Contact with aliens in less than 20 years?

On the occasion of the opening of an array of radio telescopes dedicated entirely to the search for radio signals from aliens, the founder of the SETI Institute, Seth Shostak, predicts that the technology will enable the discovery of radio signals from intelligent civilizations within a radius of 500 light years from us by the year 2025

Allen telescopic array

Allen Telescope Array (ATA)that we reported on its establishment) began to operate in a configuration of 42 antennas. The project, led by the SETI Institute, is a non-governmental project funded by Bill Gates' co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, and will eventually include 350 small radio antennas that will scan the sky for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence. Allen was also the main financier of the spacecraft Spaceship-1 which won in 2004 the X-PRIZE competition, during which the spacecraft was launched twice for a suborbital flight.

To test the system, ATA monitored radio signals from the New Horizons spacecraft on its way to Pluto. A senior STE scientist, Seth Shostak, said at an event in San Francisco on Tuesday that the array will be made powerful enough by 2025, and it will be able to look deep into space and find signals from aliens. "We will find ET in two decades". said.

This is, of course, on the assumption that the distance to which we can observe in space will increase with the improvement and addition of devices that have not yet been built, and that computing power will continue to advance according to Moore's Law.

Shostak estimates that if the assessment of computing power and the power of future research instruments is correct, we will be able to search for life up to a distance of 500 light years in 2025, a distance that he estimates will be sufficient to find life according to Drake formula, which predicts the existence of ten thousand intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy, capable of radio transmission, and therefore at least one such must be within a radius of 500 light years from us. Time will tell us what will happen. Until then we can only guess what it will look like Evolution of intelligent life.

  1. exactly. Funny how the aliens are so sophisticated that they managed to get here, but didn't find a better way to communicate with us than crop circles, or photographing circles in the sky with phone cameras.

Like, it was possible to think that they would announce their presence by giant holograms in the sky, or by taking over our television screen. (And no, Big Brother is not a message from them)

    So one of the three:
    1. Despite their great intelligence. Even though they opened wormholes here or something similar, despite all that, they lack basic communication ability.
    2. They came here, but they don't want us to know about it. Still, they leave marks by parking precisely in crop circles, and flying low to the ground, so that anyone can photograph them. (Even though they have the technology to get here, they don't have the technology to hide it from us.) - In that case, my dear, they don't want to talk to you... so what do you want?
    3. These are simple explanations for the photographs. Or, it's charlatans/fantasists or just delusional types who create these "proofs". Have you never heard of someone claiming supernatural powers??? You call him a crook, don't you? So why do you think there are no crooks in the case of aliens?

  2. hook,
The title sounds like the light rail in Jerusalem until 2005, then 7, then 9, then of course 12.

  3. to a legal alien

Thousands of light years?, I immediately guessed that you were impersonating and at most you came from the clouds of Magellan!
Andromeda is two million light years away from us!
I just don't understand why an alien from our galaxy would seek to discredit it to the neighboring galaxies.
    Really unfriendly act!
    Good Day
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  4. Hello, I am an alien representing the great empire of what you call the "Andromeda Galaxy". I came to you specifically from a distance of thousands of light years to learn Hebrew, to investigate your strange customs and also sometimes to perform rectal examinations, because we in the Andromeda Galaxy are very interested in what you have down there.
But, after reading the responses to this article, and after watching TV (mainly on the Knesset channel), I came to the conclusion that there is no intelligent life on this planet, and therefore I recommended to my superiors to sever ties with humans and focus on dolphins instead, as the species with the highest potential for a fruitful relationship . I conveyed the message of course using crop circles in the fields and with the help of mysterious lights over Phoenix, Arizona.
Peace and thanks for the sardines.

  5. Do you want to be a member of an Israeli UFO research center?

Anyone interested in the field is welcome to join! – 0542379527

  6. By the way, Yanon, it is not clear to me what you were trying to say in response 66, but you are also welcome to try your hand and you know what? I allow you (something I'm sure you would have done anyway) also to mobilize all my acquaintances in the matter. Let's see how your whole company together deal with one problem!

  7. Yanon:
Who are the "we" and "you" you are talking about?
I have never received a divorce from a man without doing something for him that he wanted me to do and agreeing to pay for it.
The people of his "idleness and evasion", on the other hand, receive physical protection (of those serving in the army) and the satisfaction of all their needs in the desert for forty years (a yeshiva student gets paid for nothing!)

