Report: smokers shorten their lives by about 14 years

The report published in the USA states that smoking damages almost every organ in the body. Its editors claim that the data show that "the situation is worse than we thought"

The commissioner of public health services in the USA, Dr. Richard Carmona, published a special report at the end of the week on the health damage caused by smoking in the USA. The report shows that since 1964, about 12 million Americans have died as a result of smoking and another 25 million Americans will die as a result of the harms of smoking - smoking causes the death of 440 thousand Americans every year. Carmona also states that on average men who smoke shorten their lives by 13.2 years, while women who smoke shorten their lives by 14 and a half years. The economic burden of smoking in the US is estimated at approximately 157 billion dollars annually, of which 75 billion dollars in direct health expenses and 82 billion dollars due to loss of productivity at work.

The report, which contains 960 pages, lists for the first time a series of evidences that show that smoking damages almost every organ in the body. Among other things, the report states that smoking causes diseases such as cervical cancer, cataracts, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, blood cancer and kidney cancer. This, in addition to diseases that are already known to be caused by smoking such as various heart diseases, throat cancer, throat cancer and lung cancer.

Other diseases that may be related to smoking have also been found, but further research is needed to verify this. Among the diseases: colon cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer as well as impotence problems in men. No connection was found between breast cancer and smoking, however in some cases the combination between smoking and a certain genetic structure may increase the risk of contracting the disease.

Quitting smoking has immediate consequences

"For decades we knew that smoking was harmful to health, but this report shows that the situation is worse than we thought," said Carmona, "the toxins from cigarettes flow everywhere the blood reaches." The American health minister, Tommy Thompson, said: "We must reduce smoking in the country and in the entire world. Smoking is the number 1 cause of disease and death, even though it is preventable. It costs us too many lives, too many dollars and too many tears."

The data of the report shows that for every premature death of a person who used to smoke, about 20 other smokers remain alive, but they suffer from diseases that result from their choice to smoke. The editors of the report also state that the "lite" cigarettes do not provide any health advantage over regular cigarettes. "There is not a single cigarette that is safe, even if it is called 'light' or 'ultra-light' or by any other name," said Dr. Carmona, "the scientific results are clear - the only way to avoid the health problems caused by smoking is to stop smoking or not to start to smoke at all".

The report's editors point out that quitting smoking has immediate consequences on the health of the body and that this leads to a significant reduction in the risk of contracting diseases caused by smoking. "Within minutes to a few hours from the moment the smoker smokes his last cigarette, his body begins a series of changes that last for years. By quitting smoking today, the smoker can guarantee himself a healthier future tomorrow," Carmona said. According to him, it is not too late to quit smoking. Quitting smoking at the age of 65 also reduces the risk of contracting smoking-related diseases by 50%.

24.3% of graduates in Israel smoke

The Health Minister's report on smoking in Israel in 2003 indicates that the percentage of smokers in the adult population as a whole is 32% - 24.3% among men and 18.4% among women. The percentage of smokers increases gradually with age - from 18.8% among 24-21 girls to a peak of 25.7% among 54-45 girls. On the other hand, among men the percentage of smokers steadily decreases with increasing age.

Advertisement The more educated the male population, the smaller the proportion of smokers in it. Among Arab women, the trend is the opposite: only 5.9% of women with low education smoke compared to 27.6% of female academics. Among the employees, almost half of the men and about a third of the women are exposed to smoking at their workplace.

4.7% of students in grades 28, 20 and 15 smoke at least once a day. About 2002% of students who smoke every day consume 43.7-38 cigarettes a day. From the surveillance carried out by the IDF, it appears that the percentage of smokers in their military service has increased by about a third: the share of smokers among those released from mandatory service in 32.2 is 29.8% of the soldiers and XNUMX% of the female soldiers. In contrast, among the conscripts, XNUMX% of the men and XNUMX% of the women smoke.

  1. I think we should encourage smoking (of course in closed places that won't affect the sane population)

The smokers work until the age of 67 but die and contribute their pension payments to the common good.
They do not get to use the health services like their brothers who live to the age of 80-90
They do not need long-term nursing care...

As Humphrey Appleby said…. Smokers are the national benefactors!

  2. It doesn't work out for me: "The percentage of smokers in the adult population as a whole is 32% - 24.3% among men and 18.4% among women." Is the percentage of smokers among those who are not men or women that high?!
Also, in the title of the first row, 24.3% of adult men in Israel should be smokers. Or we are not talking about adults, in any case there is a mistake here.
(I got here via "Did you know?")

  3. Michael:
We've already seen what came out of a truly uncultured 'moderate' people.
Excessive and unnatural asceticism finally drives out in one direction or another 'demons' looking for their exit.
Not everyone is built the same and it is impossible to impose the same 'needs' and 'motives' on an entire society.

  4. Hugin:
The point is that smoking a pipe (and even a peace pipe) does not prevent wars.
Wars should be avoided and smoking should also be avoided.

  5. age:
What is? Did you search the combination of the words "research" and "smoking" on Google?
None of the above links belong to the topic. Did you notice?
When you write "even though almost all websites on the internet show damage to the facial skin" I'm sure you've never checked even two percent of the websites on the internet, but it really doesn't matter because it - as mentioned - is irrelevant.

