Prof. Diamond said that he was happy about the award, and described his work and that of his award partner Prof. Joachim Messing in developing better varieties of plants and animals that will allow good nutrition for more and more people. He described his research that dealt with the domestication of animals and plants throughout history, most of which was done in the Middle East region, including where the modern state of Israel now resides.

President Peres said the words last night at a ceremony in which he awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize to eight outstanding scientists in a ceremony at the Knesset in Jerusalem.