  8. Michael,
We all pay taxes, I think they are used more on your side and this has been proven in the past =]
And we stay with the tax money on earth and use it for natural needs only!

You, on the other hand, run off the planet with him and fly up at our expense.

  9. By the way, Pinocchio - let's see what your ability is in proving proofs and drawing conclusions:
Given N natural numbers between one and 1000 whose least common multiple of any two of them is greater than 1000.
How do you prove that the sum of the inverses of all N numbers (the inverse of X is one divided by X) is less than 1.5?

  10. Hugin:
This is not a mutation. This is a "Lamarkite" adaptation as a result of the change of environment due to the birth of some impostor who has desecrated my name.

  11. We were asked not to change the message in response 55.
I know why there's no reason to change it: it's already weird!
Beyond the strange content - was it really written in Hebrew? If not then the very translation is a change. If so - then why didn't whoever prepared it know to attach the text to the right? And where did you learn to write such a clumsy text, on the one hand, and inflated, on the other?
I am surprised that the reading is not accompanied by a dramatic melody that is usually attached to all the hallucinatory films of the heizarists.

  12. For Everything:
Indeed, not everything I don't understand is gibberish, but I actually understand your words and they are gibberish.

  13. Wow!!! Why don't you tell that you are leaving the Bermuda Triangle??? Tell the truth already.
And the mystery will finally come to light... the big one.

  14. Dear friends, and especially to those who oppose the studies
scientific. You should know that scientific research is not an insurance company. There is no certainty in the results that will be obtained. Scientific research is "risky" and despite that there are many very dear people who are willing to devote their lives and money to it and that's a good thing.
Regarding the search for foreign intelligences.
Very-very-very (I already wrote very?) It is possible that the said research will not reveal electromagnetic traces
Of them, however, to the same extent (very, very...) possible,
As has happened many times in the history of scientific research, because by the way, important (and important) findings and discoveries will be found in this research that are completely unexpected and unknown now. He who expects to know in advance what the results of scientific research that has not yet been carried out will be is not a scientist (in his soul) but a merchant (in his soul).

  15. To 51
How about passing by for a moment on the "Science and Nature" website.. there are some articles by Y.S. that you will probably have something to say about them..
Ai..I got a zabang on my leg...

  16. To Mr. Rosenberg:
Not everything you don't understand is "bullshit"

The universe has existed for many years and the DNA seed that was buried in the earth a year or so ago has evolved to the point where we live today.
Evolution does not stop in places you are not aware of.
At the point in time when we started to evolve, other civilizations in the galaxy continued to advance..

  17. Interdimensional beings exist on Earth and they do not need to get here either in 5 minutes or a thousand years. They are already here and have the ability to move between different dimensions on Earth.
Try to think what is the real way to reach the stars on other galaxies and you will see that the answer is not to send a manned vehicle into a 700 year orbit but to "simply" create some kind of interdimensional bouncer that will send the vehicle in an instant.
"They" have already discovered this and they also have the ability to "disappear" themselves from our range of sight by raising their frequency.
Seti have known about them for years but that doesn't mean they understand them and know what to do with it.

  18. I repeat that this whole discussion about what others should do (especially when it is led by people who almost none of them practice what they preach) is simply ridiculous.
They tried to address my claims and the orientation of the reference is quite transparent.
It was discussed that some things can be done very effectively when the methods that were proposed - some are ridiculous, some are illegal or immoral, and none of them have worked so far (because the goals were not achieved).
I don't intend to go into details on the matter because I don't think the discussion is serious.
I was told that there is nothing to refer to the threat of aggressive aliens because of the distance, when it is precisely the distance that makes the reference relevant.
If there are aliens who are able to reach the earth within 5 minutes and their goal is destructive - there is no way to prepare. If it takes them a thousand years, it makes sense. If you think about aliens, it could be that a thousand years is a really unproblematic period for them. Maybe they are immortal (in terms of natural death)? Maybe they live a lot? Maybe they know how to enter unlimited hibernation?
People in this discussion for some reason have a tendency to offer a lot of ideas that contradict scientific knowledge, but not a single idea that comes up with this knowledge is brought up here.
Regarding education as a means of eradicating religion - I think it is the right way and it is indeed moral.
It is not the individual's right to seize his baby and force him to become a zero like him, as the cool one expressed - this claim could also be applied to thieves and murderers.

  19. What does it matter whether SETI actually achieves the purpose for which it was established, it simply exists
    and will continue to exist.
    to the cool commenter,
Let's not be naive, the distribution of economic resources in the world we live in has nothing to do with the real scale of priorities, it never was and probably and subject to human nature it probably never will be.

