Technion researchers managed to put the entire Bible on the head of a pin

The Technion researchers were able to upload a complete and dotted version of the Hebrew Bible on an area of 0.5 square millimeters - less than the area of a pinhead.

The Nano Bible was written as part of an educational program developed at the Russell Berry Nanotechnology Institute, a program that aims to increase young people's interest in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The head of the Nanotechnology Institute, Prof. Uri Sivan, came up with the idea of writing the entire Bible on an area as small as the head of a pin. The project was managed by Ohad Zohar, the scientific advisor of the Institute for Educational Programs in the Nano Field and a doctoral student in physics, together with Dr. Alex Lahav, former head of the FIB laboratory at the Wolfson Center for Microelectronics.

The nanobible was written using a scientific device called a FIB - Focused Ion Beam. With this device it is possible to launch a focused beam of tiny particles (gallium ions) towards a given object. When the particles hit the bone, they spray atoms from it and thus incise it. This is similar to digging a hole in the ground using a water jet from an irrigation hose.

The nano-Bible was written on a silicon surface coated with a thin layer of gold (thickness 20 nanometers). "When we launch the beam of particles towards a point on the surface, the gold atoms are splashed from that point, thus exposing the silicon substrate underneath. The diameter of the exposed spot is about 40 nm. When we look at the written sample using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the spot of exposed silicon appears darker than the surrounding gold. By sending the particle beam towards different points on the surface of the substrate, we can engrave some pattern of dots, and in particular a pattern representing text", explains Ohad Zohar.

The template of the nano-bible was built by special software developed as part of the project, which allows any text to be engraved on the surface of the substrate.

The nano-Bible project is part of an educational program that asks the following question: "How small can the Bible be"? The program uses this intriguing question to explore modern methods for creating tiny patterns and imaging at the nanometer scale, to present advanced technologies for high-density information storage, and to discuss futuristic issues such as information storage in DNA molecules or other biomolecules.

"The fact that the Bible contains a lot of information (about 10 million bits) is central. "We know many ideas for high-density information storage, but almost always the attempt to apply these ideas to a large amount of information reveals new challenges and ultimately leads to a deeper understanding of the proposed method and its limitations," say the Technion researchers.

"The nano-bible project came to illustrate the miniaturization capabilities we have. We are currently working on photographing the nano-bible using a scanning electron microscope, with the aim of enlarging the image 10,000 times and displaying it on a huge wall in the Faculty of Physics at the Technion. In this picture, whose size will be 7 meters by 7 meters, it will be possible to read the entire Bible with the naked eye (the height of each letter will be about 3 millimeters). Next to this picture will be placed the original - the nano-Bible itself - which is the size of a grain of sugar", says Ohad Zohar.

  1. I am a Bible teacher and I have a question for the Technion researchers:
In the event that I give the students an exam with closed material (without Bible books), should I forbid the students
Getting to the exam with pins that have heads? (so they don't copy!)

  2. The Tanakh and the Koran are together 2 big mistakes
Together with the New Testament, Taoism
And most importantly - religious intolerance!

Stop fighting over who has a more equal imaginary friend

  3. All the best in regards to compressing information of any kind:

But on an equally important part, there is almost no basic information, such as: the communication system with the information found on the head of the pin (a certain verse, a certain number in the Bible), and of course also how the source of the information is connected to some kind of monitor (imaging on the nanometer scale, and from it)?

  4. Is it possible with the nano technology to put all the Arabs on the same head? Willing to compromise on two as well

  5. My body, please do not insult the Koran, it is a holy book and it does not contain mistakes like we have in the Bible, you know that it has only one and only copy because it is preserved by God. You know that Islam came to complete Judaism and Christianity, that is, it recognizes us and Christians, we are always dirty without understanding
The real Islam was in the past and little by little Islamic countries are really practicing before the real custom of Islam
    I wish we understood

  6. Is this related in some way to the development of a MEMORY USB STICK in Nano?
Last year the Nano 250 gigabyte was released - I currently have 64 gigabytes of Nano technology

    - The nano has entered chip development in the last four years

  7. my son -
God is already in the head of a pin and also in the atoms that make up the pin.
Is there a place where God is not found?
What exactly were you trying to say?

  8. From the article I understood that there is still no available and cheap readability of the written text, so when it becomes available it will be possible to write all the encyclopedias of all kinds on something like a sergeant!! Maybe even all the information that exists in the world today in something of a dwarf size!
It's a shame that you can't cram whole populations on the head of a pin.. it would solve many problems of energy, transportation, food, sewage and more!!

  9. It was shown yesterday (17/12/07) as part of the first channel in the program "Who's Afraid of Us" (as I imagine in the program "Matt Shani") and is indeed very impressive.

  10. Only in Israel alone there are more than a million pin heads containing the Bible
