A glimpse into the eye of God

The Southern European Observatory photographed the Helix Nebula known as the "Eye of God" in high resolution, thereby contributing to more knowledge about planetary nebulae.

A new and in-depth look at the amazing planetary nebula - the Helix Nebula, known in the email circulating on the Internet asGod's eye' were taken using the Wide Field System on the telescope of the European Southern Observatory in La Silla, Chile. The images showed a rich background of distant galaxies, which cannot normally be seen in images of this nebula.

The spiral nebula, NGC 7293 is about 700 light-years away in the direction of Aquarius. It is one of the closest and most spectacular examples of a planetary nebula. These exotic objects are not related to planets at all, but rather the last bloom of sun-like stars before they turn into white dwarfs. The shell of gas is blown off the surface of the star, usually in beautiful complex shapes, and glows with ultraviolet light that originates from the central star, which is admittedly pale but still warm enough. The main ring of the Helical Nebula is about two light-years away from the Sun at the center of the system, or about half the distance between the Sun and its nearest stellar neighbor.

Despite being beautiful in photography, it is difficult to see this nebula with the naked eye and the history of its discovery is quite strange. It first appeared in a list of objects compiled by the German astronomer Karl Ludwig Harding in 1824. The name Selil came from its raw shape resembling a corkscrew as it was seen in the first photographs. Although the nebula looks more like a doughnut, research has shown that it contains at least two separate disks as well as an outer ring and fibers. The brighter inner disk appears to be expanding at a speed of 12 km/h, and therefore XNUMX years have passed since its formation.

Since the Spiral Nebula is relatively close to us - it covers an area of the sky corresponding to a quarter of the full moon and therefore it can be studied in much better detail than other nebulae and it showed an unexpected and complex structure. In the entire inner area of the ring there are small bubbles called "cometary connections", with pale tails trailing the insect from the central star. They resemble small drops of liquid moving across a glass surface. Although they look tiny, each knot is the size of our entire solar system. These relationships have been thoroughly studied by both ESO's Very Large Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope but are still only partially understood. A careful look at the central parts of this object reveals not only the connections but also distant galaxies visible through the thin luminous gas. Some of them appear to be galaxies from separate groups and are scattered over large parts of the image.

  1. By the way, have you ever thought about the fact that the entire visible universe appears to us as it appears, only because we observe it from the earth? I mean that there are probably infinite points of view on every point in the universe and at least from this point of view there are infinite pictures of the universe that are very, very different from each other. The appearance of Kuezer from the side is not the same as his appearance from Hetal - al. I don't even want to think about what a black hole looks like from certain angles.

  2. Isaiah:
In my opinion there is not even one person who really thought it was the eye of God.
For some reason there are many equally meaningless things that people think are the finger of God.
This is, of course, no less childish - especially in light of the fact that the things that those people ignore - if they were to attribute them to God's finger - they would really have to ask where that finger was before.

  3. It is of course suitable for preschoolers to attribute to God some kind of physical organ and also to think that he is especially large and is in the sky. This is not the eye of God any more than it is my eye. The whole image of this eye is like an illusion, a product of the angle of the photograph and the feverish human mind that seeks to fit everything it sees into the patterns it is familiar with. I suppose that a photograph of the glass from another place in the universe would have revealed To the human eye, something is quite different. Of course, this does not change the fact that the universe is a beautiful and inspiring place, and even its apparent randomness tries to suggest to us that it is too beautiful to be irrational.

  4. It looks like a space worm you see black all around and blue in the middle as if the inside doesn't belong to the outside

  5. There are some optical phenomena that result from the fact that the star is not pointy, the telescope is not accurate and the atmosphere.
The plus, if I'm not mistaken, is a bypass.
The circles are Airy rings, which is a form of Fernhauper entanglement

  6. I said an example, and they even said it was "in the direction of Aquarius".. and you meant cosmology? Anyway, probably.. yes.

And a toothpick is another story!

  7. I didn't understand your strange parallel between astophysics and astrology. Anyway, probably not.
Besides, nebulae, as stated in the article, is a product of the shell of the star flying, probably in all directions, that's why it is round, the fact that they decided to paint it blue is for beauty, you can put green in it if you want.

By the way, does anyone see a toothpick?

  8. Maybe everyone except him (and me) understands? It's like astrology - if by chance what is written there is true, it does not mean that the month of her birth is related to events! The probability that at least once the astrological prediction will be correct is very high, regardless of the date itself! The same goes for the nebula - the chance that there will be a nebula (or something else in space) in the shape of an eye is very high!

  9. This is still not proof that God is testing us and watching over us. Maybe it just happened to come out in the form of an eye.

  10. "The Spiral Nebula, NGC 7293 is about 700 light-years away in the direction of the Aquarius constellation."
Father, 700 light years is within our galaxy which is about 100 thousand light years in size. Maybe 700 million?
And unrelated and by association: those who have not read the book "The Toothpick in God's Eye" - it is recommended.

  11. This is a picture published last week, much more detailed than the previous one. Do they work that fast?
At least the person who receives the picture will send back to the person who sent it (don't spam, God forbid) a link to this news that those who receive the picture will at least learn the truth about this nebula and that it is more interesting than the nonsense of once in 3,000 years and this racism - that God has blue eyes.

  12. Man is a curious creature. Any investment you make, there will always be someone who will say "why this and not that".

  13. Is it possible to finally understand why it is so important for you to research about a galaxy that is millions of light years away from us?
Isn't it better that you invest it here on Earth, maybe and stop taking the money for such meaningless research
