A new study found that smoking causes immediate damage to DNA, within minutes of inhaling cigarette smoke.

The researchers, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, USA, focused on substances found in cigarettes called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These substances are known to be carcinogenic and play a central role in the development of lung cancer, which causes to the death of 3,000 people a day around the world and about 1,300 Israelis every year. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism of PAH decomposition that enters the body through inhalation of cigarette smoke, without the intervention of other exposure factors such as air pollution and the food we consume.

The researchers followed the course of the material's decomposition in the bodies of 12 smokers. The participants in the study smoked a cigarette, and blood tests were taken from them after 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 240, 360, 560, 720 and 1440 minutes from the moment of inhalation. At each point in time, the concentration of the carcinogenic by-products in the blood plasma was checked.

The results of the study show that The maximum levels of the carcinogenic byproducts were found in the participants already 15-30 minutes after smoking the cigarette. After that, byproduct levels began to decrease. The researchers were amazed by this speed and claim it is similar to the speed that would have been obtained if PAH had been injected directly into the participants' bloodstream.

"Since the by-products of PAH decomposition are carcinogenic, the research findings indicate that smoking causes immediate genetic damage and a rapid increase in the short-term risk of cancer. This serves as a serious warning to people who are considering starting to smoke."the study editors wrote.

In response to the study, the Cancer Society stated: "Every day studies reveal more serious damages caused by smoking. About 10,000 people die every year as a result of smoking in Israel alone! People need to internalize the information, how dangerous tobacco products and their composition are for health. It goes without saying that it is always important to decide to stop smoking and it is even more important not to indulge in this deadly habit."

The study was published by the American Chemical Society in the scientific-professional journal Cancer Research in Toxicology.

  1. From * as:

I wanted to emphasize that the quality of life is more important than its length.
To your question in response 10, I don't know statistics about phenomena that shorten human life.
But out of the "wonderful" number 10000, to what percentage of those who perished is there a direct connection to indirect smoking?
After all, you will agree with me (at least according to your previous responses) that it is permissible for each person to find his own poison as long as it is possible
(within reasonable limits) does not harm his friend.

Therefore, for me, a person who smokes that I pass near and the smell of smoke bothers me, hurts me less than an annoying neighbor, for example.
By the way, what is the statistic that connects nerves with death... (at least for me the main source of nerves is actions
    Others).

  2. Moti:
Denigrating smokers is a very appropriate act.
If someone smokes in private rooms and does not disturb anyone - no one will despise him either.
If someone thinks that he is allowed to harm others - he deserves every reproach.
It is not to make money on the backs of addicts any more than the arrest of pedophiles is an abuse of those whom nature made them so.
On the contrary - pedophiles were born that way and smokers created their condition by the actions they chose to do.

By the way, the disdain you show in relation to the activities that have been done is really amazing because the quality of life has improved in this area beyond recognition.

    Credibility = 0?
    Nonsense!

    man:
    interesting!
Do you know many other man-made phenomena that kill 10000 people every year? It seems to me that you are really (but really!) exaggerating.
Cars, of course, die much less and unlike cigarettes - cars also save lives (probably a lot more - even if you only take the ambulances into account).

  3. I wonder what the difference is between the effects of cigarette smoke, car smoke, and exposure to the sun...
It just seems to me that life is dangerous, in the end everyone dies from it.
The greater importance is for the quality of life. It is true that smoking a cigarette without smokers is one of the annoying things.
But there are things that affect a person's quality of life much more.

  4. Yesterday I witnessed the audacity of a cigarette company that in vain bears the name of a very intelligent animal that serves as a ship in the desert.
Its representatives distributed leaflets and lighters inside the Tel Aviv University campus at some sort of student union event, in violation of the law. As soon as this came to the knowledge of the university they sent security personnel to show these representatives the way out. The law on the matter is clear, and it is also clear that the company representatives took advantage of the inexperience of the student union members who were eager to cover the costs of the event which included performances, booths, etc., and made them break the law.
It shows who we are dealing with.

  5. This is not about a lawsuit, it is about the very existence of an extermination camp that operates as a limited company
    Condemn something…
But unfortunately humanity only knows how to count money, and that doesn't bother anyone.

Despising the smokers and collecting more taxes from them sounds like Bo and we will make a jackpot on the drug addicts, several billions a year, satisfied with more as long as they continue to smoke.
panic!! It no longer creates maybe indifference you mean. Which means reliability=0
Or maybe the rehab companies will also turn on the smokers and take money from them.
When the percentage of weaners is only 3%.

  6. Moti:
First of all - as you can see at the end of the article - every year 10,000 people die and not only 1,300 from smoking damage (the 1,300 is only lung cancer but there are also cardiovascular diseases, emphysema and more).
The Cancer Society does what it can and one of the things it can do is publish articles like this.
The one who legislates laws is the Knesset and the ones who can sue them are the citizens who have been damaged (search for the word "lawsuit" in the search engine of the Cancer Society http://www.cancer.org.il/home/ )

Humiliating the smokers and collecting more taxes from them is an important thing and not a trivial matter.
Before passive smoking laws were passed, I once told someone who was smoking next to me on the bus that if he thought it was allowed to cause me cancer then he must agree that I was allowed to cause him to lose his teeth.

By the way, I do not share the panic that the current article is creating.
I mean, I totally agree that panic should be created but the point is that a sane person should have been panicked before.
After all, how important is it, how long does it take for DNA damage to occur?
If, for example, they told you that the damage is not so extreme and it only appears two days or a month after smoking - would that have calmed you down?

Please note that the article does not talk about the duration of smoking but only about the "incubation" time of the phenomenon from the moment of smoking.

  7. One more disturbing question
If 1,300 people die from cigarettes a year
How is it that the cigarette companies like Dubek operate in Israel without any hindrance.
After all, it's murder, these companies kill people with gas and take their money.
It could easily be compared to an extermination camp in slow motion.

What exactly is the Cancer Society doing about this?
Except to humiliate the smokers, and in this way collect more taxes from them.

  8. If more reliable and correct studies were published, then they would probably take on a different meaning.
It's just a shame that nowadays the results come before the research (the research is adapted to the results you want to get)
