A medicine against cancer from a rare tree

"These compounds have an extremely complex structure, a fact that makes it difficult to synthesize them using normal methods," says the lead researcher. "Not only did we succeed in synthesizing these compounds, but we found a more efficient method for their preparation as well as for the synthesis of a wide variety of other complex compounds." say the researchers

Researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) have developed a new and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of compounds found in the Medang tree that grows in East Asia. These compounds, known as kingianins, hold promise as a cure for cancer, but researchers have encountered a complex challenge in light of the very small amount that can be extracted from this tree.

"These compounds have an extremely complex structure, a fact that makes it difficult to synthesize them using normal methods," says the lead researcher. "Not only did we succeed in synthesizing these compounds, but we found a more efficient method for their preparation as well as for the synthesis of a wide variety of other complex compounds."

The team of scientists used the idea of biomimicry in order to imitate the chemical processes that take place in the tree itself for the synthesis of the compounds while using fewer materials, less energy and while saving time, and while creating less chemical waste than with previous methods. "The compounds we synthesized in the laboratory are the same as those produced in wood, and once we optimize the method it can be easily used to prepare similar compounds and in a more efficient manner," explains one of the researchers.

"Our work proves that methods such as biomimicry can solve problems of limited supply of materials required for medical research to transform them into complex compounds while reducing the environmental fingerprint at the same time," said the lead researcher. The researchers were surprised to discover that during the biosynthesis of these substances in the tree, free radicals were used, which are seen by the public as only harmful substances.

The research was published in the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie.

  1. Jure
And what exactly is the connection? Can you explain to us?
In your opinion, because there is a picture there, then it is related?

Asaf wrote about the cinnamon tree.

Asi asked him what the connection was between his explanation of the cinnamon tree and the article itself, which refers not to the cinnamon tree but to its specific properties and compounds that help in the fight against cancer, and how the researchers learned to use them in order to optimize the process. (my interpretation of his question).

And how do you even know that "the picture is misleading"????

It seems to me that you're just lashing out because someone asked a logical question that doesn't match your twisted logic.

What do you care that he answered the question?

You have nothing to say about the article - keep your stupid opinions to yourself.

I hope you are not offended by the harsh and aggressive language.

  2. Esi, it's related - because they showed a picture in the article, and the picture is misleading as he claimed.

Why when someone says something true and relevant do you ask them how it is relevant?
If you are trying to make a positive impression on the comment readers by criticizing one of the commenters who just wanted to help?

  3. collect,
And how is it relevant to the content of the article?
Is the text of your message supposed to create a positive impression on the readers of the article due to the fact that you are knowledgeable in analyzing images related to trees?

    Best regards,
    Assi

  4. The picture is misleading because it is a close-up photograph of a leaf whose natural size is about 5 cm,
The name Medang is a local vernacular name of a tree that is known all over the world
C: the cinnamon tree Cinnamomum parthenoxylon (which is not rare at all)
or by its "folk" name in English - Saffrol Laurel,
In the places where the tree grows in nature, many uses of the different parts of the tree are known
mainly as traditional medicines and spices,
Following the trade relations between Europe and the (Far) East, the wood was imported to the islands in the Indian Ocean
and grown in plantations to extract the cinnamon spice from the bark of the trunk.
