Exploding! World Population Day

Wild animals adapt to proximity to the human population, which causes frequent contact and increased outbreaks of diseases originating from animals (zoonotic diseases), a phenomenon that is a clear result of the situation in which the climatic changes are combined with the explosion of the human population

In 1989 it was announced at the UN "World Population Day” which is celebrated every year on 11/07, a date chosen because on 11/07/1987 it was determined that the world's population reached five billion people. Every year a topic is chosen to be dealt with in the context of population growth. In 2020, the chosen topic was supposed to deal with health and gender equality with the understanding that "the implementation of social and gender equality is a key to sustainable development".

The increase in the human population has reached enormous proportions. After moderate growth for 10,000 years, the 18th century reached when the population grew to one billion, a number that caused the "burst of the dam" and thus in the next 200 years the population explosion reached close to eight billion and with it a deadly combination of damage to the environment and climate, Today it is clear that she is the one who causes natural disasters.

The increase is also linked to significant changes in the place where people live. For most of history most people lived in rural areas but in 2007 the balance changed and since then the urban majority has grown and increased.

When there is an epidemic in the world and in many countries there is a lockdown, many have lost their source of livelihood, students are not studying and industries are dormant, the question arises how important is "Population Day" and how significant or important is its significance to the current situation?

In the last 200 years, technological development and industrialization in all areas caused a population explosion and severe damage to the natural environment. The world suffers from natural and climate disasters because of the deadly combination of population growth that causes the invasion of wildlife habitats along with climate change. Again: disasters that originate from the changing climate and to a large extent also from the invasion of wild animal habitats.

The environmental disasters, which are also described as the sixth extinction, are a direct result of human activity. The emission of greenhouse gases on an unprecedented scale has caused warming, melting glaciers, extreme weather phenomena and more. The combination of the population explosion and climatic disasters caused the displacement of millions of people and mass migration, so for example it is estimated that By 2050, one seventh of the people of Bangladesh will become displaced and be forced to migrate. Where will they migrate?

"The current epidemic emphasized the vulnerability of the populations and at the same time illuminated the lack of taste in arrogance and the illusion of superiority and control over the world and nature." A considerable part of the sensitivity is a result of urbanization, the transfer of the centers of life from the village close to nature to the alienated and reserved city. The city whose population has grown due to "climate migrants" spreads and invades areas that used to be habitats for animals and thus the environment and nature are damaged, and the rate of extinction has increased a thousand times than it was before. The human era".

According to surveys and studies: the impact reduced the number of wild animals by 80% and the amount of plants by 50%. One of the results of the damage is that the remaining wild animals adapt to living in close proximity to people, and this has increased the cases of diseases transmitted from animals, those caused when pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and viruses are transmitted to humans.

One of the challenges in climate science is the difficulty in predicting all the results from warming and the long-term impact. It is therefore clear that in order to prevent what will happen in decades, action is needed now, "it is better to suffer an economic blow today in order to improve the survival chances of future generations".

It is to be hoped that following the current epidemic there will be an understanding that the result of an invasion of natural areas is infection with epidemics and this understanding will be useful for the mitigation of the invasion and the implementation of prevention methods. In addition to this, the understanding is increasing that the changes also hurt on a personal level.

For example, evidence is accumulating of damage to pregnant women who are exposed to heat and infection, to underweight newborns and abortions. We all know the terms "heatstroke", "dehydration" and the like.

As a direct result of the damage to the environment, more and more breadwinners in poor countries are leaving agricultural areas and immigrating in search of work, thus causing a greater burden on the women who stay at home, and to alienate them from sources of livelihood. Extreme weather disasters burden women with family care, which limits their ability to engage in paid work.

The things above are indeed a reason to mark "World Population Day" while directing the focus to gender equality and health, but more than that, there is a need for a focused reference to the source of the problem, there is a vital need to recognize that the source of the problem is the explosion of the human population.

The world is shutting down because of a tiny virus and we are at a loss as to how to move forward from here. The embarrassing situation offers the possibility of "rebuilding better" the economy while understanding our dependence on the natural world, a failure to treat the epidemic and climate change properly. The continuation of the arrogant behavior and delusion of superiority will make the current epidemic look like a "walk in the park" in view of what is yet to come.

And finally, as usual, the time has come that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there will be control of the human population for the sake of the environment.

