"The fate of human culture hangs in the balance, sustainability is not just a matter of choice, it is a necessity"

This is what Joe Confino, editor of the Guardian Sustainable Business, said at the Pratt Environmental Communication Awards ceremony held on Thursday in Tel Aviv

On Thursday, the Heschel Center and the Pratt Foundation in Tel Aviv held the 12th annual Pratt Award ceremony in the field of environmental communication.
Many difficult things were said at the conference. One of the most prominent in the Prophet of Rage was Goj Confino, editor of the Guardian Sustainable Business, in an on-stage interview with Neta Ahitov, reporter for the Haaretz supplement and one of the winners of the Pratt Prize (See separate report).

"It is important to understand that we are in a crisis, and that unlike in Hollywood movies there will always be little heroes who will save us, in reality this is not what will happen. History is not linear, we had periods when cultures rose, grew and fell, countries that rose grew and fell. Civilizations came and went and some stones remained in Jerusalem and Turkey as a souvenir of that era. There is a very great fear that our age is about to come to an end, the question is only if we will understand it when it is too late, or if we will understand it, while something can be done and we will use the human attitude, the compassion and the talents of the people to change it. We are facing an important choice, both as individuals and as a society, and it will not take many more years until the results of this choice are felt."

The main point that Confino wanted to convey is that "sustainability" is no longer a marginal topic on which an article is published sporadically when appropriate, but rather it is the thread that connects everything, the core organizing principle that holds the various threads together. Confino also referred to the Guardian's decision to address a business audience, in light of the understanding that businesses have the key and the ability to promote change in a rapid and strategic manner. They have the resources, they have the money, they have the ability to act. They understand that they are not alone, but as part of a coalition, of mutual dependence. Businesses are not a separate entity from society and they understand that they will not be able to make the change alone, but non-governmental organizations active in the field of the environment will not be able to make the change alone either. Nor can the governments make the change alone. A cross-functional coalition should be established. The media should be part of this but also maintain distance and independence. At one time the association was controlled by political parties and we felt relieved when it passed into commercial hands, but today there is a danger of business interests taking over. The Guardian has business sponsors, but there is separation and independence. If the media loses it, the whole thing is over."

Earlier, Confino led a workshop with the participation of twenty journalists and environmentalists, on the current state of the environmental media today and what the next step is.

  1. The Muslims will cause the destruction of the modern world long before the environmental problems.
Look at how many demographic, economic, social and security problems they cause around the world.

  2. Existence is a word used by those who are bored and don't care about other human beings and who only care that they end up "okay" by thinking of something useful (although from a practical point of view they are usually not useful in anything on the subject, but just thinking is enough).

  3. Upon further examination, it seems to me that the word "existence" should be sufficient in some cases in the article. Not "existential" and certainly not "existing".
The opening sentence will look like this: "The fate of human civilization hangs in the balance, existence is not just a matter of choice, it is a necessity."
The word "existential" means: the way we exist. Or, if you like: the theory of existence. Therefore, it should only be used in the appropriate context.

  4. Sorry for responding off-topic.
It seems to me that one should say in Hebrew: "existence" and not "existence".
I was looking for a similar word. For example "conclusion" - "finality" seems more correct than "conclusion".
Another word: "combination-combination" and not "phases".
    Or "connection-connectivity" and not "friendship".

And yet, to the point: it seems to me that the Western democracies have degenerated and are no longer democracies. Capital has taken over the government, and decisions are made mainly in favor of cartels because of the lobbyists who have taken over the legislatures all over the world. The political parties take care of themselves and the people of Shloman first, then the people of capital. The public is at the very bottom of the list. A new revolution is required. The public will come to the realization that the Knesset is as dictatorial as any other dictator, and the right to a referendum on various matters is a basic right of every people. I wrote about it on my website: http://www.mahshavot.co.il

  5. If that's the case, sustainability means starting to use your mind and think about how it is possible to spend more than necessary and still not harm the environment.

  6. Sustainability means consuming only as much as necessary and not wasting, recycling where possible, traveling by public transport, washing towels and sheets once every few days. Everyone should contribute where they can. It has nothing to do with Scientology and the fact that he doesn't say enough - very simply, the recording of the first part of his words was difficult for me.

  7. Sounds like Scientology.
What is sustainability anyway? He who lives exists, he who does not live does not exist. What is sustainability?
What crisis is this Abu Dhabi talking about?
    what does he want?
And why does it seem like he's mumbling a lot of words without saying too much? and what does that mean.

  8. The fate of humanity is truly at stake. The gravity of the problems is greater than ever:
Warming, depletion of energy resources, the decline of the USA and changes of shifts, the demographic situation in Israel, the loss of hope for the middle class, an achievement of the 18th century, the inability on the one hand to convince the Arabs to live with the West and on the other hand the need to live together: these are people like us, Their right to live. The loss of leadership at all levels.
