Embarrassed teacher to the new "Hidan" site

Welcome to the renewed science site. This time we are renewing with the help of the open source movement and with the help of Rami Yoshchev who designed the site in its current version

Orientation on the new site

The new website is able, at least in terms of tools, to provide the advanced features of WEB 2.0. For example, it is possible to create new experts in a simple way and classify an article into several topics. Also, all along the way, even if it is about topics with a hierarchy of 3 and 4 levels, it is possible on every page of a topic to see all the latest news of all the sub-topics according to the dates. This is done automatically, and so for example those interested in science in Israel can simultaneously view articles from all sub-sections, such as the crisis in higher education, as well as news on "biotechnology in Israel".

However, we were unable to carry out an orderly transfer of the database from the old site, but the decision is to keep it open as long as it is required, also due to the many external links, and so that it will be used as an archive for over 7,000 articles and news items.

Search for articles on the old site

Therefore, in order to reach the archive of a certain subject there are two options from the list on the right: there is an option to reach the home page of the old site (the archive of the old site) and from there navigate using the main navigation bar. Another option is to use the Google search engine - also in the list on the right, configured so that it searches among the results on the science site. Naturally, at least in the first step, this search will lead to results on the old site.

For any question or problem you are welcome to contact me

After four years we are changing our platform and thank the AAI company that develops the BuildaGate system headed by Shushi and Petah Cohen, for the help during these years.

  1. I congratulate the site on the innovations. Hope they make browsing easier.
I also hope that the referral mechanism for articles to emails {"Send an article"} will start working, which was not successful in the previous system.

    Congratulations on the new format
It is very convenient to read the comments in sequence without having to click on them

Site looks nice. There is a bit to improve in the design. But in general the transition is good.

    What about RSS?

  4. To my dear father!
Good luck with the new/old site

  5. oops
Your comment didn't go in because it was the first comment that arrived and I haven't gotten used to the system yet and accidentally clicked on delete. The reason for the approvals is that the previous site had a lot of comments that sold all kinds of things like SMS pyramids and sex sites. So it didn't bother me because they only saw the title and only those who entered encountered the advertisement until I saw it and flew away, this time you see it prominently.
The gray crosses of the comment box and the shift to the right, the subject in the care of the designer, not everything is under his control. We took care of the rest, see for example the titles of the frames on the right. And as for the headlines versus the summary of the article, you will collide here with another writer who strongly demanded it, claiming that this is how I make it easier for the readers to decide where to enter. What to do, you can never satisfy everyone. Maybe we'll start a discussion on Wikipedia and take a vote and see what the majority decides...

  6. Haha.. I remembered another thing about the sixth pack: it is not possible to respond to other people's comments as it was on the new site, sorry, my mistake.

  7. I'm the anonymous commenter who left a comment saying the site has returned to the Stone Age.
Of course, my initial response doesn't appear because someone decided not to confirm it (this is the first puck)
filter messages even though it is not necessary.
Must, must, website? , I don't really understand their meaning, perhaps to make it difficult for the commenters (this is a second puck) lack of awareness for the commenter.
The third feature is the omission of the letters from the right side when writing the response.
The fourth feature is the general grayness (lacking color), really not pleasing to the eyes.
The fifth puck as one with ADD disorder as you find it hard to follow topics and I would have preferred just titles on the main page and not smearing part of the article. The size, as you know, does not matter 🙂
I believe there are more patches but this is enough as a boot.

  8. Regarding the administration and the menus compared to the advertising

The difference is quite clear, all the administration is on the right side and all the advertising (or alternatively - banners in exchange for materials) is on the left side, as well as the advertising area at the top of the page to the left of the logo. and at the bottom of it. On the contrary, the previous site had a mix of advertising and administration on both sides - left and right and above. Now there is no such guarantee. The entire administration is on the right and everything else is other things.
By the way, the Google box on the right is primarily intended for searching the old site. It is true that you can search the entire network from there, but I define it as a service and not as advertising.

  9. Regarding the conversion
I don't have enough knowledge in databases and writing such scripts. I would love to get help. I asked for help from professionals but for some reason it is difficult to find MYSQL experts among them, if it was an Oracle or Microsoft database it might be easier.
There are all kinds of parameters on the new site whose equivalent on the old site was part of the text and vice versa, so the script should take this into account.
Thanks for all the comments, both positive and critical. And a comment about the fact that the site has been live for less than a week - well, it's less than half a day. As of midnight yesterday and Google News still doesn't recognize it, so I had to update the old site because of it as well.

