A multipurpose chimney that generates electricity and prevents earthquake damage

This is one of the projects presented at the "Green Environment" conference at the Ariel Design and Technology Center in Samaria. In addition to this unique project, about 50 green projects of the students in various engineering and design departments were presented at the conference exhibition.

The outstanding project - literally - presented at the project exhibition of the "Green Environment" conference at the Ariel Design and Technology Center in Samaria (for an engineering degree) on May 11, 2010, was a multi-purpose chimney developed by four students from the civil engineering department: Anton Soshon and his friends - Kirill Ellenberg, Elder Gasanov and Igor Turkovitsky.

The chimney is actually the 'core' of the building, and serves as the main supporting column. In addition to its ability to ventilate the space of its base, it will also generate electricity through a turbine located at its top and drawing cold air from below. It will also prevent collapse damage during an earthquake. According to the planners, when the chimney rises to at least 50 meters, it will be possible to provide electricity for all the needs of the supported structure, since the higher the chimney, the more electricity can be generated through the wind blowing outside it. The developers of the multi system chimney are even checking the possibility of registering their invention as a patent.

In addition to this unique project, about 50 'green' projects of the students in the various engineering and design departments were presented at the conference exhibition.

The Minister of Environment Gilad Erdan participated in the conference. An interview was broadcast with the minister of the TMT Binyamin (Foad) Ben Eliezer. The conference was opened by the CEO of Africa Israel Industries Avraham Novogrotsky, who awarded scholarships to selected students.

Ministry of Communications spokesman Dr. Yehiel Shabi moderated a panel on "Public awareness of a green environment" with the participation of actress Sarit Vino-Elad, CEO of "Haredim for the Environment" Yehuda Ganot, CEO of "Green Trend" Gil Yaakov, Libby Baikin Co-CEO Point of view-pr and CEO L.N. The green technological greenhouse Clara Oren.

Dr. Yochaved Panhassi-Adiv, director of the Center for Design and Technology, summarizes the welcome activity on the subject: "Every year we choose a topic, and deepen the learning in it not only face-to-face in the classrooms, but also experientially, while meeting with the field. Before my eyes I see the enthusiasm for creation and learning of our students, because they feel the area better this way, they understand that the in-depth learning will benefit them when the time comes when they will be professionals who will face the challenges that will be placed before them in their day-to-day work. 1. And again I will try to explain myself. The fact that the article was published by the public relations department is well known. The person who gave them the picture and the details about the project was not involved in the execution of the model and even bypassed the students in publishing the project. And secondly, my response was not directed at you, but at language geniuses who write down things that have no connection to reality. Now to correct the mistake in my previous response, a patent application was indeed submitted even before it was presented at the exhibition. And thanks again Michael for the correction

  2. Tzachi Ram:
It doesn't seem to me that you arranged something in someone's mind.
First of all - you should know that this is a publication of the public relations department - the marketing and advertising division of (see this is a miracle) the Ariel University Center in Samaria, so there is no connection between your claim that there is no connection and the reality.
Besides - it turns out that you are not familiar with the patent registration procedure. This is a process that takes a very long time measured in years and usually takes more than two to three years. I have no doubt that a patent was not registered and at most an application for patent registration was submitted. It is even more likely that for reasons of saving money - only Provisional was submitted at all, as I mentioned in response 9.
By the way - like all the advertising - the phrase "we are checking the possibility of registering your invention as a patent" is not an invention of the science site but an exact quote from the announcement of the Ariel University Center.
What appears in the picture is - see it's a miracle - the picture sent to the science site by....the Ariel University Center.

  3. I'll put a few things in order for you in your head - first of all, the Ariel University Center in Samaria is a different center from the one these girls study in, if you learn to read before you open your mouth, then you will see that there is no connection between a university center and the Ariel Design and Technology Center. The Technology Center is an engineering school coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Culture and known everywhere that does an excellent job with the students and the level of studies there is several levels higher than what exists in Israel. Second thing about patents - the article is not accurate because a patent was registered for the chimney even before it was presented at the conference in collaboration with the Center for Design and Technology. These days the Orba is on display at the BUILDING2010 exhibition and anyone interested in seeing it is invited. What appears in the picture is only the initial stage of the entire model, the principle of operation is to use the wind at height and use the existing pressure differences, what is missing in the picture is the upper part of the model and it is the rotor itself and again you can access and see the model until July 24th at the pavilion 10 exhibition grounds. These companies did an excellent job and invested a lot of time in the project, so show some respect.

  4. The idea is Prof. Zaslavsky's and he has written many articles about it. So contact him before you violate rights.
    These are the famous chimneys.

  5. To make things right:
The term "university center" is an invention of Ariel College, and is not recognized by any body in the State of Israel or in the world. Ariel College conceived it as part of its efforts to become a university and establish facts on the ground, while undermining the Council for Higher Education in Jerusalem, which is the body with the authority to decide on such matters in the State of Israel. As part of the effort, a "competing" body was established called the Yosh College, which includes... that's right, you guessed it: only Ariel College. A joke, did we say that? They are not a university but a college, and are budgeted by the state accordingly, as a college. For more details, read Wikipedia.

It is appropriate not to lend a hand to the nonsense of a body that tries to subvert the MLA. This is a serious science site - next time please be precise and call the institution by name, "Ariel College". It may sound like a small detail, but it's annoying that everyone thinks they can do whatever they want in the country without accounting to anyone, and other people still accept it and cooperate with it. Thank you and greetings.

  6. Ron:
I tend to believe that they submitted first - at least Provisional and that this is the meaning of the word "checkers"

  7. There is no patent here... not because it won't work or because it's not original (which is possible) but because it was presented in a timely manner...

The presentation of the idea at the exhibition (and the publication of the subject in an article on the Internet) constitute prior publication, so if they did not submit the application for a patent beforehand, it will not be accepted and will not stand up in court.

  8. Michael,
Still, I'm quite skeptical about the amount of energy such a device could produce.

  9. This means that the air will be sucked in by itself due to an operation Bernoulli's law When the wind blows above.

In fact - it could have been perfected so that it would take advantage of any pressure difference - even one that pumps downward in the event that the air pressure below is lower and the air flows in the opposite direction, but it seems to me that they did not do this and probably rightly so because these situations are rare.

  10. Its principle of operation is not really clear.
In a chimney of the "Australian tower" type, the air is heated at the bottom of the chimney and then it rises because it is hot.
Here they "draw cold air from below", so it is not clear to me how electricity is generated from it.
Even considering the volumes required of the other chimneys mentioned here in order for them to be efficient, and considering their height-efficiency graph, it is not clear to me exactly what principle they are proposing here.

  11. 2 significant differences: in most chimneys the direction of the air flow is opposite and it is also necessary to inject water into the upper part (oh and also a height of about a kilometer and an area of a football field...)
