Sitting causes obesity of the buttocks

A new study at Tel Aviv University demonstrates how a static lifestyle leads to obesity * The researchers examined the mechanics of the obesity process when static pressure is applied to the fat cell, similar to sitting

A new study from Tel Aviv University reveals for the first time the obesity process at the fat cell and fat tissue level, and shows how a static lifestyle encourages excess weight independently of dietary habits.
The new study, the findings of which are published in the Biophysical journal, was conducted by Prof. Amit Gefen, Dr. Natan Shaked, and PhD student Naama Shem from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with Prof. Dafna Benyahu from the Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology at the School of Medicine Sackler at Tel Aviv University.

"About two years ago, Prof. Benyahu and I received a grant from the National Science Foundation in order to cooperate in researching the engineering of obesity," says Prof. Geffen. "We found that if a static mechanical load is applied to fat cells - they produce up to 50% more fat. This was the first time that the connection between obesity and a static lifestyle was proven, without any relation to diet. A person who sits all day on his butt, that is, exerts static mechanical pressure on his fat tissue, will get fatter than a person who exerts dynamic mechanical pressure on his fat tissue - and this is separate from the amount of hamburgers they both eat. Fat tissue reacts to mechanical loads in the opposite way from bone and muscle tissues: while bone and muscle tissues degenerate under static mechanical load, fat tissues actually gain mass."

In their new study, the researchers sought to examine how the fat cell changes mechanically when it accumulates fat. "The fat cell produces lipid droplets," explains Prof. Geffen. "These droplets merge with each other into larger and larger droplets, until the entire cellular space is filled with one large drop of fat. This internal pressure forces the cell, and eventually the entire tissue, to expand, that is, to fatten up. But we suspected that there are other mechanical properties, besides the expansion, that contribute to obesity."
To examine the mechanics of the obesity process, Prof. Geffen and his colleagues used an atomic force microscope, which is capable of measuring mechanical resistance at the cellular and organelle level. "We proved that the fat washes affect not only the size of the cell, but also the hardness of the cell," says Prof. Geffen. "If I am a fat cell and I expand and harden, then I push the cells next to me in a way of static mechanical loading. The result is a snowball or vicious cycle: a fat cell that produces fat mechanically pushes the other fat cells to also produce fat in an accelerated manner. This is actually the cellular equivalent of sitting for a long time on a chair or lying on the bed for a long time. From the cellular level to the physical level, we were able to show how a static lifestyle encourages obesity - apart from nutrition, genetics and other factors that affect body weight."

According to the World Health Organization, about half a billion people are overweight, and it is one of the five main causes of morbidity in the world. "If we know how to mechanically manipulate these cells, we can reduce fat from people who are overweight and add fat to people who are underweight in ways other than diet regimens. It is also possible to think of other applications, from natural breast implants to mechanical stimulation of the fatty tissues of astronauts during long stays in space. These days we are developing additional experimental and computerized models in order to examine fat cells under different regimes of mechanical loading."

  1. Skeptic, I happened to see quite a few of your comments and I must say that I was impressed by you and came to the conclusion that you are
A very very very stupid man.

  2. withering
Repeat message because something went wrong in the previous message.

It was claimed as a conclusion from the study that "a static lifestyle encourages obesity". This is a stupid conclusion.

There is no connection between the accumulation of fat near the tissue that is under pressure, and a "static lifestyle."

The accumulation of fat near a place of pressure is not fundamentally different from the formation of a callus near an area of prolonged pressure in a shoe, the tissue reacts abnormally to pressure in a place where naturally there should be no pressure. I'm talking here about a wart (which needs to be removed during a pedicure), not blisters. I happen to have warts as if on my foot and I vomit the phenomenon Personal information. I also know which shoes caused the callus (crockers).

What I am claiming is that the phenomenon of a foot wart due to a tight shoe or the accumulation of fat in the buttock area due to sitting too long have nothing to do with obesity or not being obese due to a static lifestyle.

A verbal analogy is used to draw an equal conclusion on two completely different processes.

A static lifestyle may or may not encourage obesity. I'm not getting into an argument. But what does this have to do with tissue deformation due to prolonged physical pressure on them or in their environment?

Nothing to do with what is called a "static lifestyle" here. A static lifestyle does not create any stress on any tissue. Verbal analogy is used to derive an equal derivation on two completely different ù.

  4. This research reached miraculous results, which we had no idea about. From the research I conducted, it turned out that standing on the head for a long time - flattens it and pushes the ears apart, and this is how a person's stereophonic hearing is impaired...

  5. A daughter and a skeptic,
Where does your disdain come from? Maybe you didn't understand and you are rushing to judge unjustly?
Batya, for example, I think you missed the intention of the researchers with the idea of adding natural implants that will create static pressure in the fat tissue and thus cause it to increase, just because of the existence of that static pressure. After all, the connection between the things is clear and understandable and stems directly from the findings of the researchers, what exactly are you wondering about? Maybe every donkey knows that prolonged sitting causes degeneration, but it is evident that not every donkey knows what the mechanism is that contributes to obesity following the application of static pressure on fat tissue (as happens with prolonged sitting). "The excuse of mechanical replacement of parts of the body instead of a little exercise"? Please read again, it seems you didn't understand what was written there.
Skeptic, what is unclear? A lifestyle in which there is little movement inevitably leads to continuous static pressure on fatty tissues, for example in the buttocks in the case of prolonged sitting that characterizes office work for example. In this context, what would you call the lifestyle of someone who sits in an office most of the day? A dynamic lifestyle?
"When sitting for a long time there is a lot of pressure on the tissues of the buttock and this affects it, just as pressure in shoes creates a wart." What is the connection between this sentence you wrote and the new finding that static pressure on adipose tissue leads to an increased accumulation of fat in that tissue, what the hell does this have to do with warts?! The conclusions drawn by the researchers are not far-reaching and are really required by the results of the study, especially since it is emphasized that this is a mechanism that is not related to nutrition.

It's really not clear to me where your disdain comes from, especially when it's obvious that you both didn't understand what it was about and what was claimed there. For the avoidance of doubt, I have nothing to do with this study or any of the researchers mentioned in the article.

  6. What is the connection between natural breast implants and obesity? Every donkey knows that prolonged sitting causes degeneration. If the respected researchers wanted to investigate the issue of obesity - good for them. But the excuse of mechanical replacement of parts of the body instead of a little exercise - very lame.

  7. Boring for researchers and they probably sat on their heads for a long time, because he doesn't think.

What does prolonged sitting have to do with a "static lifestyle"? There is no connection. Sitting for a long time puts a lot of pressure on the tissues of the buttock and affects it, just as pressure in shoes creates a wart. So do you draw far-reaching conclusions from this about damages due to a "static lifestyle"?
