions of vaccine doses were given in the US, so even rare side effects could be identified and characterized. The types of new side effects of the vaccines and the source of the information that led to their discovery were also characterized.
The study included 57 vaccines approved during the period in question. The vast majority of them were confirmed by randomized controlled trials that included many thousands of patients and compared the new vaccine to a vaccine that had already been approved in the past.
58 changes in the safety profile of 25 of the vaccines were identified. The vast majority of the new side effects were mild and without significant health consequences, such as warnings of mild allergies to various components of the vaccines or momentary loss of consciousness immediately after the vaccination in a very small proportion of the vaccinated.
Additional warnings dealt with situations in which it is better to avoid vaccination, such as in immunocompromised patients due to another medical condition, patients with various underlying diseases, premature infants and pregnant women. One vaccine (for the rotavirus) was banned for use in the late 90s after a slight increase (of about 0.05%) in cases of intussusception after use was discovered. Most of the side effects were quickly identified by the VAERS system, including the rota vaccine, the use of which was stopped less than a year after the initial approval.
This study, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind to date, shows that the system that approves and supervises the use of vaccines presents a high safety profile, even when examining data from many different types of vaccines over many years. This is an important finding especially in light of the decrease in childhood vaccination that we have witnessed in certain groups around the world in recent years, and the increase in morbidity in these groups. Part of the decrease in the use of vaccines is due to parents' understandable concern in light of unsubstantiated information from various sources, and any information that shows that vaccines are safe to use can help parents make a more informed decision about vaccinating their children.
According to Dr. Daniel Shepashlovitz, the lead researcher of the study from Ichilov and Tel Aviv University: "Vaccines are one of the great achievements of modern medicine, and any information that reinforces the safety of their use and can help convince parents of children not to avoid vaccines contributes both to the health of those children and for the health of the general public".
The group of researchers included: Dr. Noam Tau from Sheba Medical Center, Dr. Dafna Yahav from Beilinson Hospital and the leader of the study, Dr. Daniel Shepashlovitz from Ichilov Tel Aviv Medical Center and Tel Aviv University.
The study was published in the prestigious scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