I have a question for everyone:
In light of our knowledge of at least one advanced civilization in (our) space
, if we compare relatively the time that passed from the appearance of homospines to the beginning of civilization
and in the time that has passed from the beginning of civilization to our time when the destruction of the human species is already palpable,
Doesn't it make a lot more sense that if we ever discover aliens then either they will be in an unadvanced stage or if we really do receive some kind of message from a technological civilization, isn't it more likely that it was long extinct.

And I have another question that concerns a bit of philosophy:
From an evolutionary point of view, is it even possible for a certain species to survive and reach a technological culture without being violent and domineering? After all, according to what we know about humanity, a meeting between two advanced civilizations is likely to end in destruction or to work.
And all this without bringing a very tangible danger of biological destruction related to the immune system
(Please do not comment on whether such an encounter is a fantasy or not - although my personal opinion is
Yes, but I believe that one day we will receive the proof that we are not alone).

  20. It's not about making contact, it's about receiving transmissions!

Even if we find ET, it is possible that the transmissions that came from him are so far away that any SMS message sent back to him will take 500 years to arrive (at most, but still..).

As we know, many things happen quickly in advanced civilizations, so even if we send back a message, it is not certain that ET or even we will be on earth to receive the return message.

Instead of investing resources in searching for other lives, it is better that we invest in our own ones here on earth.
If we progress enough, eventually we will be the ET for other civilizations in the universe.

  21. To all those arguing about life

How long do you think it would take to settle a new Earth-like planet? According to the reproduction rate at which we are, on the order of one and a half percent or years per year, then every forty years the population will double, then the new planet will also be filled.
Conclusion: Like it or not, we are stuck here and must find a solution to life, above or below the ground or wherever on our globe.
Let's get to work, for the sake of our descendants.
    good evening
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  22. Michael, do you want a reference to the examples? you will receive
"I don't intend to prepare a "diploma" on the subject, but what do you think about the fact that we might just discover more life-supporting planets?
Can be? Of course it can! Will it help if there is? Surely it will help!”
There are many better and much more efficient methods of discovering life-supporting stars, and I'm not the one to tell you about them. Besides, the life you see from here is not the life you see from there, and it could be that aliens live at completely different temperatures and pressures and even without water.

"And what would happen if we received a message from alien type A saying that alien type B had started roaming the galaxy and destroying everyone it meets?"
That's exactly what I was referring to. It is simply not relevant when the aliens are more than a hundred light years away, and most likely (for reasons of dry calculations) that intelligent aliens are at a greater distance.

"And what if the very existence of aliens brings back some people on Earth with the question?"
There are more effective ways to do this, including extermination camps, supervision of a communist big brother, and outlawing religion (including synagogues, domes, siddurs, holy books, head coverings, skirts, etc.).
If you have to do it within the framework of democracy, then it is possible to finance investment in education for science and values, even though it is not the most democratic either, because it infringes on individual rights. That individual who wants his child to grow up to be a zero like him

  23. Uffff... what a shame.

If we rationally analyze the problematic here (well 'problematic' is a bit of an understatement in relation to what we have here). A journey into the vast expanses of the universe dwarfs any problem the human race has faced in the past. But why actually, what is actually the problem? It seems that the problem is mostly time, more precisely human life time. On the one hand, the limit of the speed of light and the vast distances make any trivial operation for hundreds and thousands of years and physical transportation for hundreds of thousands and millions of years. On the other hand, human life is 70-80 years, of which we are most effective in about 50 years.
Now let's go to the extreme case and assume that in the foreseeable future the earth will cease to be suitable for human habitation, does it make sense to go out into these spaces?, does it make sense to go for a project that will reap fruits for maybe a billion years?. In my opinion, the answer is very simple - if we have our backs against the wall, then of course it is.
So it won't be us who will see the 'new house', probably not our great-grandchildren either. Maybe at all it will just be some kind of electronic memory. Still, knowing the basic human urges, it seems to me that this is the decision that will be made. If only for the reason that someone will remember us and someone will tell our story.

  24. The cool:
Regarding the meetings - are you kidding me?
After all, I finance it with my own money!
Yeshiva students receive allowances from the state coffers, and the ones who fill them are me and my peers!
    How can you even compare!!!
Regarding fun - none of the examples I gave were based on this, although this is also important.
Regarding the speed of light: yes, I remember. Why question? You thought not? Did something in my words imply that I forgot?
By the way, you didn't address the concerns themselves at all.

