The UN also states - we must find a solution to the world's water problem

Billions of people do not have access to clean water. As the weather changes, the situation will worsen. And with us - they waste their time and don't pray

Distribution of water on Earth
Distribution of water on Earth

According to published data, each person (in Western society) uses about 1000 cubic meters of water per year. Since the availability of water in the world is not equal, it is clear that in many areas the residents do not have the opportunity to obtain / reach the required amount. More than a billion people do not have constant access to drinking water. More than 2.6 billion people do not have access to and the possibility of using sanitary services (which include water). A lack of water harms the supply of food since a liter of water is needed to produce one calorie worth of food.

Because of the growth of the human population, the expected growth and proliferation of areas where a lack of water will be felt, the lack will also be felt in the Western world since a large part of the water is used for agricultural crops and to generate energy. In 2000, agricultural fields and power plants in the USA consumed 40% of the available water, when there is an expectation of a 50% increase in energy consumption by 2030, the pressure on water sources is clear.

Global warming will affect the water cycle (rain - snow, etc.), there will be more precipitation that will fall in concentrated amounts in a short time, that is, not rain that saturates the earth but "cloud fragments" that cause floods and damages, in large areas the rain will "replace" the snow, dams that have been built To store water that has melted (slowly), will not withstand the pressure of cloud fragments.

Considering the fact that in many areas (India - Western USA - parts of Europe and others), the sources of water are glacier water that melts, the warming causes rapid melting, which means again floods in the spring and lack in the summer. Some glaciers will disappear completely and the impact is clear.

To understand the significance of the importance of water, here is some data: 70 liters of water are needed to produce one apple, 900 liters to produce one kg of corn, 10850 liters to produce a pair of jeans, and 15500 kg of beef to produce 70 liters, 120% of the water in the world is used for food production, an American of origin consumes 700 kg of meat per year, three times the world average, a Chinese uses 2500 cubic meters of water per year... an American, 40. In Africa (mainly women) transport drinking water for XNUMX billion hours every year. Among the Millennium Goals set by the UN was the reduction of the "waterless" by half, today it does not seem that we are getting close to the goal.

Back to our yard. A short time ago I introduced the German hydrologist Mr. Messerschmidt to the readers, if only those responsible knew how to sort out the little chaff from the many chaff that Messerschmidt published and apply what is right and proper... we would be in a much better situation. According to a survey by the "Society for the Protection of Nature" many residents of the country are ready to save. Nice, but savings on a personal level will only give an emotional boost, (also interesting why many and not all). Personal savings will not solve Israel's water problems. The problem can be solved by correct use (reclamation, use of gray water, etc.) in industry as well as by saving in agriculture.

But above all by immediately stopping the pollution of the existing sources and creating new sources of desalination. Israel exports desalination and purification technologies to the entire world - including desert countries in the Arabian Peninsula. Using the technologies that were invented and developed here is the solution, the problem is that such use requires government intervention, when the minister in charge is the "genius" who pushes for the activation of electricity generation by a coal station, it is not difficult to understand where the problem is.

And another note / small clarification, the solution of many of the burning problems in Israel has been postponed under the excuse - security? So to the securityists' knowledge, many of the violent conflicts in the past were over water and the expectation is that most future conflicts will break out over water. So maybe a wise man will wake up to prevent one of the next conflicts by... producing water - desalination?

  1. The problem is even more serious - in the State of Israel which always suffers from a shortage of drinking water - it is against the law to install a gray water system. All this because of some official at the Ministry of Health who is afraid that his children will drink from the toilet...

  2. Very important article.
I agree that the lack of water is a serious security problem in the Middle East, a problem that will get worse.
New desalination methods must be developed. The reluctance to do so stems from high energy prices.
Thanks to Dr. Assaf Rosenthal for this important article.
Have a good and peaceful day
