Dragging fishing nets in the oceans - a crime that must stop

Dragging causes the destruction of everything in the sea - corals, sponges, and countless fish, not all of which are suitable for food

In our country: fish are being poisoned in the only sweet lake in Israel, most of the media treat the event as if the harm is "only to fish and fishermen" a lukewarm attitude - to say the least. Will the "explainers" explain to me why not accuse the poisoner of devastating damage to our drinking water? Will the "explainers" explain to me why not accuse the poisoner of attempting to murder thousands of citizens? They will add and explain to me why not arrest and imprison everyone connected to the poisoning - the manufacturer of the poison who sold it to the dealer who sold it to the poisoner and so on? Indeed, where is the difference between their activity and the activity of drug or arms dealers?

It turns out that we do not have the sole right to damage and destruction: all over the world, researchers are aware of the ongoing damage to fish populations, when the fishing method with the help of trawling nets causes particularly destructive damage. Dragging nets with weights at the bottom that keep the net close to the ground, the net is dragged by the fishing vessel and sweeps everything away.

In the picture you can see the permanent dust trails that the drag causes, trails that most of them are not visible because of the depth at which the nets are dragged. Dust build-up is just one of the problems dragnets cause. The net sweeps up everything in its path, not only those fish I mean fish, but everything! The weights break and destroy everything in their path, corals, sponges, minnows and others all fall into the trawl nets.

in the picture and on video You can see with your own eyes how the trawl nets destroy the marine environment. University of Hawaii zoologist Les Watting

Les Watling - says that "trawl fishing is the most destructive activity in the ocean". Now that fish populations near the coasts are dwindling due to wild fishing, the destructive method is becoming more and more common.

Watting in collaboration with Elliott Norse Elliott Norse - Marine Conservation Biology Institute calculated and found that every year nets are dragged over an area twice the size of the USA.

The findings were presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The damage to the marine environment was already clear some time ago, and therefore regulations were established to prevent destructive fishing. In the Mediterranean Sea, towing is prohibited at a depth exceeding 1000 meters, on the coast of Alaska, towing is completely prohibited, many of the countries of the South Pacific Ocean are trying to stop towing, in the United Nations an activity has begun to ban towing throughout the seas.

Despite the bans, thousands of ships continue to drag nets on the coasts of Latin America, the Gulf of Mexico, the coasts of Africa, the waters of China and the North Sea. An activity that continues to destroy the marine environment.

I have no data on the activity of Israeli fishing vessels (in "tows"), but again, we simply poison them!

  1. Start repairing at home and only after you complete the job will you turn to see what is happening in the distant oceans. Dragging nets in the Mediterranean Sea near the coasts destroys the fishery and severely damages the habitat. Instead of confusing the mind and harassing sport fishermen who naturally have little loot, deal with the main problem that you have been avoiding for years.

  2. Dan, you are absolutely right.
But you should also take the next step,
You should simply stop eating fish and seafood (at least those that are not grown in agricultural farms).
The responsibility is not only on the fishermen but also on us, the consumers!

  3. Good broadcast. Rosenthal raised this issue.
The fishing nets, the whaling, tuna species in danger of extinction, the dolphins that find their death in the nets of the tuna fishermen, the sharks that Chinese fishermen catch massively, the salmon species that became extinct in Russia due to wild fishing and much more.
All this leads to a clear conclusion:
    You have to stop fishing!!!