  25. What is depressing in this whole story is that there are probably intelligent beings outside the earth but they will never be able to reach us because of the light speed limit. Unless they manage to develop a quantum teleportation method of a divided entangled state which is currently in the possession of science fiction but who knows...

  26. In short, you're saying that SETI should continue to be funded because it's fun.
DA in relation to "others" you can also say about the funding of synagogues and the culture of Bnei Brak, but you don't say that.
    Remember the speed of light??
Assuming the source of the signals is more than a hundred light years away, there is no longer any possibility of relevant communication, even if that alien species starts destroying the universe.

Discovering pattern signals is not an important thing!! Nothing can be gained from it

  27. The cool:
I don't know what got you.
Your expressions become aggressive for no reason.
I understand that you have already accepted the claim that you borrowed other people's money and time, so there is actually no reason to continue the debate.
I'm not going to make a "diploma" on the subject but how about we might just discover more life-supporting planets?
Can be? Of course it can! Will it help if there is? Surely it will help!
And what if we receive a message from alien type A saying that alien type B has started to roam the galaxy and destroy everyone it meets?
Can be? Can. can help? Can.
And what if the very existence of aliens brings back some people on Earth with the question?
Can be? Can. can help? Hell yeah!
So have a little. This is not a diploma and some of it has already been said before but maybe it will help you in some way.

  28. step by step!!
You don't fly people to Uranus before landing them on Mars.
Come on, come up with a detailed explanation of why SETI is important on a practical level, and see how I can cut through most of the details you bring up

  29. The cool:
I see you have already been answered.
I said others rightly because the funding comes from private sources.
Even if the funding came from sources of the United States government, it would - in your view - be about others.
And by the way: how many years of research are necessary - in your opinion - to arrive at a technology that will allow humanity to escape the fate that the sun is destined for?
When, in your opinion, would it be right to start dealing with the matter?
Couldn't SETI advance us significantly in this matter?
And what about the rest of the space exploration activity?

  30. What is certain is that those who are "progressive" will not define those who "do not understand their signals" as "retarded".
For a simple reason: the "developed" really understand the sanctity of the processes of all levels, and knew how to use every "level" (even "radio") as a real treasure - by virtue of being the available means of communication, which serves to achieve the goal. (Those who do not know how to appreciate seemingly "simple" things , did not know how to appreciate anything of importance next to their growth).
And what's the point of going so "far" when you don't see the importance of the precious value of the "near" so much... and whatever.

  31. I am surprised that in all the discussion here about whether the aliens still use the "backward" technology of the radio, the basic point is not raised: it is very possible that the aliens have already moved to a much more advanced technology, but it is likely that at least along the way they discovered the radio - and if so, they are smart enough to understand that Something that other cultures will look for - so they can use radio *intentionally*, in addition to all their other communication devices to send signals that "backward" cultures will still be able to hear.

They also ask what we will gain from discovering that there are aliens five hundred light years away. It is quite clear that the discovery itself, even though it is interesting, will not be of any use to us, nor will we probably be able to establish direct contact with them based on the discovery. However, especially if the aliens are actively trying to send information to "backward" civilizations, maybe we can learn something from them. Hoping for a detailed message specifically intended for us like in Carl Sagan's "Contact" is a little too much, but even a tenth of that would be a tremendous scientific discovery. What will happen, for example, if we receive (and succeed in deciphering) a message that contains physical and mathematical knowledge that we will only reach in another two hundred years?

  32. No nerves Kofiko, you don't want to be put to sleep, do you?

SETI is funded by Paul Allen of Microsoft. It may be you, but it's not the whole public, it's a private person who doesn't ask anyone how to spend their money. In one of his responses Michael brought up an interesting point that I think is hard to argue with: which research direction will bring results and what will be the depth of the change it will cause in our lives, this can only be known in retrospect and over the years (mostly decades and maybe hundreds of years). Look at electronics from 60 years ago and see how exotic and clunky it was and compare it to our lives today. Have you ever read about the market size forecast for computers in their infancy? Would you advise German scientists not to study atomic fission in the 30s because it doesn't make bread? That Einstein would not waste his time on the theory of relativity more than a hundred years ago?
Each study is preceded by a literature survey in which they actually check, among other things, that they are not going to reinvent the wheel.

