The level of carbon dioxide is approaching 400 parts per million - a disturbing landmark

This is reported by the journal Nature. The researchers who monitor the gases will treat this as a disturbing sign of humanity's power to change the chemical composition of the atmosphere and by extension also the Earth's climate.

In the coming weeks, a device that analyzes data at Ifnera Adom near the summit of Mount Mauna Loa in Hawaii may make history in the series of daily measurements of the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - the measurements may exceed the alarming rate of 400 parts per million of carbon dioxide, a value that has not been seen on Earth in millions of years .
The researchers who monitor the gases will treat this as a disturbing sign of humanity's power to change the chemical composition of the atmosphere and by extension also the Earth's climate. This is what the journal Nature reports yesterday.

"At 400 parts per million, nations and countries will experience difficulties in keeping warming under control," says Corinne Le Quéré, a climate researcher at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, who says the effect will be a rise of 2 degrees Celsius, which experts have urged governments not to reach. .”

Although it will take a few years for the carbon dioxide level to reach 400 parts per million throughout the year, the measurement of the value at the summit of Mauna Loa is significant because researchers have been monitoring the gas there since 1958, more than anywhere else on earth.

When the measurements began, levels of 316 parts per million were recorded - not that much above the figure of 280 million that prevailed before the industrial revolution, but since the measurements began in Hawaii, the value followed the rising graph and shows no signs of stabilization. Emissions of other greenhouse gases are also increasing, resulting in an equivalent of 478 parts per million of carbon dioxide.
The data processed by Le Kerr and other members of the Global Carbon Project show that humans contributed about 10.4 billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere in 2011, half of the amount is absorbed by marine and terrestrial vegetation and the other half remains in the atmosphere and increases the concentration of carbon dioxide.

  1. Uri - When it comes to millions of years, our knowledge is really not that good.
I saw that they think it was warmer on a scale of tens of thousands of years (although I don't remember where)
There is also the matter of the Middle Ages Optimum, where opinions differ on how hot it was back then.
It is known that Greenland may not have been very green but it was much more habitable in certain parts of history. In general, any study that checks temperature so long ago should be taken with a limited guarantee.

The problem is quite simple. A relatively small warming will greatly change the climate and raise the sea level. What happened in the past is not interesting because we live in a different world.

  3. It should be remembered that the very existence and human activity of billions
Humanity creates heat that takes time to escape from the atmosphere
In one way or another (even if in some cases the energy
is created in a way that does not create carbon dioxide and soot, such as nuclear energy).

Therefore, global warming is likely to be rapid
More than can be deduced only from the measurement of the FDF values.

  4. My father points out in the article that this is "a value that has not been seen on Earth for millions of years".
Was there a similar situation in the past?
    How did it affect life?
And what was the reason for that?
And what is the reason that the value in the past decreased?

    Thanks

  5. The end of the world will occur in 2015 according to the last graph (as far as I could estimate the resolution). The Mayans were right then, they were only wrong by 3 years. To the joy of the Mayans, worthy heirs arose for them, the worthy heirs continue the tradition of the Mayans for predicting the end of the world in our very days.

  6. To take the human race off the stage. This is the only way to destroy religion.

  7. Let nature do its thing
Don't worry as soon as the standing up becomes unbearable he knew how to take care of the bipedal creature
In the end, nature will reach a balance even if it means taking the human race off the stage
