Application, the Development and Research Company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Z-Cube, a subsidiary of the Italian pharmaceutical company Zambon, announced today that they signed a licensing agreement according to which Z-Cube will develop and commercialize an innovative nanotechnology system for administering drugs for the treatment of pain. The technology was invented by Professor Alka Tuito from the School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University.

According to the terms of the agreement, Z-Cube received exclusive rights to develop and commercialize the technology for the treatment of pain, and will finance the continuation of the research, which will be conducted by Professor Toito and her group. Z-Cube is also entitled to grant sub-licenses for the continued development of the product. Application will receive in return licensing fees, payments on milestones and royalties.

The innovative system is designed to administer drugs capable of relieving both moderate and severe pain quickly and efficiently. The main advantage of the technology is that the drug can quickly reach the brain and nervous system, thus causing an immediate effect of pain relief. In experiments on model animals in the laboratory, the preparation was found to be safe and to have an effective and fast activity.

"We are happy to team up with Z-Cube, a leading company in the development of drug delivery technologies, supported by an international pharmaceutical company," said Yaakov Michlin, CEO of Apission. "The new preparation consists of ingredients that have all been approved by the FDA, and we believe it has the potential to reach the market within 3-5 years."

Professor Toito, a world authority in the field of drug introduction, focuses on designing new drug systems that will allow increased absorption of drugs and more effective activity of the drug. Her research has already led to the establishment of two start-up companies active in the development of pharmaceutical products based on innovative technologies she developed in the past.

"This original drug delivery system is a powerful tool that enables the development of improved pain medications," said Dr. Lorenzo Pardella, Z-Cube's Director of Business Development. "The new approach will benefit patients suffering from pain and will lead to the production of upgraded and user-friendly drugs."

In 2007, the global market for pain relief products (excluding over-the-counter drugs) was approximately $4.2 billion and represents one of the largest pharmaceutical segments. The demand for prescription painkillers is expected to grow due to the increase in the world's population, the increase in chronic pain diseases, and increasing awareness of doctors for the importance of pain management. Improved pain management includes not only the development and marketing of new chemical substances, such as pain relievers, but also the development of new systems for the introduction of drugs that reduce side effects, increase safety and improve the level of response to treatment.

  1. Concerned citizen:
The subject of intellectual property encourages development and progress in a very effective way.
Without him, many ideas would have gone to the grave with their inventors because they would not have found it appropriate to share them with the public.
The most common form of intellectual property is the patent.
The patent is a kind of contract between the individual and the company in which the individual is obliged to tell the company all the details of his invention and the company, for its part, promises the individual that he will be able to gain exclusivity in realizing the idea for a certain period of time.
In many cases the only alternative is to keep the idea as a trade secret and achieve exclusivity by hiding it from others. Only the company loses in these cases.
In other cases, the owner of the idea is not in an environment that allows him to realize the idea and the only way to realize the idea is cooperation between the inventor and a company whose activity the idea is in. Registering a patent allows the inventor to protect his rights when he comes to reveal them to a potential partner. In the absence of this tool - most of the ideas invented by people who are not large companies dealing in the field to which the idea refers - would simply descend into the abyss of femininity without anyone even knowing that they were invented.
Say from now on: "The protection of intellectual property - not only does it not limit development - it is one of its most important accelerators"

  2. It's just a trade name like "HD" is a code name for high resolution
Just working on all of us with the intellectual property they dig for themselves.... What a nice system we built for ourselves that knocks us out.... Just one step better than burning anyone who threatens your status at the stake or hanging them.