Still... of course you are also right when you say that limited resources should always be distributed according to priority/importance. It's really unfortunate that sometimes it doesn't seem to happen: energy substitutes for fossil fuels, environmental conservation and preparations for the changes taking place on Earth, to me it's also strange that so much effort is invested in what will make people comfortable and almost nothing in what makes people happy. And another example... I heard on a TV program that in the Aed forests in Madagascar, about 1% of the variety of plants and animals have been studied so far, so we are running into space and here we don't know 99%!.

  33. First thing, stop telling others. Because the tax money and the computers of the common people are the ones who fund the nonsense and that's what angers. I didn't just say to research proteins, I said to research anything that can be seen that will somehow bring grain in the next 20 years (a discovery is a grain).
It's a shame to waste heaps of money on things that aren't really important. Let's say people detect a patterned transmission coming from part of the Andromeda galaxy, does that help anyone? It is impossible to prove that it is from living creatures and certainly it will not be possible to decipher it. There is a cultural gap too deep to decipher each other. And Michael, don't say that it will be possible to decipher because it's a complete sketch, why haven't the dogs, cats, dolphins and whales been deciphered yet?

  34. The cool:
I am surprised by your innocence.
Most people don't do anything that contributes to society.
Among the people who research - there are those who are interested in subject A and there are those who are interested in subject B.
You have no control over it and that's a good thing.
Not everyone wants to research proteins.
Some of the equipment used today in protein research is the result of developments in quantum theory research.
All human research is the result of curiosity for its own sake and almost every result of the research ultimately yields something useful.
It is enough to tell others what to invest their time and money in.

  35. Michael, I think SETI is selling illusions for precious resources, processing resources and money. Isn't it better to go for safer and more stable things like what I mentioned before?
"In analyzing the structure and bonds of proteins (which will help create biotechnological medicines and aids), or in genome research (which will bring tasty, durable and cheaper genetically modified food for the world's population) or in smart weapons and means of war. And anything that can be seen as a grain in the next 20 years ( And no, aliens millions of light years away from us really have no ability to influence us.) Of course, research into means to preserve nature, the environment, air quality and breaking the greenhouse effect are also desirable."
Instead of investing in something you have no way of knowing when you will get a return on it, if at all

  36. point:
The discovery of life on other stars will also disturb religion, but it will overcome it like all other contradictions thanks to the willingness of its believers to believe in contradictions.
Of course, creating life in the laboratory will also disturb her, as will the discovery of the fact that the rabbit does not produce rumen (wait... they already discovered that, didn't they?)

    Hanan Sabat:
You wrote "before they start throwing catapult stones at me" and it's good that you wrote like that and not something like "so that they don't throw catapult stones at me" because even the nice ending doesn't qualify the beginning of things as deserving of catapult stones being thrown at them.
Please tell me - how do you define science fiction and what of SETI's actions, in your opinion, belongs to this category.
To me, science fiction is exactly what you do when you go back and claim the existence of imaginary friends that are only revealed to people whose search is not their profession.

    All other aliens:
    You should grow up

  37. Hello cute Ofer,

Regarding your comment 24, are you kidding or are you a stupid kid?

"What the hell is cooler than a space battle?"... Where were you when they split their minds?

If God forbid that 'cool battle' your father was killed, you and your family would wake up every morning with a pillow wet with tears - what's cool about that?

There is no beauty in destruction and death, there is beauty only in creation and life. Stop believing all the stupid things you read online and start thinking with your head.

post Scriptum. - Do not believe those who offer you candy if you meet them in a dark place.

  38. Gilly, as for Shostak, his name is indeed a Jewish name. In any case, he is not a prophet but engages in technological forecasting, and an entire department at Tel Aviv University works on this, which receives substantial grants from technology companies and the European Union, so it is a legitimate activity.

I agree with you about Avi Greif and his videos. I didn't link but I try not to censor surfers except in exceptional cases.

  39. No no - Seth Shostak will also become a prophet in old age? No one told him yet who was given the prophecy after the destruction of the Second Temple? (The guy is Jewish, isn't he?)

As for Ebi Greif - I really would not take seriously (or in fact in any way whatsoever) any video and/or anything else on his website.

