The asteroid Ultima Thule - a summary of the findings of the New Horizons spacecraft so far

When the New Horizons spacecraft began to approach the planet Pluto, they already began to think about the next destination. The chosen target is a small body discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope on June 26.6.2014, 2014. The name it received upon its discovery was 69MU0.05. This was the catalog number he received. All they knew about it based on the first findings is that it is a tiny body on the order of the tiny asteroids, its color is reddish and that its light reflection from sunlight is 3.5%. The duration of the spacecraft's journey from Pluto to it was 4.1.2019 years. The arrival date was 3520. The crossing distance was 900 km and XNUMX photographs were broadcast to Israel. Each pixel of an image takes  About 7 hours to reach the earth. Therefore, all the information will reach the earth in full towards the end of 2020.

The larger part, 19 km long, was named Ultima and the smaller one was named Thule. It seems that these are two bodies that collided with each other and remained stuck together. The researchers' intention in choosing this body for their study is to take advantage of its great distance from the sun. The working assumption that at these distances from the sun there is primary material from the time of the formation of the solar system. For this reason, the thought was raised that upon completion of this goal, the spacecraft would be flown to another body in the Kuiper belt. This of course depends on the amount of fuel that will remain in the spaceship.

The facial features of this asteroid are relatively smooth and a crater with a diameter of 8 km was found on it which was named Maryland and small depressions with a diameter of up to 700 meters and it is estimated that they originate from the sublimation (appearance - direct transition from solid to gas) of gas which resulted in land subsidence. The connecting strip between the two parts of the asteroid is bright and looks like a neck. Clues to the presence of methanol, water ice and organic compounds were also found. These findings are of course only preliminary, but it is likely that when all the information is absorbed, the resulting picture will be much more detailed and will contain new insights.

    Comet Churyumov-Grasimenko (length about 5.6 km) is indeed smaller in dimensions than the asteroid Ultima-Tula (length about 33 km), but it resembles it in its general structure made of two bodies, of different sizes, connected by a kind of neck connection.
    Is this structural similarity coincidental? Or maybe indicates kinematic stability?

Perhaps there is a consistent process here of going from the simple to the complex, from the hydrogen of the big bang to living matter including us. This doesn't have to take us back to the Book of Genesis or to any mythology, but it means that we have to put up with the incomprehensible and not cling to the easy solution of the "Holy Coincidence Theory"

    First, 7 hours (more precisely: around 6 hours, depending on the position of the Earth) is the time it takes for the signals sent from the spacecraft to reach the Earth. The transmission rate of the spacecraft at these distances is about 1000 bits per second, and assuming that the transmitter is not compressed, and each colored pixel takes 24 bits, it can send about 42 pixels per second, or three times that in a grayscale image (and maybe less if you include error correction).

    Second, Tully definitely didn't crash Ultima. If they collided they would collapse into a round and boring snowball ball, because the primal property of matter (since the formation of the solar system) would be lost. Presumably, in this place they both circled their center of mass, over the course of billions of years they lost their self-spinning and became gravitationally locked in relation to each other, then came closer and had a relatively gentle encounter.

    Third, the common body looks like a snowman only from the angle of the shot where the spacecraft was (luckily so). Additional photos show that the larger body (Ultima) is quite flat. And anyway, they are connected along the long axis of both, which also indicates that they were gravitationally locked towards each other when they met.

  5. It's worth telling the truth: the scientists searched without finding the little prince - but it may turn out that the special shape of the asteroid is due to the fact that it is a fossilized snake that swallowed a dinosaur before taking off again into space.
