Work in a noisy workplace? The damage is not only in hearing, but also in sleep

Hearing damage caused by working in a noisy environment impairs the quality of sleep. This is according to a study conducted at Ben-Gurion University in the Negev. The research was carried out by Tsefnat Test, a medical student at the Faculty of Health Sciences as part of her studies for a doctorate in medicine, under the guidance of Dr. Einat Sheiner, Dr. Ayala Knafi, Dr. Arnona Eyal and Prof. Ilana Shoham-Verdi.
The study, which was recently published in the American magazine SLEEP, was conducted among employees exposed to prolonged noise at their workplace and compared the quality of sleep between two groups, one with hearing loss and the other without significant hearing loss. It was found that employees who suffer from hearing loss due to prolonged exposure to noise in their workplace tend to suffer from a decrease in sleep quality.
Workers who lost their hearing were on average older and were exposed to noise for a longer time than those who did not lose their hearing. In addition, 51% of the workers in the group that suffered hearing loss reported tinnitus (ringing in the ears), compared to only 14% of the group whose hearing was not damaged. Tinnitus is a well-known cause of decreased sleep quality, but the results of the study show that a decrease in hearing after prolonged occupational exposure to harmful noise significantly increased the phenomenon called "insomnia", independent of the effect of tinnitus and without differences in age or duration of exposure to noise.
"Our study population is homogeneous with exposure to high levels of harmful noise in the workplace, which allowed us to compare the quality of sleep between similar groups when the only difference between them is the hearing status," says Test.
The study was carried out among 298 male volunteers who were exposed as part of their work to harmful noise. As part of the study, the workers underwent a hearing test, where 99 of the participants were found to have hearing loss, while the rest were found to have normal hearing. The researchers examined a large number of elements of sleep, including difficulties in falling asleep, early awakening or awakenings during the night, sleepiness or falling asleep during the day, snoring, and excessive movement during sleep.

  1. The noise causes hearing damage and hearing loss.
The "ringing in the ears" are in most cases (not all)
Physiological response to the reduction in hearing,
And not a direct response to the noise.
Ringing in the ears is annoying, and can be disturbing
    fall asleep, and cause sleeplessness.

  2. Since the doctoral student is only interested in the medical issue, I'm sure she didn't bother to check (and shouldn't have checked), how much the employers save on quality headphones, she didn't check in how many workplaces the employee is employed in noisy conditions for over 60 hours a week and, of course, against the law, in how few places the employees have This is a quiet and clean dining room or rest room, and how difficult it is for some of these workers to work day and night for a week, then they completely lose their natural day and night routine.
And the doctoral student did not check, nor should she have checked, how many of these workers are at the bottom of the wage scale in Israel, and therefore cannot enjoy the fruits of their hard work either.

  3. The presentation here of the doctoral student's research is very superficial and seems to do the research an injustice. Rather, it seems that the causes of sleeplessness are not the decrease in hearing but the stress of working in a noisy workplace and working in an annoying workplace, so it is impossible to fall asleep at night because of too many nerves.