  40. After reading here in the morning I somehow got to Avi Greif's website, whose links have an interesting one that points to an American website that brings videos that clearly show that there were indeed and will be extraterrestrials here, the question at the moment is where do they come from??
Before that I was upset when I read in Maariv about a worldwide cover-up activity led by the USA and I was preparing to write a strong response...but the videos made me realize that despite everything the connection with extraterrestrials is only a matter of years!
In the process, the token fell to me regarding the existence of Seti and the purposes it serves.. This project is designed to distract from the phenomenon of aliens and present science as supposedly serious while scientists betrayed their vocation and cooperated with the authorities in a cover-up similar to a modern-day Inquisition!
The scientists who participated in the cover-up humiliated science and devalued it in the eyes of many people, perhaps because they were afraid of a situation where they would not have an explanation or it would turn out that the science here is still in its infancy! Of course, such a concern completely contradicts the scientific approach that claims to investigate phenomena and not to hide them when it is not convenient as the church, the enemy of science, did!
It is almost certain that the church also does not like the matter of advanced aliens and of course will cooperate with any factor that hides them, hence the government in the USA was motivated by religious fear and science by betrayal of itself!

  41. Live what we are,
First of all, you are wrong about the possibility of life in the universe and in our galaxy in particular, I am assuming that you know the enormous scale of the size of our galaxy and as such the enormous and unfathomable size of the known universe alone which includes hundreds of billions of galaxies, and we are ultimately talking about something There is no end at all...
For you to read the Drake equation to get a little more idea of what is going on, basically the theoretical conclusion is that there are several thousand communicating civilizations in the galaxy, some more advanced some less advanced. This theoretical conclusion has a much better chance of being true than your statement that all the suns in the universe are unstable because it is based on scientific research, you can go to some website that explains it (perhaps on Wikipedia) or the Hubble website or one of the world's science websites and see for yourself what you said very far from the truth.

Secondly, regarding the aliens that visit our world - the point is that the amount of evidence is so great that it is difficult not to draw conclusions, and from these conclusions it is quite clear that it has a huge impact on our lives in contrast to the lack of communication with the Syrians.
If an advanced culture that originates from a place very far away from here (very, very far) managed to reach us and make rondals in our sky, it is quite clear that it has a lot to teach us. It is quite clear that we have a huge interest in communicating with her.
To be honest, even the discovery of a very distant culture that we have no chance of communicating with you in our lifetime has enormous significance, because the very knowledge (at least the official one) that we are not alone has far-reaching aspects - both psychological and evolutionary.
    I will explain with questions:
What do you think is our role in this world? What is the meaning of life? What do you think is the next step? Why does everything happen and everything can also not happen? Where are we headed as a human species? How are we going to survive as a human species if we clearly know that Heaven will not allow us to live on it forever? What the hell is cooler than a battle in space?
Look at the aliens and see our future! Look at them and you will see the next stage, the stage where we join the game of the greats and take a giant step forward in our evolution. You never know if they know all the answers, but they know enough to make our lives completely different.
When you realize that it is possible to do everything they do, you actually realize that we humans also have the potential and the ability to one day be like them. If they do their best to help then this day will also be much closer.
I say if they can, then so can we!

  42. Hi Ofer,

I saw about the movies and read quite a bit... let's talk face to face.
For the purpose of the discussion let's examine the two possibilities: there are aliens and there are no aliens. First of all, regarding the level of discourse of the 'UFO siders', in my eyes it is a 'digging tick' style - well, admit that there is. Admit that you are hiding, admit that there might be... ok..., we lied, we hid, we admitted. What now?. So let's say aliens have arrived and are arriving on Earth but for some reason they don't want to communicate with us. So the Syrians don't want to talk to us either, but we don't kill ourselves and continue our routine.
SETI is positive in my eyes because it is another project that tries to learn and explore and collect information. But as a way to make contact with cultures at a distance of 500 SA?: "Hello, greetings from the Earth" (500 years have passed), "Excuse me, who is this?" (Another 500 years have passed) - doesn't sound serious. As if instead of Columbus' journey to America, the Spanish would have tried to communicate with the Indians in floating bottles. How much and what could have been learned this way about America?

But still, for at least 50 years we have already been listening to space and hear nothing. What if the reason we hear nothing is that there is nothing there?, that on every practical level we are alone? (This is not my theory, this is a "rare world" theory). In short, the theory claims that life at the level of bacteria is likely to be found elsewhere. But the formation of complex life such as man is extremely rare and is the result of an extremely rare coincidence that happened on Earth. Just for example is the stable activity of our sun: five billion years of extremely stable energy emission. Most of the observed suns show unstable behavior within a few years!.

So if we really live in a "rare world" and aliens will not save us from ourselves. So shouldn't we drive a little more maturely and responsibly on Earth?

