The Director of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture presented this week (Sunday) to the fishermen's representatives a broad and comprehensive plan aimed at, among other things, the restoration of the fish population of the Mediterranean Sea and the Kinneret, which are dwindling. According to the plan, the state will invest over NIS 15 million in the next four years, in the development of the fishing industry and the restoration of the fishery. As part of the plan, the marine fishing industry will be developed and upgraded in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Kinneret and the Gulf of Eilat.

According to the plan, and within the framework of the recommendations of the OECD organization, the fishing fleet operating off the coast of Israel will be reduced by approximately 50%, from approximately 500 vessels to approximately 250, while providing compensation to fishermen who choose to disable their vessels. That is, the state will purchase the decommissioned fishing vessels, according to a compensation model that will be determined later, leaving about 250 active fishermen.

For several years there has been a global trend of a decrease in the amount of fish. The phenomenon is even more serious in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean and the coasts of Israel. Experts in the field believe that since the blocking of the flow of the Nile to the Mediterranean Sea in the early 50s, with the construction of the Aswan Dam, the amount of fish in our area is getting smaller and smaller due to a lack of natural food. To this figure are also added the pollution of the sea water by factories and the well-known phenomenon in our region of fish hatching and a delay in their development compared to their peers of the same species living on the coasts of Italy and France.
In order to deal with the decrease in fishing, the ministry presents its plan for the next four years, according to which, as mentioned, the fishing fleet will be reduced by about 50%, and there will be a significant expansion and deepening of the enforcement activity against boats that carry out illegal fishing, and the expansion of the fishing survey carried out by the ministry For a more in-depth study of the state of the fishery resource. The survey will examine the situation in different fishing areas, the fishing effort invested by the fishermen, etc.

The new program of the Division for Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture joins the operations carried out by the division in routine for the preservation of the fish population in the Mediterranean Sea.

Haim Anjuni, Director of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture: "The Ministry of Agriculture carries out enforcement actions against illegal fishing. In addition, for the past 12 years the ministry has not issued new fishing licenses, so the number of active fishermen has been kept constant all these years. The new plan is being formulated by us these days and is in discussions with the Ministry of Finance, and its purpose is to encourage the active fishermen to retire. In my estimation, following the plan, the face of the fishing industry will change from one end to the other."

A fishing vessel was caught trying to catch tuna off the coast of Tel Aviv without a fishing license
At this time of the year, tuna fish pass by off the coast of the State of Israel and the fishermen tried to catch them and sell them to the highest bidder. The inspectors of the fisheries division of the Ministry of Agriculture with the assistance of the maritime police in Tel Aviv, seized the ship during the holiday and the three fishermen who were on it were interrogated under a warning

Notice of the Ministry of Agriculture, 31/5/2009

The inspectors of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and the marine police officers of the Israel Police apprehended during the Shavuot holiday three fishermen who were engaged in illegal fishing about 12 km from the coast of Tel Aviv. The three fishermen were engaged in fishing in the deep sea and used floating rod arrays that spread over thousands of meters and are able to collect dozens of fish in each fishing operation. The fishermen acted in violation of the law, without a fishing license and on a ship that is not authorized to engage in fishing, thus harming the development of the fish population in the area, especially in light of the fact that the fishing is dwindling and it is a limited resource that the ministry is working in many ways to increase.

The story began with receiving a report about ships operating without a fishing license. Following the report, the inspectors of the Fisheries Division at the Ministry of Agriculture began monitoring and testing, and during the holiday the ship in question was caught off the coast of Tel Aviv. There were three fishermen on the ship, all of them operating without a license, as well as a lot of expensive equipment that allows, as mentioned, to catch a very large amount of fish. At this time of the year, tuna fish pass by off the coast of the State of Israel and the fishermen tried to catch them and sell them to the highest bidder. The inspectors of the Fisheries Division continue to carry out surveillance operations to locate additional fishing vessels.

The three captured fishermen, residents of the central region in their 50s, were taken for questioning under a warning and the ship and all the equipment on it were seized by the inspectors and will be used for the continuation of the investigation and as legal exhibits. Among the seized items was innovative and expensive fishing equipment. The fishermen confessed to the act already during the investigation and now the continuation of their treatment has been transferred to the legal office of the Ministry of Agriculture.

