The Technion was chosen as one of 33 universities in the world to receive the HP Innovative Research Award for 2008. The award is designed to encourage collaborations with HP laboratories, with the aim of promoting high-impact research that will benefit both parties.

The Technion will collaborate with HP Laboratories, the main research arm of HP, in a research initiative that focuses on identifying significant patterns in information based on time-oriented events that comes from a variety of sources, for example, traces of computer systems, transmitters in a communication system, biomedical tests of patients , and expression levels of proteins in metabolic pathways. Professor Ron Pinter, the author of the winning proposal, who is a faculty member in the Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion, will lead the collaboration project together with Professor Yuval Shahar from the Center for Medical Informatics at Ben Gurion University.

"The Technion, as a leading technological university in Israel, invests heavily in research at the interface between life sciences and engineering," said Professor Moshe Isenberg, the Technion's vice president for research. "Professor Pinter's initiative is a wonderful example of such interdisciplinary activities. Furthermore, the cooperation with HP is particularly important to us, since we encourage joint activity with large global companies. The close ties between the Technion and HP are illustrated by the fact that HP laboratories in Israel chose to establish their website at the Technion."

"Event series is one of the main areas that the faculty has been focusing on in recent years," adds the dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion, Professor Oded Shmueli. "The research proposed by Professor Pinter and Professor Shahar takes a holistic approach to the problem, through the use of layers of knowledge regarding the relevant fields. Therefore, this is research suitable for academic-industrial collaboration of the type that HP promotes."

"Around the world, HP collaborates with the brightest minds in industry and academia to foster open innovation and shape the agenda for breakthrough technologies that aim to change the world," said Preet Banerjee, vice president of research at HP and head of HP Laboratories. "The choice of HP Laboratories to give the Technion the innovative research award for 2008 is based on the great achievements of the Technion, and will help promote the global research agenda of HP Laboratories in the pursuit of scientific breakthroughs."

He reviewed more than 450 proposals from two hundred universities in 28 countries, in a wide spectrum of topics within five main research areas at HP laboratories. An essential component of each award is support for a postgraduate research student, who will also be able to join the 2009 HP Internship Programme.

  1. Too bad you won't be able to come.

This specific material belongs precisely to David Ronan, but many bodies in Israel and around the world are investigating it. This is a material that is found in several places in the world and is highly sought after for research in military industries.

  2. Sounds very interesting. It sounds like there is a high probability that the material found belonged to the IDF in one way or another.

Now I'm even more sorry that I can't come :/

  3. 1. The reasons for the censorship stem from the simple reason that the incident happened in a military area witnessed by soldiers and also due to the fact that the material itself is of interest (to say the least) to the defense industries in Israel and the world (and they are directly involved in research). The original article was censored 10 years ago and since then there has been no permission for publication.

    2. Many scientific studies are classified and reach the hands of those who are allowed to see them, and are not published. There is a term known as "NEED TO KNOW". Only those who have permission to view certain studies (regardless of their security classification) are allowed to view these studies, if they directly relate to their occupation. For example, studies dealing with biological weapons, nuclear weapons, classified developments, etc., etc. This is not the place to go into detail, but the term "scientific freedom" is sometimes disconnected from reality. This is true all over the world and not just in a certain area.

  4. If you were curious, the reason is this:

About 10 years ago, silicon lumps were discovered in Israel at a landing site (what the hell do we call it that) in the southern region.

The blocks were sent for testing in several leading laboratories in Israel and around the world.

A Ma'ariv journalist at the time, David Ronan (now our association's spokesperson), prepared a detailed article about the studies and findings.

The article was fully censored by the military censorship.

Today it is allowed to present the findings to the general public only privately (like at the conference that will be held tomorrow). It is forbidden to upload the information to the mass media or publish the studies and those involved in them. It is only allowed to present the silicon blocks in the media, but without presenting the documents and research results.

    so:

    1. At the conference, all the findings and of course all the information known about the nodules (including the nodules themselves) will be presented without censorship.

    2. Below is a link to the interview that David Ronan gave to Channel 10, regarding the blocks (although without details about the studies and who is involved in them):

  5. The conference is in its place, on Thursday this week (28/8)...... In the meantime, all the contents and lectures have been detailed on the website and there will probably also be an article about the conference (with the exception of the last lecture, by David Ronan, which unfortunately cannot be published in the media due to a censorship problem)...
