Do large holes in the fishing nets actually help the fish population to recover? Not sure

One of the accepted methods in fishing is the use of nets with large holes that allow only the adults (big) to be fished, while the young fish are not caught, they continue to exist and grow, the thought behind the method which is considered positive for the environment / sustainable, is that in this way the damage to the fish population is repaired by the young that are not perceived, are they?

Elsewhere, the phenomenon of "evolution by a hunter" is known and recognized, the African elephants were hunted for many years mainly as "ivory suppliers", the main killing began at the beginning of the 19th century and continued until the middle of the 20th century, hunters preferred to kill individuals with large tusks, the hunter The selective gave an existential/evolutionary advantage to those with small tusks and the result... Today, many years after hunting was banned, most of the elephants in the field carry small tusks, much smaller than those that can be seen in photos from about a hundred years ago.

Back to fish. Researchers who made an experiment in two artificial lakes report their findings in: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. According to the findings: more "cheeky" fish grow faster and they are the ones whose chances of being caught in nets are greater, meaning that the big "cheeky" are removed from the system and do not reproduce.
With the term "cheeky" the researchers describe the fish that take more risks in search of food, meaning that even in fishing with rods they are the ones that will be caught first. A situation in which the "shy" who grow slowly - reach sexual maturity when their physical size is relatively small, that is, the "shy" are the ones who will stand the next generations. Being small affects low reproductive capacity. Small and "old" fish produce fewer offspring and the population weakens. This is how a fishing method that is considered sustainable affects the evolution in the direction of small fish whose ability to renew the population is low. This is how the researchers explain a situation in which even after fishing is banned in certain areas, the fish population does not recover as expected.

The conclusion of the study is that since fishing/fish are one of the most important sources of food for human populations, it is appropriate to consider the various fishing methods in order to avoid damage that cannot be repaired".

In the meantime, it turns out that despite a European and international convention (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to reduce tuna fishing by half - from 55,000 tons to 28,000 tons by fishing vessels
from the Mediterranean countries. Despite decisions to limit fishing, a fleet of about 620 vessels continues to fish wild. According to the World Conservation Organization WWF, in order to meet the cut of the quotas, approximately one third of the ships must be disabled, and again according to the convention the weight of fish allowed in fishing was increased from 10 kg to 30 kg, with reference to the REM study there is no certainty that such a restriction will benefit the tuna population.

The time has come that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there will be control of the human population for the sake of the environment

  1. Since today's countries are more aware of ecological hazards, more teams are being established that examine solutions with a different perspective and an innovative approach to solving the problem of fishing in the sea.
As they say, the Jewish head exhausts us and that's exactly how it is.
Just in the last few days, a new project was approved that will define and expand the pilot fish farming project in the Mediterranean and allow us to stand as pioneers in the greater world in the face of the fish crisis that is getting worse and worse around the world.
Opposite the shores of Israel, a system of breeding sea fish in cages was established in Tiffin Tiffin by pioneering people dedicated to their work in really difficult conditions, a true Zionist vision
This system of cages will actually provide a showcase for the whole world that such a small country with people with desire and vision and ability can change the face of nature, "just like Herzl said if you want it is not the West Bank"

    Right in 100%

  3. Michael does not have to be particularly smart to see the effect of intelligence on the evolution of fish, in this case it is an intelligent evolution full of gray matter if many holes.

  4. I wonder where and why all those who constantly claim that evolution is just a theory have disappeared.

  5. Ami:
I actually understand why people try to save humanity and find it hard to understand those who want to leave the job to mother nature. I mean, the phrase mother nature is not really appropriate because in my opinion the attempt of humans to save humanity is entirely her own doing, so you probably mean only the cruel side of mother nature, the same side that will prevail.
Do you think mass starvation is really better than solutions to prevent it?

  6. Dear Lesbadramish,
The amount of fish in the sea today is such that it does not allow fishermen much choice of where they can fish. There are very specific places where you should fish and there is a constant consumption of all the fish caught. The idea of fishing in one place and then moving to another place is a good idea, but in practice it is not useful because the choice does not really exist.

The idea of controlled breeding (as well as fish biotechnology, with all that implies) is actually not a bad idea at all, but what? In order to grow a tuna fish of tuna weight I sometimes have to invest years of feeding and caring for growing conditions while in the sea, all I have to do is throw a net. How can you compete with that?

In fact - it is possible. Fish are raised in ponds. It's not a secret. But both their cost is greater and the environmental damage from fish ponds is personally problematic in itself (eg the Eilat Bay and the fish cages).

Personally, I don't understand why everyone is trying to save humanity all the time. There are too many people, there is too little food, there is uncontrolled consumption and there is an uneven distribution of the food around... well? What would happen in nature? The self-harming population is shrinking. There is simply no choice. Whether it will be in a controlled manner by reducing the birth rate or by methods a little less pleasant than Mother Nature's creator, such as mass starvation of the unlucky.

  8. To the cool commenter:
I've been a vegetarian for over half a year and I'm perfectly healthy.
Every problem in the field has an easy solution to implement.

  9. To Dr. Assaf Rosenthal, and others
    Two options for a solution:-
    The first option:-
What do you think about the solution where total fishing will be carried out, but only in some of the fishing areas. In other areas no fishing will be carried out at all. After a few years, the areas will be replaced. With this method there will be no evolution of the small and shy.

    The second option:-
A solution for the large fishing farms, in which preference will be given to raising the large ones by humans, just like in cattle barns or chicken coops.

  10. The problem is that the consumption of fish and food in the world is increasing.

On the one hand, we need to reduce fishing and hunting so that we can continue to exist even later, and on the other hand, we need to provide food for humans.

    What to do?

  11. It turns out that the theories that until recently were thought to be true (like the story about the elephants that I didn't know or the story about the size of the mesh holes that I knew about)
comes back to us like a boomerang... and shows that they are probably not exactly what we thought...

So we study at the "University of Life"

  12. More than 6.66 billion people live in the world today.
About one billion people in the developed world consume on average 32 times more than most of the remaining 5.6 billion people.
Most of the inhabitants of the planet live in a level of consumption like that of Kenya.
If the rest of the world joins in the celebration, such a scale is mathematically equivalent to the current consumption rates of 72 billion people in the world.
The world cannot support 72 billion people.

Contrary to your opinion, the situation in the world today is excellent, it is really good
    And couldn't be better.
He can only be worse and much...

It is true that the US and the West will enter a recession in the coming years
And Western consumption will drop by several good percentages.
But China will become the #1 world power within a few years
Its consumption will jump 11 times the current consumption.
