Every morning the fishermen of the coastal town of Laguna in southern Brazil go out to sea and spread their nets. In the murky waters of the Atlantic it is difficult to see where the fish are, but luckily for them, fishermen have helpers with superhuman abilities when it comes to navigating underwater. They aim the fish straight at the nets - and eat those that try to escape.
These assistants belong to a group of dolphins of the common dolphin species (Tursiops truncatus). When the fish are close enough to the fishermen, the dolphins signal with head or tail blows that it is time to cast the nets. As strange as it sounds, dolphins are not tamed. No man had ever taught them how to direct the fish towards the fishermen, or what movements to make to mark their position. Apparently they learned this from their parents - just as the fishermen learned from their parents how to cooperate with the dolphins.

In an article published in the journal Biology Letters, they showed that of the 55 dolphins in the group, only about 45% engaged in cooperative fishing with humans. And what's more interesting, the cooperative dolphins spent much of their time with each other - and not with the non-cooperative dolphins. These, for their part, preferred to hang out among themselves, and were usually not found near the collaborators. One dolphin, particularly sociable, preferred not to commit to one subgroup, and spent time with members of both groups.
The researchers also found that the social bonds in the subgroup of collaborators were stronger - they spent more time with each other, compared to dolphins from the other subgroup. Did the fact that these dolphins are more sociable help them learn the secrets of cooperative fishing with humans, or perhaps the joint activity with humans strengthened the bonds between the dolphins?
This question is difficult to answer, but it is clear that the good relationships between collaborators create a supportive environment, which may help in learning new behavior. The researchers intend to continue their research and test the genetic relationships between the dolphins in the different subgroups, to see if they are made up of relatives - and if the information about the fishing method is transmitted, as the researchers believe, from mother to offspring.
Dolphins have long been known as a particularly intelligent species, and they seem to learn easily from each other - many studies have shown that different populations around the world have developed traditions of fishing methods unique to them, which in some cases even include the use of tools.