If it is decided to file charges against the fishermen, the maximum penalty for offenses of this type, for a person with no criminal record, is three months in prison.

Haim Anjuni, Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division at the Ministry of Agriculture: "The Fisheries Division has set itself the goal of eradicating the phenomena of illegal fishing and within this framework enforcement actions are carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with other enforcement agencies. "During the last two months alone, the fisheries department caught over 25 fishermen and over 30 fishing nets in the area where fishing is prohibited during this period in the Kinneret."

By the middle of the century there will be no fish in the sea

  1. I am a member of a fishing family and all my life our livelihood is from fishing with standing nets that whistle in the depths and yes it is true that the biggest damage to us is the cruel trawl fishing should be canceled immediately

  2. There is an attitude that says that a nature reserve should be made of 40% of the surface of the seas in general. Something that will lead to the restoration of the animal population in the reserve and an overflow of fish to the reserve so that in the end there will be enough fish for everyone. The situation today is that in the past, about 10% of what was in the past remained in debt.
Just reducing the fishing fleet will not solve the problem because each ship will take out more fish and there will be no change in the situation at all.

  3. The main problem of the fisheries division is not the people involved in supervision, but pay attention to the head of which is Anjuni Haim, whose connection to the world of the sea is only accidental and the problems of the fishermen is the last thing that interests him, if at all.
As long as he is at the head of this system there is no chance that the situation will change.
What's worse is that Mr. Anjuni is supported by the management of the Ministry of Agriculture (CEO, deputy directors of various kinds, and also the minister) for the reason that none of the senior officials want noise and ringing and to admit the mistake of appointing one such as a division manager in a government office. The problems of fishing are, as already said, also in the Sea of Galilee and in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

  4. Fishermen who use "arrays of floating rods spread over thousands of meters" - are not amateurs, but bandits, whose hands should be removed and ... other selected parts.
Even amateurs of all kinds, who drag more than three sticks - are clearly breaking the law.
True, Rafi, the trolls do most of the damage. So, in your opinion, this gives legitimacy to all kinds of yachtsmen, to do what's on their minds at sea?

  5. Read and laugh!!!! laugh and actually cry...
The impotents of the Fisheries Division and the Ministry of Agriculture are boasting about catching some amateur boat,
But if we talk about facts:
The tremendous damage is caused by trawlers who fish in seasons when fishing is prohibited, with nets
With an eye size smaller than allowed, and especially in areas where they are not allowed to fish in terms of proximity to the shore - and worse than that too
In nature reserves!!!!! But since it is a "difficult" population and not three amateurs or some teenager who dives with a rifle, such a trawler receives a ridiculous fine of 10% of the value of the captured booty (aimed at a specific case off the Bonim coast), continues on its way with the fish they caught (unbelievable but true !!!) and of course they don't dare to confiscate the fishing equipment.
There are Jerf fishermen - the long coffee net that is thrown from the beach and sweeps up thousands of minnows that are thrown to die on the beach (see and cry...), this happens every evening on the beaches of the Kiryat, fishermen without a license and without God, but the inspectors of the fisheries department for some reason do not get there... (Remember, These are not three amateurs but difficult people...).
So apart from brain confusion and bragging about nothing, it is clear that the impotence as far as enforcement is concerned will continue-
At least as long as there is no Viagra against impotence - and the ecological holocaust will come...
And if anything, how is it that the clowns there in the Ministry of Agriculture have not heard of the Abu Nafha fish (for traveling gardening)
They invaded here, for two years they have been carnivoring and thinning the local fish at a rate while the culture is crazy?!
If they do not invest in eradicating the takeover of this species on our shores, this will be the final stamp for the arrival of the ecological holocaust on our shores...

  6. Nonsense!
Those who harm the fish are not the yacht fishermen,
It's the trawlers who spread nets.
The fish pass every year in fixed routes that are known to many fishermen,
The trawlers spread a net kilometers across and empty it.

  7. Very well finally someone up there woke up!!!
The boat fishermen drag all the fish, even the small fry, and do not allow continued reproduction and growth
    The generations of the fish.
In every reformed country there are restrictions on boat fishing and there is even a spawning period during which fishing is prohibited at all!!!

I wish they would enforce it properly!!!