  10. Response to Guy, we are looking into the matter. The transfer of the "archive" from the old site is done manually at this stage because of the complicated system that was there (it should remain a long process, and it was taken into account when the decisions were made to switch the system).

Regarding the website design, everything can be changed! We put more emphasis on changes to the system and the location of the various contents. Now that we have finished this step, it is possible to play if the colors are according to the surfers' comments.

As a reminder, the new site went up a few hours ago, give us a few days and the site will be adapted to all your requirements. And the more you respond, the more we will know what to improve and change.

  11. Congratulations!
Indeed a refreshing improvement and open source guarantees that there will be support if we want to move the database in the future or upgrade.
There may be a way to migrate the articles from the old site in some way... I suggest you check! Maybe even writing a script to convey it would be extremely simple!

    The RSS looks better already!

  12. Okay, what comes to mind now at first glance and annoys me is that despite the new design, the concept is still the same from the previous version: for example that of hidden titles one after the other

If there was a brief description of the content of the article after each title, the site would be much more enjoyable and flowing

I usually go to this site looking for an interesting title, which is a waste of time
If it was structured so that I get a little more information about each article, I would wait longer, save time, and know better what to focus on

You need to insert the bolded introduction of each article to appear together with the title in the list of articles

    For example like here:
    http://news.walla.co.il/?w=/3850

I would also make a separation of colors between the areas of the articles and the menus, at the moment it is not clear where the administration and menus of the site are, where the content is and where the advertisements are

Something on the site doesn't work for me either in terms of design or concept...
Father, first of all, congratulations on the new site, there is no doubt that it looks much better and more innovative compared to the old site, and it also seems that the pages are finally loading much faster, on the old site it takes an hour for the article to load, which is really annoying!

but…. You have some very important comments regarding the design and I highly recommend changing it as soon as possible -

    1. The choice of colors for the yellow titles on the right side ("Knowledgers", "Writers", "Content Partners") is simply bad, you don't see anything until you highlight the text in blue with the mouse! The titles are painted yellow but they are written on a light gray background... Maybe on old screens it looks better, but I'm looking through an excellent LG flat screen and you have to really, really really try to see what's written there, so please please choose colors with a little contrast Stronger, how does the website designer not pay attention to such details, what is he blind??

    2. The same goes for the colors of the comment box, the box has a rather dark gray background (light-dark), while the text you write in the box is also quite gray, a little more emphasized, it really irritates the eyes, it's hard to read! There is no contrast between the background of the box and the color of the text, it's crazy for the eyes! What's wrong with a box with a white background (or subtle light yellow) and black or blue text? There is nothing better than that!

    3. Again, the comment box, there is a bug, I surf through Internet Explorer, and for some reason the first 3-4 letters I write in the box are swallowed up on the right side and I don't see them, only when I type the fourth or fifth letter does it suddenly appear close to the right side of the box , please fix this bug!

But overall as a start the site looks much better and pleasing to the eye compared to the previous site.

    Successfully!

  13. Well done!! Great site! Looks much more aesthetic and advanced!
Keep up all your articles! Great news site! To the appropriate readers 🙂

  14. Avi,
Mazel Tov! As a devout reader I was happy to see that the site is being upgraded, and is 'alive and kicking'!
The site is lovely - true, there are still some childhood illnesses, but I'm sure everything will be resolved soon.
I was saddened to see that even before the site celebrated a week of its birth, all the "scholars" were incredibly quick to build their theory about how a site should be built "properly" and rushed to blatantly point out every flaw with an angry demand for its immediate correction! (After all, they are Israelis, they "deserve" a much better site!!!).
Don't let comments like this put you off (I guess you've anticipated these too…). We all greatly appreciate the long-term effort to create a website that does not aim low and consistently deals with interesting topics from the front of science and technology - and for free. Well done!

  15. Why doesn't my previous comment appear here? what is going on here

  17.  To the anonymous who left a comment, according to which the site returned to the Stone Age.

In what respect exactly did he go back in time?

If it is meant that the database has not been transferred, there is no problem because you can reach every article through the Google search or by entering the old website
