Prof. Uri Zeligson, director of the Amalia Biron Institute for Blood Coagulation Research at the Sheba Medical Center and the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, was awarded the most prestigious award by the International Blood Coagulation Organization - The Robert Grant Medal. This decoration is awarded to one scientist every two years for achievements in research, teaching and the promotion of the profession.
At the opening of the organization's international congress held in Geneva, attended by 7,700 scientists and doctors from around the world, the decoration was awarded to Prof. Seligson.
The International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (The International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis) unites thousands of scientists and doctors from around the world who are engaged in research that causes the formation of blood clots in arteries and veins (thrombosis) which are the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in Western countries (myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolism, etc.) . Since the organization was established (1969), phenomenal progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms of blood coagulation, in the prevention and treatment of blood vessel blockages, in the diagnosis of conditions of hereditary tendency to hypercoagulability, and in the diagnosis and prevention of diseases with a hereditary or acquired tendency to bleed. Thanks to these studies, there are now preparations that dissolve blood clots or prevent their appearance, as well as effective preparations for the treatment of blood conditions.
The international organization holds a prestigious scientific congress once every two years where the results of the latest research are presented. Such a conference was held in 1995 in Jerusalem (whose president was Prof. Seligson) and at the beginning of July of this year it was held in Geneva where about 3,500 scientific papers were presented (among them 9 from Prof. Seligson's group). In addition, the international organization carries out extensive activities in the framework of scientific committees, educational activities around the world, and publishes a leading scientific journal.
