Researchers from Bar-Ilan have developed a technology that turns water into a powerful disinfectant effective against Corona

A green and friendly alternative to alcohol gel and chemical disinfectants: researchers from Bar-Ilan University have developed a technology that turns water into a powerful disinfectant using electrodes. It will allow to disinfect wide surfaces in hospitals, supermarkets and kindergartens on a daily basis without danger

An innovative technology developed in the laboratory of Prof. Doron Orbach at Bar-Ilan University allows the production of disinfectant from simple tap water, and the elimination of bacteria and viruses without the environmental damage of existing disinfectants. Dr. Eran Avraham and Dr. Yitzhak Cohen from the laboratory of Prof. Doron Orbach in the Department of Chemistry and the Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, succeeded in adapting water technology that they developed to be a means of fighting viruses, through comprehensive tests conducted by Dr. Ina Kelt and Dr. Tatiana Steinberg -Borodiansky from the laboratory of Prof. Ronit Sharid from the Faculty of Life Sciences at Bar-Ilan University. There it was scientifically proven that the unique development also kills Russian Corona.

This is water that undergoes a measured electrochemical process, and simple technology can make it usable as excellent disinfectants, in recycled or reusable containers. These are materials that are safe to use and are therefore suitable for both hospitals and kindergartens. Additional uses: clothes, air conditioners, handles, curtains, surfaces, beds and surfaces of any kind. Further development may also adapt them to human disinfection. When we have finished using our mask and gloves, the mask can be reused and also the hands can be sprayed without drying out (of course avoiding spraying the eyes, nose and mouth).

The disinfectants are 100 times more effective than bleach, so a low concentration of between 50 and 200 mgl of the ingredients is sufficient to achieve neutralization activity (unlike bleach, which in comparison needs between 5,000 and 20,000 mgl). This means that they are much more environmentally friendly. They do not cause skin burns and do not dry out the skin. The possibility that these antiseptics are very effective for treating wounds is being tested. They do not cause corrosion, and most importantly: at a concentration of 50 mg of them, which is a very low amount of active substance, they neutralize and destroy corona.

In containers without electrodes, the activity of these disinfectants will be valid for two months and they can be sold in recyclable bottles. Electrodes can be added to products in reusable bottles that will make them, by a fairly simple electrical process, usable for a long time.

Prof. Ronit Sharid, a virus researcher whose laboratory conducts research on various viruses: "We tested the ability of the substances to damage the infectivity of the herpes simplex virus type 1 and of the human corona virus OC43, which is known to cause a relatively mild respiratory disease in humans. Both viruses were completely neutralized when they were exposed to Prof. Auerbach's disinfectants for different periods of time and in different concentrations. The structural characteristics of OC43 are similar to those of SARS-CoV-2, which recently broke out, and therefore it can be concluded that this virus will also be easily neutralized using these disinfectants."

About 60 research teams from Bar-Ilan University are working around the clock on studies to deal with the corona virus. The extensive research activity is led by the president of the university, Prof. Aryeh Tsavan, and the vice president for research, Prof. Shola Michaeli, who recognized the value of interdisciplinary research that would provide an answer to all the complex aspects of dealing with the virus, from the scientific-medical aspect to the social-psychological aspect.

  1. Tam's question: if electrodes can change the water so strongly that viruses are killed, how are we so sure that they may not change something in our body cells. Even this poisonous water that kills viruses, how can we be sure that it does not harm our body.

  2. Probably really the material is known and used. The development is an optimization of its production.
From an article published about a year ago - "We reduced existing systems and made them accessible and free of maintenance problems"

  3. First of all, distilled water is known as a powerful cleaning agent because of the lack of ions in it: this causes a particularly effective extraction of hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances and the "elimination" of colonies of bacteria, viruses and many types of mold - without the need to add cleaning agents and detergents of all kinds; At Intel, for example, all reusable coveralls (used by all employees in the cleanrooms) are cleaned in washing machines that operate only with distilled water (TDW), without the addition of washing powders, fabric softeners, etc.
Regarding the oxidation of "tap water" through the application of high voltages - this is a process that has been known for more than two centuries, when molecular oxygen is formed in water that partially dissolves in the water (the concentration of molecular oxygen can reach about ten micromolar, that is, around ten to the minus 5 molar power). It is also possible to saturate the water with ozone, which is a stronger oxidizer than "normal" molecular oxygen.
And finally, here are two prof-friendly suggestions. Orbach:
    1. Please stop making fun of yourself and continue to engage only in what you specialize in - producing batteries and accumulators that are efficient and safe to use - and leave the other areas of chemistry and electrochemistry to other chemists.
    2. Every scientist must characterize, explain and analyze his results in a complete and convincing manner; Therefore, when you oxidize "tap water" - you must know what substances are present in it and what their concentrations are - and of course make sure that it is about the results of the apartments. I find it hard to believe that both the types of substances and their concentrations in tap water are constant all the time. Of course, the characterization of the disinfectant created in the water is as important as anything else - and that, my dear colleague, you didn't show - what's more, as I wrote above - water oxidation by applying voltages was already done in the nineteenth century!

  4. What is the wonderful substance of the genius scientists? A whole article talks all around and hides what is interesting. Maybe they hide it because it's not that wonderful? I thought the science website had scientific articles and not marketing articles that hide the science.
My guess is that the wonder substance is simply hydrogen peroxide. If you check in the literature, it is found regarding the new virus that hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 0.5% destroys it in seconds.
Both electrolysis and UV light can produce hydrogen peroxide in low concentration percentages. The use of hydrogen peroxide for disinfection has probably been known since the 19th century.

  5. Hahahahaha this has been known for years, and you can do it at home.
Connect a plastic bottle to both ends of the extension capacitor without grounding, and add 10% salt. Plug in for a minute, and that's it. You have water + 10.3% bleach.

  6. 'Stressant' has been producing a disinfectant liquid from water and salt for over 5 years that is sold all over the country. Received all the necessary approvals for marketing the product in Israel and around the world. In Bar-Ilan they did not invent anything. Go to EBAY. Buy such "patents" for pennies.

  7. In all dams and waterfalls electricity is produced from water (through turbines).

  8. The active substance is actually anionic oxygen that is isolated from the water, and therefore evaporates quickly, but another solution - simply ultraviolet lamps at several frequencies also the filters of the air conditioning, excellent disinfection, and of course a generator of electrons and positive ions to purify the air.
And still, even after the epidemic, it is of great importance for the hands of all the staff, and the visitors to the hospital.
Disposable gloves, not changed often enough.
