The nearest extraterrestrial civilization may be 33 light years away

New study suggests intelligent life is rare for the Milky Way – and if another civilization exists, it is much older than us
In a new study, researchers from Penn State University and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory analyzed human communications in deep space and found that human transmissions are often directed toward our spacecraft near Mars (bottom left), the Sun, and other planets. Because planets like Mars don't completely block the signal, an extraterrestrial intelligence that happens to be along the path of interplanetary communications—when the stars are aligned from its perspective—could detect the "leak." This finding suggests that humans should look for planetary alignments outside the solar system when searching for signs of extraterrestrial communications. Credit: Zaina Sheikh

If aliens are looking for us – this is how they will find us

The study indicates that if an alien civilization is trying to detect signals from Earth, the highest chance is during an alignment between Earth and Mars, when transmissions are made to spacecraft and rovers on Mars.

Breakthrough Listen project scanned entire galaxies for signals from advanced intelligent beings

The team identified 1,519 candidate signals that could not be attributed to radio frequency interference. After algorithmic processing, matching signal properties with known interference, and extensive visual inspection, no convincing evidence of signatures was found

Will artificial intelligence detect signals of extraterrestrial technologies?

To filter out unwanted noise and identify interesting signals, the researchers used a machine learning algorithm called a convolutional neural network (CNN). CNNs are a type of artificial neural network that can identify patterns in data,
