A technology for building solar cells to produce electricity based on photosynthetic proteins in nanometer size, which is currently in the process of commercialization by the Ramot company near Tel Aviv University Ltd., was chosen to be presented at the President's Conference and at the "Merhavi Machar" exhibition on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel.

The technology, which combines the use of genetic engineering and nanotechnology, which was developed by Prof. Hanoch Carmeli, Dr. Shahar Richter, Prof. Yossi Rosenox and Dr. Itai Carmeli from Tel Aviv University, mobilizes the natural process of photosynthesis to build solar cells to convert light into electrical energy. The solar cells that will be developed on the basis of the proteins that convert energy with high efficiency, will provide an environmentally friendly alternative to the polluting and degradable fuel sources, at a price dozens of times lower than the price of the current silicon-based solar cells.

"The global market for solar cells is estimated at $10.6 billion and is growing at a rate of 35% per year," says Dr. Zeev Winfeld, Senior Vice President for Business Development at Ramot. "The technology protected by several patents is indeed groundbreaking and breaks conventions. We are now in the midst of a commercialization process that will move the revolutionary invention to the stage of industrial application. There is no doubt that the selection of the project for presentation at the President's Conference will win it wide international exposure and will help its success in the future."

The exhibition and conference are planned for May 13-15 and over 2,000 guests from Israel and the world have been invited to them, including US President George Bush, former USSR President Michael Gorbachev, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, son-in-law Nobel Peace Prize for Elie Wiesel, Sergey Brin, one of the founders of GOOGLE, Rupert Murdoch and Terry Semal, founder of YAHOO.
