How long will it take to reach the nearest star?

The Universe Today website is occasionally asked this question. How long will it take to fly to the stars? Will a person be able to do this in his lifetime? There are many answers to this possibility, some of them simple, others in the realm of science fiction

Project Orion from the XNUMXs - spacecraft powered by nuclear explosions
Project Orion from the XNUMXs - spacecraft powered by nuclear explosions

To make the answer easier, we'll answer how long it would take to reach the closest star to the solar system, Proxima Centauri. Unfortunately, any path we take to the stars will be slow, even if we use the most powerful nuclear engines available today.

In a previous article we looked at how long it would take to reach the moon. We took as an example the New Horizons spacecraft that took off on its way to Jupiter, and passed the surface of the moon in 8 hours and 35 minutes. We showed as a reverse example the Smart-1 spacecraft that was powered by an ion engine and traveled exactly the same distance in 13 months. Therefore we see that we have several options for flying short distances. We can of course also use flights within the solar system in Jupiter or Saturn that will give us a slight boost. But is it possible to build a dedicated spacecraft that will do something more extreme?

The closest star to Earth is our Sun. She is considered an average star. Our sun is surprisingly stable and provides the earth with the sunlight required for life to develop and thrive. We know that there are planets orbiting other stars in the vicinity of the solar system, but could they support life as effectively as the sun? In the future if humanity wants to leave the solar system, will we have a choice of stars to travel to, and how many of them will provide the right conditions for life to thrive? But where to go and how long will it take to get there?

The first choice would be Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the solar system and part of a triple star system called Alpha Centauri. Proxima is 4.22 light years from Earth. Alpha Centauri is the brightest of the three stars in the system and therefore it is named after him. Alpha Centauri itself and its close companion star are 4.37 light-years from Earth, but Percosima Centauri, the faintest of the three, is an isolated red giant 0.15 light-years from the pair. Red dwarfs produce much less energy than our sun so we must look for planets in a closer orbit to the red giant for it to be able to support life as we know it.

Interstellar travel conjures up some strange theories as to the technologies that will be used to get us there. Star Trek-style warping of space will have to remain in the realm of science fiction for now. It is likely that Star Trek would now take generations, not days. So let's start with one of the slow ways to travel through space and see how long it will take to get to Proxima Centauri? Remember, at the moment everything is a guess, there is currently no real point of reference for such a journey, unlike the journey to the moon.

The slow journey - moving pigeons, 81 thousand years

The idea of ion propulsion was brought up in science fiction decades ago. In recent years, the technology has moved from theory to practice in a big way. For example, the European Space Agency's Smart-1 spacecraft successfully completed a mission around the Moon after making a 13-month spiral orbit from Earth. Smart-1 used ion engines powered by solar energy, with the electrical energy needed to operate the engine being harvested from the solar collectors. Only 82 kilograms of xenon were required to propel Smart-1 to the moon, one kilogram of xenon helped increase the speed to 45 meters per second. A very efficient type of drive, but the price is of course - its slowness.

One of the first missions where ion propulsion technology was used was DeepSpace 1 to Comet Borelli in 1998. DS1 also used a Zenon-driven ion engine, which consumed 81.5 kg of fuel. Over 20 months of engine operation allowed the spacecraft to reach a speed of 56 km/h.

Ion engines are therefore more efficient than conventional engines, but they take much longer to accelerate to a reasonable speed. Because the maximum speed of an ion engine-based spacecraft depends on the amount of fuel (xenon) even if it is much smaller than the equivalent amount required of conventional fuel but high enough to be sufficient for long periods and the energy production capacity (e.g. a nuclear power reactor). Although there are still no interstellar spacecraft powered by an ion engine, we will take the Deep-Space-1 spacecraft as a point of reference, even though it was not designed to leave the solar system.

