President Shimon Peres announced the establishment of an institute that will implement the developments of the Wolf Prize winners in agriculture, including Jared Diamond. Prof. Diamond said that he was happy about the award, and described his work and that of his award partner Prof. Joachim Messing in developing better varieties of plants and animals that will allow good nutrition for more and more people. He described his research that dealt with the domestication of animals and plants throughout history, most of which was done in the Middle East region, including where the modern state of Israel now resides.
President Peres said the words last night at a ceremony in which he awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize to eight outstanding scientists in a ceremony at the Knesset in Jerusalem. The ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Wolf Foundation Rabbi Shay Firon and the Speaker of the Knesset MK Meir Shatrit. The ceremony was moderated by the winner of the Nobel Prize and the Wolf Prize and the Chairman of the Wolf Foundation Prof. Dan Shechtman.
In his remarks to the winners, President Shimon Peres said: "I am proud to live in a vibrant and creative country whose cultural, scientific and technological achievements have earned it an honorable place in scientific progress. Small Israel in the field has gained greatness in science. Please accept my deep appreciation and my blessings for winning this important award. We say Because from Zion will come Torah, but Zion also thirsts for the coming of Torah from outside it - thank you to you."
In his words, the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Council of the Wolf Foundation, Rabbi Shai Piron, referred to the presence of outstanding students at the ceremony: "The State of Israel cannot afford not to engage in the cultivation of excellence and excellence." The Minister of Education addressed the award winners and said, "You are an example and role model for Israeli students." Piron added that "The presence of outstanding high school students in this ceremony emphasizes the value of excellence and the vision of excellence of the State of Israel." As previously mentioned, the five prizes, totaling 100 dollars, were divided this year between eight winners from four countries: in physics: Prof. Peter Zoller (Austria) and Prof. Juan Ignacio Sirac (Germany); in mathematics: Prof. George D. Mostov (USA) and Prof. Michael Artin (USA); in agriculture: Prof. Jared Diamond (USA) and Prof. Joachim Messing (USA); in chemistry: Prof. Robert Langer (USA); In the arts, this year the prize in the field of architecture will be awarded to architect Eduardo Soto de Mora (Portugal).