  6. age:
    Yes.
I think that's what they really did.
You didn't tell us what you read.
You don't want us to think that your Penst belongs to those 90%, do you?

  7. Well, it seems to you that this is what they really did
90% of internet posts about cigarettes are recycled garbage
And not something that stands behind real research

  8. Hugin:
    What are these conspiracy theories?
The tobacco and cigarette manufacturers are the serious capitalists in the whole story and you claim that the results of the studies are falsified to their detriment due to capital considerations?
Einstein got addicted to smoking as many other addicts do but it happened to him before the knowledge of the harms of smoking was common.
Those who are addicted indeed find in smoking an outlet for tensions that would not have arisen in them if they had not become addicted.
When you say it is unknown what is addictive, you must mean yours is unknown.
It is known in the scientific world that nicotine is addictive. point. It is not a psychological issue but a chemical issue and the detoxification treatments use this information.

    age:
Did you read and not find?
Come tell us what you read.
Finding this figure is really easy: you check what the average age of death of smokers is compared to the average age of death of non-smokers.
To do this, all that is needed is to check - for each deceased person - whether they smoked or not.

  9. I read and found no data on how they reached this finding of 14 years
Which means it's just another internet spam
who throw studies out of their ass

  10. To your question 'Why couldn't Einstein live another 10-15 years?'.. (if he would have agreed with this article.. and of course he would not have enjoyed it): For what exchange a wonderful moral/human and scientific eternity that he won for a few more years, of "Authority.. which was in his eyes, abominable.. (quote: As a punishment for despising authority, fate appointed me myself to authority" September 18, 1930 saying to a friend in Hoffmann, Yozer and Mord, p. 24) and if you also remember he refused to serve as "authority" ' President of the State of Israel when it was offered to him.
Regarding 'death' he said in 1930: "It's signed and done with me, that when my time comes I will return to Afri with a minimum of medical help, and until then I will continue to sin and follow my lustful desires." (Letter to Elsa Einstein).
And more in his old age: "I want to go when I want to. After all, it's pointless to prolong life artificially. I've done my part: it's time to go. I'll do it elegantly." (Quoted by Helen Doukas in a letter to Abraham Faiz).

Regarding the studies regarding the effect of tobacco:
There is a belief/even a 'suspicion', that the tobacco used in the cigarette industry 50 years ago is different in its composition from the materials that make up the tobacco and cigarette industry in the world today.
There are still old companies that are loyal to the 'purity' of the source, and there are also the large industrialized companies, as well as the quirks that pour quantities into the 'consumer' market, who don't exactly know how to distinguish and diagnose the fine difference between the combined synthetic and the original. What's more, these reports don't have detailed and precise scientific distinction and investigation In-depth and thorough to what types of tobacco the smokers are exposed to, the only indication is the definition: 'smokers' ..quite superficial..and inclusive I would say. It is certainly possible to conduct more specific and detailed studies that give more learned indications.
The point is that it is difficult to conduct unbiased studies in the face of the pressures of competing copycat companies that control capital and a 'sensitive' product, what's more, it is not clear what the 'addictive factor' is:? The acquired psychological habit and/and certain additives in dubious cigarettes designed to sell a crowd of consumers to their wares.

  11. Don't forget that smoking was recommended until 50 years ago!!! to pregnant women by any family doctor and this is because they claimed that in addition to being relaxing it also prevents uncontrollable hunger attacks and a lot of other nonsense...

Of course, all this was before the publication of the findings of the various studies and tobacco companies.

  12. Hugin:
In the past, they knew less about smoking than they do today.
They also knew less about cholesterol and any disease.
Archimedes, Euclid, Galileo and Newton never took antibiotics. Does this mean we need to re-examine whether antibiotics are helpful?
Galois died in a duel. Does this mean we should see a duel in a positive light?
In fact, your argument is a general argument against any progress because every time something new is discovered, we are in a situation where all the greats who lived up to that day did not use the innovation until it was discovered.

  13. And why couldn't Einstein live another 10-15 years and continue to contribute to humanity, if not from a scientific point of view, then at least as a moral authority? He died at the age of 76. During his time, the tobacco companies still managed to block the publication of research on the effects of tobacco.

  14. It is not pleasant to 'miss' the research trend in this article. But nevertheless, how do you explain the phenomenon that wonderful people who left 'eternal' works in our lives smoked during their lives and their output and even became valuable 'smokers' for us.. see example: Tolkien, and The Lord of the Rings ..Rowling and Harry Potter..
And here is what Einstein said regarding pipe smoking: "Pipe smoking contributes to a calm and objective judgment of human affairs" (accepted as a lifelong member of the Pipe Smokers' Club in Montreal: quoted in the 'New York Times', March 12, 1950...).
In fact, the studies may need to be more individualized and specific according to the different types of tobacco smoking and their composition (whether or not they include synthetic chemicals) and the ways of 'filtering' them (proper filtration and types of inhalation habits).
*There is no recommendation in my response to smoke, for those who are not 'attracted' to the matter or for those who 'touched' and did not benefit from an acquired habit of 'such'.. and especially if they do not have a magnificent creation to bequeath to humanity.. 😉
