Professor Dan Shechtman at a press conference in Stockholm: I didn't break because I believe in my science

"I didn't break down in my lonely years in the academic world, because I believe in my science." This is what the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2011, research professor Dan Shechtman from the Faculty of Materials Engineering at the Technion, said at a well-attended press conference held at the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. The personal drama of Professor Shechtman, whose discovery of quasi-periodic crystals the scientific community refused to acknowledge for years, concentrated most of the attention of the many journalists.

A journalist from the Romanian radio asked: "What is the Technion's secret that in seven years has produced three Nobel laureates"? To this Professor Shechtman replied: "I have been at the Technion for 50 years. It was not easy for me to be admitted to it and it was not easy for me to be a student. On the sign at the entrance to Kiryat Technion, an anonymous student added: "A city without mercy," he said to the laughter of the audience. "Indeed, it was very difficult. In my time, if you failed one course you had to repeat a whole year. But our graduates know that they are getting the best training. The investment in new faculty members is also very large today. In my time, I didn't even have a laboratory at the beginning. Today, every new faculty member receives a sophisticated laboratory with an investment of a million dollars or more. But the good education at the Technion is not enough. The State of Israel must invest in education at all levels. And apart from that," Professor Shechtman concluded, "the Jewish mother also has an important role here."

Professor Saul Perlmutter, a Nobel laureate in physics from the University of Berkeley, was quick to agree with him about the Jewish mother. Professor Brian Schmidt from Australia, also a Nobel laureate in physics, emphasized that a massive institutional investment in science and scientific education is also extremely essential, although he did not dismiss the cultural aspect.

The winners of the prize in physics (Brian Schmidt, Adam Reis and Sol Perlmutter), the winners of the prize in economics (Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims from the USA) and Professor Danny Shechtman, who unlike the others - won the prize alone, without partners, participated in the press conference. All those present agreed that this may be the last time there is a single groom in any field, given the increase in international and inter-academic collaborations in scientific research.

Today (Thursday) Professor Shechtman will lecture about his discovery to students and faculty members at Stockholm University.

  1. In Nature there is an article that cools the enthusiasm a bit. Saran's scientific director is quoted there as saying that it is not a proof, but not yet a refutation. Anyway, I'll be on standby.

  2. Exciting news:
I learned from a very reliable source that the Higgs boson, the mass-carrying particle, had been discovered
At the LHC accelerator in Sern, Switzerland.
The rumors (founded in this case) have been circulating in the physicist community for about two weeks.
On 13-12-2011, a press conference will be held in Seren where the discovery will be announced.
I assume that the discovery is already known to many, but they are prevented from publishing it before publication
the official Since the ethical limitation that applies to professionals does not apply to me, as a reader,
I credit the science site with the right to be the first, or at least among the first
to publish the discovery. As mentioned, the source is reliable...cast concrete (Bozon).
I repeat again: the Higgs boson was discovered at the LHC. Mazel Tov.

First, you must understand that the concepts "dark mass" and "dark energy" are at this stage
Code names for observational phenomena that still have no explanation.
You are wrong in thinking that the scientific explanation for the above phenomena has already been found.
Since this is the way things are, there is no reason for your claim that the "dark mass" and "dark energy"
do not exist. I have already written this to you before and others have also done so. Maybe relax?
Second, it seems to me that you would do well to refrain from giving explanations for these phenomena.
Do you imagine that expert scientists in the field have not heard of the idea of pressure differences?
This is really ridiculous. Apparently the world is a little bit more complex than you tend to describe it.

  4. Well, this is a special case. Here we are talking about a person who saw a phenomenon that others did not see. And so he has something to rely on in his insistence. He actually insisted that what he saw was not a hallucination. He insisted on his sanity.
This is not about people who just insist on their idea just because it is theirs. Like all those with petty feelings of superiority.

  5. Say what you will but I have at least two figures for the prize
    A. An idea that everyone rejects (gaseous universe and pressure difference instead of gravity)
    B. Jewish mother.
Tonight I will sleep with a smile
    Suri dark mass!
    Onward energy as above!

Please respond gently and with a smile
    Good night
    (:))