Assuming that 81.5 kg of Zenon made it possible to reach a maximum speed of 56 thousand km/h, assuming that there are no other factors affecting the speed such as approaching the planets and that the speed will remain constant throughout the journey, no less than 1 thousand will be required for Deep-Space-81 years to swallow the distance of 4.3 light years (1.3 persec) from Earth to Proxima Centauri. To put that long period into perspective, that's 2,700 human generations. It is therefore categorically possible to say that an interstellar mission based on an ion engine would be too slow to serve as infrastructure for an interstellar mission. However, if the ion engines are bigger and more powerful, it will be possible to cut down on this long period.

The fastest - gravitational assistance, 19 thousand years

The Helios 2 mission in 1976 was launched with the aim of investigating the medium between 0.3 astronomical units and the Earth's orbit. At the same time, Helios 1 (launched in 1974) and Helios 2 broke the record for the closest approach to the Sun. However, to this day, Helios 2 holds the record as the fastest spacecraft to fly in space. Helios 2 was launched using a conventional NASA Titan rocket (the spacecraft itself was built in Germany), and was placed in an extreme elliptical orbit around the Sun. Due to the eccentricity (e=0.54) it circled the sun in 190 days, and at perihelion (the closest point) its speed reached 240 thousand km/h. The orbital speed was achieved thanks to the gravitational pull of the Sun alone.

Gravitational assistance is a very useful technique for propelling spacecraft, particularly if the gravity of Earth or massive planets is used to accelerate the spacecraft to a higher speed. The Voyager spacecraft, for example, used the gravity of Jupiter and Saturn to reach its current speed of 60 km/h. Technically, Helios 2's perhelion speed is not a gravitational boost, it is the maximum orbital speed, but it still holds the record for the fastest man-made object.

Therefore, if Voyager 1 were to travel in the direction of the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, it would take no less than 76 thousand years (or slightly more than 2,500 generations) to cross the distance. And if we manage to reach the maximum speed of Helios 2, as I recall, 240 thousand Kamesh - it will take 19 thousand years (over 600 generations) to reach 4.3 light years. And again, these speeds are still slow.

The fastest - nuclear propulsion, 85 years

If we ignore propulsion methods that are under the heading of science fiction (wormholes, space jumps and teleportation), we are left with nuclear propulsion. Theoretically, a nuclear engine can be used for the fastest propulsion method (currently, nuclear technologies are used only for power supply purposes in spaceships). The idea of using nuclear energy for propulsion was first raised in 1947 and in 1958 the Orion project was founded to investigate interstellar travel. Broadly speaking, the project sought to harness the power of nuclear explosions for space travel to provide a spacecraft with a tremendous boost in a massive, focused thrust. This is the biggest advance to extract maximum energy from the spacecraft's fuel and minimize the cost and the maximum range, and therefore a high and focused thrust can enable faster and longer-range spacecraft with the minimum investment.

The agreement that prohibited nuclear tests in 1963 is the cause of the cancellation of the Orion project (due to the fact that a huge amount of nuclear waste would be required to be pumped out into space, but what speeds can a nuclear-powered spacecraft deliver? Estimates speak of 5% of the speed of light (5,400 billion km/h) Assuming it could travel all the time at such speeds, it would take such a spacecraft about 85 years to get from Earth to Proxima Centauri.

In conclusion, if you hope to fly to the nearest planet in your lifetime, the outlook is not so good. However, if humanity seeks to establish an interstellar Noah's ark containing a self-supporting community, it can get there in less than a century, if nuclear pulse technology is developed for it. In this way, their offspring would be able to land on a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri (at a much closer distance from Earth). But until we reach breakthroughs in interstellar travel and if science fiction does not become real science, we will be stuck with this slow traffic for the foreseeable future, and probably for the distant future as well.

  1. In my humble opinion, there is a mistake in the article - you wrote: "The estimates speak of 5% of the speed of light (5,400 billion km/h)"
There are 3600 seconds in an hour x the speed of light in one second - 299,792.00 = the speed of light in one hour - 1,079,251,200 km/h.
5% of 1,079,251,200=53,962,560 million kilometers per hour

Describe to us one experiment you did. Maybe we'll get a little wiser. In any case, a cognitive intensive care mobile is waiting for you near the house. Hugin and Monin will be there. It's all about Arga and summaries to choose a core.

