The robots will patrol instead of the soldiers

Is it possible to do on land what drones - pilotless planes - do in the air? An algorithm developed in the computer science department at Bar-Ilan University will allow the use of a troop of robots for patrolling and observation against enemy intrusions. New robotic development in Bar-Ilan: the independent security and intelligence measures without human contact are also coming to land... Dr. Gal Kaminka, a researcher in the computer science department at Bar-Ilan University, presented today (Thursday) at the science fair to be held at the Wahl Center at the university, the group of robots he developed, which are able to divide the sectors between them without human intervention, and to respond quickly to any invasion, thus replacing Actually the soldiers' tours.

"Each robot has a variety of sensors - video, infrared, sound wave detection and more, its own "brain" and systems that allow it to be independent and carry out the task, but to properly handle the case of an intrusion, the group of robots must be coordinated," explains Kaminka. "A robot band is a group of robots working together for a common goal. Today we demonstrated the work of a group of robots in patrol missions. The robots can patrol forwards, backwards, to the sides - the entire length of the fence or the entire area they are supposed to protect. That is why it is important that each robot knows where the others are located and what they are doing at a given time."

"The algorithm we developed, as part of a more comprehensive project funded by the defense system, allows the robots to patrol together as a group in an optimal way. During the development stages, we proved that if each robot works independently and ignores the other members of the group, this will expose the system they are protecting to harm. On the other hand, when the robots work in a group, even an enemy who knows everything about them will have difficulty penetrating their defense network, because he will not be able to predict their movement."

According to the current planning, the developers do not intend to equip the robots with weapons, but only with sensors and in the event of an alert, the involvement of flesh and blood soldiers will be necessary, Kaminka says.

"The trend of integrating robots in the army has been going on for many years" says Kaminka. "Until now, we have mainly known the drones in the air, which are easier to operate because they do not have to deal with obstacles and difficult terrain conditions. Onshore tools require greater complexity and complicated mechanics. This is definitely a first and important step on the way to integrating essential and manpower-saving terrestrial robotics in the army."