  1. According to analyzes by the futurist David Pasig, the world's population will begin to shrink due to a low birth rate.
    not to worry!

You are very right. The graph is deceiving at least twice.
First - it is not linear. The vertical difference between 8 and 9 is much greater than the difference between 4 and 5.
Second - the use of the sphere implies that the ratio is according to volume and not according to the vertical axis.

  3. The graph shown is simply demagoguery.
The job of a graph is to visually present information so that it is easier to understand, in practice this graph is lying. And the sizes of the earth do not reflect the ratio between the size of the population at the different points in time

  4. Talking about slowing down natural reproduction at the cost of a ridiculous economic crisis, a stable and flourishing economy is what slows down natural reproduction. One should strive for maximum economic prosperity with minimum environmental damage.
    Natural reproduction is small alone.
On the contrary, the problem today is an imbalance in the natural proliferation between parts of the world, and too low a proliferation of the economically developed parts.

The ideology is to think about the lives of future generations.
Why do you think this is such a bad idea?

  6. Not at all like what the Nazis did. The idea is to take care of women's well-being, first of all for a human reason, and secondly - educated women have fewer children. Immunizations and improving sanitary conditions in Africa will mean that more children will survive and become adults. Therefore their parents will have fewer children so that there will still be someone to take care of them. No one wants to kill anyone.

  7. "And finally, as usual, the time has come that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there will be control of the human population for the sake of the environment"
The same people (and of course their descendants) who talked about social evolution, and "survival of the fittest" are today talking about "population control". When will you realize that behind the beautiful descriptions of protecting the environment and stopping global warming is the same ideology that grew Nazi Germany?

  8. In a quick calculation from the numbers given in the illustration of the article, the growth rate is only getting smaller.
In the 13 years after 1974 the population grew by 25%.
In the 12 years that followed, the population grew by 20%.
In the next 13 years, the population grew by 16%.
In the next 15 years, according to the forecast, the population will increase by 14%.
And the question in the figure is, how long will it take for the population to grow another 12.5%.
According to this, the growth rate of the world's population has halved in almost 50 years.

  9. There are many things that are true, but it is possible that an incorrect connection of them is wrong and may cause damage on an explanatory level, connecting the current epidemic to the entry of man into the natural areas is simply strange because in practice today the contact of the majority of the human population with wild animals and with nature is minimal if there is anything that distinguishes the The modern man is a sterile environment that he creates around him without animals, so the first thing he does in the new environment that he takes over is the elimination of natural nature and the creation of an environment adapted only to man, so that in such an environment the chance of disease passing from animal to man is much smaller, if there is anything in the world that transmits disease it is The rapid and continuous movement of people inside and outside the country,
It is true that the overcrowding of farm animals can be described as a dangerous situation, but on the other hand, they are under veterinary supervision and as soon as a disease that endangers humans is discovered, the entire herd is eliminated.. sounds bad, but this is the reality,
There are so many issues, but here I am referring to one of the most problematic that I have seen in my lifetime. There is no doubt that the growth of the human population and the resources it consumes to build our modern world leads to the total destruction of nature. You can see it here and in the rest of the world, and you don't even need media mediation This in the eyes of those who had time to walk the earth a few decades ago and for those who love nature and see it as a real value, it is very painful, we are not ready to do enough to preserve nature, it is not in our long-term super planning and it is not considered a real value for many From us and so over the years we bite into nature and leave only isolated reserves that are also gnawed away step by step, the worst thing for living is the taking over of the areas where they lived
And the transportation arteries which are almost an impassable wall for the animals if we take highway 6 as an example
To think that crossing such a road even for an alert person is almost impossible, it is a wall that separates hundreds of kilometers
Even as soon as there is an increase in transportation another example such as highway 90 or 40 for example because more people go on vacation means that the chances of crossing the road alive for an animal are much smaller (it used to be that it could lie on the road for fifteen minutes until a car arrived) and we are talking about a road system in a country like Israel from Metula to Eilat but this is true for most of the earth, one of the inventions that came to save humanity from global warming is the solar panels but the sterile area it takes is huge
And to mention that a violated area is, after all, an area where animals can pass between different area cells, another problem is the human behavior of stealing areas and war between countries that creates fences around huge areas, this too has a very high price in terms of nature