A correction in the last line should be "I see you walking hand in hand towards the setting sun." Absolute idyll

The nonsense you emit is in commercial quantities. If you were to receive a Nobel Prize you would make a lot of money and with this capital you could finance the psychological treatment you desperately need and the pills you need. In any case, my congratulations for your future with the choice of your heart, blowing water. I see the two of you walking hand in hand towards the rising sun.

When you do experiments you have to do it under laboratory conditions and under controlled conditions and then publish it as an article in journals like the Science. you didn't you didn't do anything In any case your experiments stack up as if you were under the influence of Sammy Ziya. In any case, you sound like a total loss/

  8. Honorable Mr. Haim, the beauty of the experiment I did was that if you did them too, you would talk endlessly all day. Sincerely

  9. The revolution
There is one case that does not fit what you say (not that I disagree with you!).
At the end of the 90s, they covered the world with optical fibers that were orders of magnitude faster than the speed of the end units.
The entire Internet revolution of recent years is a result of this networking. People certainly predicted, for example, the revolution in Internet commerce.
But again, as you said, the chance of that is tiny.

  10. Water blowing
How many times do you have to be told that your squeamishness crosses all limits. When will you start to stop smearing? Your obsession indicates a mental problem that requires professional attention. I can't do that. You and Hugin Munin could be a hot couple. What do you think of the match?

  11. I had the honor of doing experiments in Warp as well, after returning time, and I succeeded, honorably

  12. Of all the astro engravings of various kinds. Hanan Sabat spoke to the matter.
A tiny chance to predict breakthrough future technologies (and emphasis on breakthrough), based on the technology that exists today.
This is a paradox because actually the saying is based on the knowledge we know to this day and it is that...
Every fundamental breakthrough was not based on existing technology (see the example of the sailing ship versus a motorized ship) but on thinking outside the box and creating innovative technology that is completely different from what was known before it.

  13. All attempts to predict the future, based on existing knowledge - have failed!

Technological progress and technological leaps came, when things were done differently and not as a result of the development of existing technologies - to cross the ocean from Europe to America, they once used sailing ships in a journey of months. Motorized ships that crossed the ocean in several weeks are not a development of sailing ships. Airplanes that cross the ocean in a few hours are not a development of ships and the space shuttle, which covers the distance in a few minutes, is not a development of an airplane. These are completely different technologies... Therefore, as has been said and rightly so - the prophecy was given to fools.

  14. Humanity has proven that it has the ability to develop technologies that exceed the imagination of any person at a given point in time. Those who lived in 1850 could not understand, for example, cellular communication, for example, nuclear propulsion reactors. On the other hand, today there are black holes in our understanding of, for example, supersensory communication, the issue of teleportation, and more. Another point is the fact that development does not move in a linear fashion but in technological leaps that are accelerating at an exponential rate. Therefore, any calculation is irrelevant and there is a reasonable chance of having means for both communication and propulsion that do not occur to us in the next 50 or 100 years. Put the most sophisticated cell phone in a time capsule today and in 25 years everyone will laugh at you.

  15. There is no such thing and there will never be such a thing as zero time!!
The information flows at the speed of light, the quanta or photons or electrons or whatever that just has zero mass move at the speed of light only.
Large bodies like a spaceship as they move faster than just gets bigger and so does the self resistance.
The speed of light is 300,000 kilometers per hour or over a billion kilometers per hour or 9.5 trillion kilometers per year
And not as written 5400 billion km/h what is this speed??