  43. Haim, stop talking nonsense, watch a movie, read some material on the subject and then we'll talk at eye level. If after seeing and reading you are still skeptical, then what you say can be taken seriously, but just mocking is just stupid, in the end I think on a human scale and you should also think like that, if something really crazy is happening around us then it should interest you no less than that I'm interested. Treat it scientifically, check the information before you dismiss.

  44. Gentlemen, what are you talking about, aliens exist and exist among us all the time, just look around on the street, at work, in the government and anywhere else. They have been here for a long time!

  45. What happened to you, Ofer from 10, the younger brother from 6 already proved in a way that is not ambiguous (see the list of movies he saw) that there are aliens. point.

  46. Michael, I remind you again that the discovery of life on other stars will not interfere with any religion, compared to the creation of artificial life in a laboratory (which in itself seems much more likely than the discovery of radio signals that swirl in noise after 2 light years).

  47. I must say, I always enjoy reading articles dealing with science fiction, from the creator of SETI and always happy to discuss their enormous contribution to humanity, with an investment of millions of dollars:

    1. Screen saver.
    2. Seth Shostak.

It's just a shame that they continue to ignore the facts on the ground...

And before they start throwing catapult stones at me, have a nice weekend everyone. I'm going to watch the movie "Radio Days" (reminiscent of SETI, but contributed much more to humanity than them).

  48. The cool:
You are allowed to do whatever you want with your time and money.
In my opinion and in the opinion of many others, the question of the existence of intelligent life outside the earth is a very interesting question and as you know there are those who are so interested in the question that they have already made up a story for themselves that it has already been answered and that the aliens are visiting here.
This is of great importance both in terms of understanding the ways in which life develops and intelligence develops - something that may advance us in creating these phenomena artificially, both from many practical aspects - more optimistic (studying alien technologies - again - something that some fantasize has already happened) and less optimistic (like being ready if one of them comes to take over the earth), and from a philosophical point of view (for example - this will oblige the believers of the various religions to be very creative in a new interpretation of the holy books so that they can continue to tell us that they knew this in advance, they just didn't want to find out for themselves).
If you think you'll achieve similar feats in counting grains of sand then you really should do it.

  49. No problem, you know people live outside the internet as well...
In our view, the superstitions (including religions of various kinds), the spiritual approaches (Shua XNUMX), the ignorance and the lack of understanding lead people to irrational thinking, which in itself is not harmful as long as it remains in the domain of the individual (like sex...), but as soon as it Applied in areas where it would have been better to leave the stage to logic, its shallowness and mockery become exposed for all to see and must then be put in its place so that it keeps its head in the areas it deserves, which have nothing to do with science.

  50. Yigal G.:
    Sorry I didn't catch that.
I remembered your name but I no longer remembered your past responses.
Now I remembered and realized that I should have taken it.
Respond more so I don't forget again 🙂

  51. Michael,
The passage in A. He was completely sarcastic and meant to show people what nonsense they were writing (what to do, the 'paper' tolerates everything!).

  52. Yigal c.
None of the civilizations in the galaxy existed 15 billion years ago.
It is not at all clear that the civilizations that exist today in the galaxy are more advanced than us, and even if they are, it is not clear that they have stopped using radio communication or that they ever will.
These are just baseless speculations whose entire purpose is to relax hands.
I have already said that according to the theory of relativity, communication on Orit is not possible, so it is doubtful if there is any point in developing another method of communication (and as mentioned - it is not certain that it is possible).

Regarding your words about the waste - I agree one hundred percent.
I really don't understand this section of people who think they should tell scientists what to invest their time and investors what to invest their money in.

  53. Absolutely right!
    A. There is no doubt that all the civilizations in the universe have long since matured and passed our stage, using all kinds of inventions of science fiction and fantasy, not one of them is at a stage close to ours (we used to use the 'backward' technology of the radio) not to mention being at earlier stages. And we haven't talked about the moment when our transmissions will actually reach them or theirs to us - surely all civilizations within 500 light years from here have passed the radio communication stage much more than 500 years ago (at least 15 billion years ago...).
    B. What is all the talk about wasting resources for nothing - and what are we all doing? Resources are wasted on electricity, computers, internet and who knows what else instead of contributing to the advancement of all the poor in the world by donating food, medicine, etc.!!!!!!
    And think about it…

  54. What's up with you guys!

    - First thing about SETI, it is blessed that they are doing everything to establish contact and it is clear that even if the investment goes down the drain it is still worth trying, if not we persist in this approach where do you think the human race would be today?
I personally also believe that the aliens use technology more advanced than radio waves, but that does not mean that there are not radio waves in space from less advanced civilizations or from the past of more advanced ones.

