In the SEEMOUS 2008 international mathematics competition, which was held these two days in Athens, Greece, the Israeli team recorded excellent achievements, with six members of the team winning medals (2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals) and the team finishing in fourth place, after the teams of Ukraine, Russia and Romania.

The President of the Israel Mathematics Association Prof. Michael Lin and the Secretary of the Association, Dr. Barak Weiss, both from Ben-Gurion University, stated that the SEEMOUS is an annual competition held in Southeast Europe for the second year, and is intended for undergraduate students in mathematics from all over the world. About 100 students from around the world participated in the competition. The first place was won by Christian Talao from Romania and among the Israelis Alexey Gladkich from Tel Aviv University and Amos On from the Open University stood out. The team was trained voluntarily by Alexey Belov-Kanal from Bar-Ilan University and Lev Radziblovsky, and was organized under the auspices of the Israel Mathematics Association.

Below is the list of winners.

  • Alexey Gladkich, 19 years old, silver medal
  • Amos On, 18 years old, silver medal
  • Noam Raphael, 25 years old, bronze medalist
  • Gal Dor, 13 years old, bronze medal
  • Oded Bet, 26 years old, bronze medal
  • Miriam Farber, 19 years old, bronze medal

The group was selected from among all undergraduate students in Israel and was voluntarily mentored by:
Lev Radziblovsky, Dr. Alexi Belov, O.N. Bar Ilan, Dr. Shahar Samrodinsky, O.N. Ben Gurion

It should be noted that the team is ready to participate and successfully represent Israel in other competitions, but it has difficulty doing so due to the lack of minimal funding.

  1. To Judah:

Considering the achievements of the last decade, one can try to start thinking about a turning point in the positive direction of course; What deserves special consideration is the relationship between the sons and the only daughter (Arad), which completely contradicts the findings of studies on the subject; so maybe we should start thinking about the results of the studies as well?

  2. So unfortunately fourth place among the countries is not something

  3. I received all the administrative material in a scanned file of several documents. It is difficult to extract data from there and the photos cannot be uploaded to the website due to all kinds of technical difficulties. If I counted correctly (I went through the list of participants one by one) then 22 national teams participated

  4. To Michael
    Thanks for the extension.
It is still interesting to know a fourth place out of several possible, i.e. how many countries participated.

  5. I spoke with Lev Radziblovski (one of the team's coaches) and he told me the following:
This is a student competition in which two types of teams participated - university teams and national teams.
Israel sent a national team and won, as mentioned, fourth place among all teams, but the teams ranked ahead of them were university teams:
Kyiv University, Polytechnic of Romania and Moscow University.
There were exactly six students in the Israeli team and each (!) of them returned with a medal.
He is supposed to send me files with additional data about the competition and if there is anything interesting there I will write another comment

  6. Data are missing on the number of countries that participated.
In addition, is it possible to understand that at least six of the hundred participants in the competition were Israelis?

    Some more data please.