  20. Even if particles flew at a speed higher than the speed of light, we would still not be able to do it ourselves
You can't accelerate to the speed of light, you have to reach this speed immediately, so even the legislators who broke the speed of light, their starting speed was at least the speed of light

  21. Moti Gilboa:
You also said some true things but allow me to complicate things and ask what do you think quantum transmission is?
I suggest that you read the previous comments before you answer.
You should come back and bring up your words on the subject of extraterrestrials in the discussion on extraterrestrials (even though the same ideas have already come up many times)

  22. All the knowledge that is in the hands of man today is only thousands of years old. The practical solution lies not in engines but in quantum transmission, because even the speed of light is not practical for in-depth exploration of space, so until then we are limited and have to behave accordingly. The galaxy is close because the journey is very long (56 years at the speed of light to Andromeda round trip) and even if the person survives he returns to Platna after millions of years which is doubtful if it is inhabited and if so what?

    Regarding extraterrestrials:
My words are inspired by Stephen Hawking.
*History has proven that when an advanced culture meets an inferior culture, the encounter is usually disastrous for the inferior culture, and it's all about the same species.

    * Nature explains that when a strong species meets a weaker species, it attributes to it as an available resource and nothing else (like the Nazis did with soapy people).

If so, we see that man destroyed nature and exterminated species out of lack of awareness or greed, while in the last century, when ecological awareness rose, various nature protectors emerged (increasing their number).

    * Why does NASA not tell us about the existence of aliens?
    A. She doesn't know anything!!!
    B. She knows, but an orderly relationship has not yet been established and therefore there is no point in announcing it to the public
And it fits the various space programs when the goals clearly show the advancement of humanity more than the pursuit of aliens but when I consider it again I see that they are indeed trying to contact someone and if the Apollo 20 story is true then at all...

In conclusion: we can hope for enlightened aliens or prepare for something else, but as long as there was no alien message to all of humanity, it is likely that we are not worth much in terms of space or ... that we are everything.

  23. I was confused by the reservation. Retry:
Bell's theorem does not prove that there are no hidden variables in the broad sense. But any theory of hidden variables should be non-local.
    Non-local=allows correlations between distant particles
Correlation = unlike cause-and-effect which remains local- deterministic (hidden variables), and in the context of the conversation, the transfer of information is still limited to the speed of light.

Indeed, there are valid theories in terms of quantum mechanics that are actually hidden variable theories. One of them was brought up a few months ago on the science website (the universe as a holography)

  24. point:
You are talking about an interpretation of quantum theory in general and not about Bell's theorem.
Bell's theorem does not allow hidden variables. Point 🙂
If there were hidden variables dictating the result, the splitting of the universe into parallel universes with different results would not be possible either, because in the past of all those universes the hidden variables were the same and therefore the same result would be guaranteed.

  25. According to what I remember, from Bell's theorem there may be several compromises to the results, one of them is that there are hidden variables but there are also parallel universes in each of which a different collapse is created. Something like that…

  26. point:
    Precise: proves.
Bell's theorem (this theorem is a mathematical entity with a proof) claims that certain results cannot be obtained when there are hidden variables and in an experiment these results are obtained.

  27. to be exact. This Bell experiment does not prove that there are no hidden variables. Just reinforces this perception with certain assumptions.

  28. B:
This does indicate the existence of a non-local connection, but as far as I know, it does not indicate the possibility of transferring information - it only makes it possible to verify that information that we did not know in the first place is indeed coordinated between two particles.
That's why I also asked you about the link to the teleportation of an image because it contradicts what I said (because an image is information) and if it did happen, it is very interesting to me - what's more, it would be in a clear contradiction with the special theory of relativity and it is known that there is no contradiction between the special theory of relativity and the quantum theory .

  29. Michael
If we may comment, the EPR experiment initiated by Einstein was intended to point out a fundamental problem in the quantum theory.
According to the following argument: since everyone agrees that the speed of light is an upper barrier to the passage of information. The only way left to explain the EPR is that there are additional transparent/hidden variables that the quantum theory does not include in it. And necessarily according to the above agreement they give an explanation Local to a phenomenon that seems to contradict the principle of the speed of light.
The result of the argument: the quantum theory is incomplete.
Bell's theorem proved that there are no such variables. Therefore the theory is valid.
A by-product of the theorem explicitly indicates the existence of a non-local connection at a distance between two quantum entangled objects. without breaking the light speed limit.
Time will tell whether the phenomenon can be attributed to Star Trek.