    - Regarding those who say that the money should be invested in medicines and the like, maybe try for a second to think about the enormous significance of the official discovery of an advanced culture in outer space!
Think about what this will do to the people of the Earth, to science and progress (in the end, we as humanity also want to play battles in space like the aliens...), the refutation of many myths of many of the world's religions, and especially the creation of a global union around the human race and reducing the amount of international conflicts . In short, it will fly us into the future and into a new era of the space race, the spread of humanity to other planets and establishing contact with crazy cultures that will hopefully also reveal to us a lot of modern technology, including measures that will help us overcome diseases and how to utilize new energy resources.

And one last thing - for all of you, whether you are interested in the subject or not, aliens have been visiting our planet for decades and with insane frequency. Anyone who is going to jump in and deny it, do them a favor and at least read a few articles and watch a few movies before they speak:

Link to a good movie (Out Of The Blue) which also won awards and distributed to all members of the American Congress:

Link to a website of very factual and interesting articles (ignore the fact that this is a New Age section, the real study of aliens has nothing to do with mystical things and the like, as do the articles below):

  55. Yehuda

It may be that one day we too will use tachyons for communication (and unfortunately we will probably continue to broadcast the same substandard reality series on it).
But on the way there we used shouting drums in Morse on the radio and more. It is likely that some of the other civilizations also went through a route that involved radio transmission.
You don't believe that everyone came down from the trees and switched to broadcasting immediately with the help of tachyons.

  56. I agree with Adam, instead of wasting processing and calculation power on irrelevant radio wave analysis, it is better to invest it in analyzing protein structure and bonds (which will help create drugs and biotechnological aids), or in genome research (which will bring tasty, durable and cheaper genetically modified food for the world's population) or with clever weapons and means of war. And anything from which it will be possible to see grain already in the next 20 years (and no, aliens millions of light years away from us really have no ability to influence us). Of course, the study of measures to preserve nature, the environment, air quality and breaking the greenhouse effect are also desirable.

But SETI is literally letting money and resources be driven by fantasies

  57. I've already said this on this important site several times and I'll say it once more, and that's because science wastes money on programs that are highly unlikely to bear fruit, while on the other side of the world people are dying for bread.
People so you can wake up because the money is going to nonsense (although science has helped with important discoveries several times) instead of going to places that really need it

  58. Michael, what strange doubts!

I will give you 3 overwhelming proofs of the existence of aliens:

1+2. In the movie 'Men in Black' (1 and 2) it is clearly seen that the earth is bombarded with aliens.
    3. In a movie with Tom Cruise (can't remember his name) I saw an alien turning a bicycle wheel.

post Scriptum. Look at channel 6 in the Stargate series, you'll see that free people go the speed of light there.

  59. What strange reactions!
"If they don't use the radio, then the whole investment is a waste"
    Walla?
Surely the author of this claim also says "if there is no cure for AIDS, then all attempts to find a cure for it are a waste" or "if there is no oil in a certain place, then all the drilling there is a waste".
Of course, these are all silly claims because they don't contribute anything at the moment when the decision needs to be made.
And in relation to the strong claims about the alien modes of communication, what does it say?
It is not known that there are tachyons but they are known to use them.
It is known that using media about Orit contradicts the principle of causality, but it is easier to give up the principle of causality than the fantasies.
sweet Dreams. Keep going from linear to quantum and back without knowing what you are talking about.

  60. By 2025 these companies will already come to us [physically] then we will finally "discover them"
I agree with you Yehuda that their technology [intelligent beings in the universe] is far beyond radio and radar communication. And that in the ethics of the universe, the development of a new and undeveloped intelligent culture in its early stages should not be interfered with.

But today, when our culture is on the verge of transitioning from linearity to quantum, things are finally starting to become clear, and even bring our ability to understand "to the culture of all universes"

He already said something in NASA not long ago that we invest a lot, but not in the direction. And intelligent beings do not use our radio equipment.
How can you create a cosmic connection at such rates?

    Shabbat Shalom

    Doron.

  61. I guess they don't use radio waves which is outdated technology for their taste. All over the galaxy they use transmissions that are above the speed of light, based on tachyons of various kinds, the problem is that they cannot transfer the technology to us because we see radio transmissions as the splendor of creation.
    Good Day
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  62. Who said aliens use radio waves? Maybe they have a different technology... in that case all this huge investment will cost nothing
