"Today there is a severe global shortage of engineers and programmers and Israel can export people with this knowledge in the form of start-up companies," said Google Israel CEO Meir Brand as part of the Hafis forum for academia and technology held yesterday in Haifa in collaboration with the Technion and the University of Haifa.

"The sources of information are much more significant and accessible than in the past, so it is very important that today's students know how to use the tools that are given to them. The role of a teacher or lecturer is no less important than it was in the past, therefore it is no less important that the teachers also know how to teach how to use the same tools. Technology is what brings people to the next step in their lives," says Brand.

"Personally, I believe that people should choose the subject of study that they are most curious about and that they like the most," Brand added, "but I can tell you that there are subjects in which there is a huge gap between supply and demand. Thus, today there is a severe global shortage of engineers and programmers, and Israel can export people specifically in this field. It is true that every person should be busy with the things he likes the most because it is likely that he is the best at them and in the end whoever is the best in his field will eventually find a job. We also have people from different fields working for us, we are looking for the best in every field"

The Chairman of the Lottery, Colonel (res.) Uzi Dayan announced that starting from the next academic year, the Lottery will add to the socio-economic considerations in the distribution of scholarships to students, a new consideration - learning a required profession that also has a great chance of finding a job in it after graduation. The subjects are: computer science, civil engineering science subjects, mechanical engineering, exact science subjects, general medicine, electrical engineering, electronics and computers, and psychology. In the last 11 years, the lottery company has given donations totaling 350 million shekels which were divided among 13,500 students.

  1. Dan you are right. At the Technion, the average is 75 and I see applicants from colleges and universities with an average of 95 competing for a doctorate and the grade sometimes wins.
The sentence of the CEO of Google was said not long ago by the Zisafel brothers and today they are firing 150 employees from their high tech company.

  2. Not really. After all, the engineers that Brand wants are graduates of Technion, Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion or Hebrew with an average of 90+ (the kind of people who get hired at Google).