  30. Meir Shmuel:
Did you read the link I gave you?
What I said is written right there.
It is not wise to wave the name of a sentence you heard about without understanding it.

  31. Michael –
What do you mean there are no variables?
The very fact that measuring the value of a particle at point A changed the value of a particle at point B indicates the passage of information without time.

I'm not talking about the transition of material. What I am claiming is that if we manage to transmit information in a thing that is equivalent to a journey through space. Because it will be possible (in the future) with suitable equipment to simulate the material cause.

  32. not complicated:
The participants: the observer on Earth (stationary...), a spacecraft, a planet.
What is described below is in relation to the viewer:

The planet is moving at a constant speed. The spacecraft was moving at a constant speed before the encounter.

If the spaceship arrives at a speed opposite to the speed of the star and in the right direction, then the star will rotate the spaceship so that it moves in the opposite direction (it will not really be 180 degrees opposite, because then it means that the spaceship is too close and will not be able to disconnect) to its initial direction.
    And the result:
    1) Relative to the star: the spacecraft will be ejected at the same speed as it arrived (there is no violation of conservation of energy), but with a different direction (opposite, the spacecraft took momentum from the star).
    2) In relation to the observer, the spaceship received a speed increase of twice the speed of the star (the star took all the speed from the spaceship in one direction and added it to it in the opposite direction).

  33. Do not understand:
By the way, I didn't just give the link in English because the explanation there is much more exhaustive.
So... if anything... then make the effort to read what you are directed to instead of looking for unhelpful links just to excuse your laziness.

  34. Do not understand:
To understand you have to make an effort.
The explanation is written in a very detailed manner in the links and no one will be able to spare you the intellectual effort.
Of course, the solution of describing the matter as a stupid cliché is easier to implement.

  35. If anything, then there is a link in Hebrew it is called "gravitational entanglement" -

    http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%A7%D7%9C%D7%A2%D7%AA_%D7%9B%D7%91%D7%99%D7%93%D7%AA%D7%99%D7%AA

But it's an unclear matter, why new - after all, there is no energy "out of nowhere", if the star pulls the spaceship towards it when it is on its way to it, then it will pull it to the same extent and with exactly the same force even when it is moving away from it, I don't understand why this principle is different if it revolving around the sun….

In any case, and this comment appears on this site quite a few times in quite a few articles, I think that once and for all someone will explain this matter more clearly, maybe it's even worth writing a short article that will clarify the matter! Father for your attention…….

  36. without understanding
According to what I understand, the spacecraft that approaches the planet increases its speed because of the star's gravity and in addition it receives another component of speed from the rotational movement of the planet around the sun
The final speed of the spacecraft is an initial speed before it enters the planet's gravity and another component of the planet's rotational speed (the connection of the speeds is vector).
In fact the planet loses a very small fraction of its kinetic energy to the spacecraft after it has moved away.
    This is more or less.

  37. Like, I know it's true and causes the spacecraft to accelerate, but I don't understand how it's done. So if someone really knows how this is done then we would be happy if he would explain it for all the science responders.
    good week
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  38. I don't understand dear,
Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's evil or a stupid cliché.
I'm interested at what expense the energy comes to accelerate the satellite.

  39. Can someone explain to me for once the meaning of this stupid cliché that claims that a spaceship can "accelerate" its speed by passing by a star with a strong gravitational force?? After all, to the same extent that the star accelerates her when she approaches it, it will also pull her back and slow down her speed when she passes it and starts moving away from it, so why repeat this foolish claim over and over again. Can someone explain this matter to me once?

  40. An important detail that is forgotten, space is not empty, therefore, any spaceship will disintegrate and evaporate long before it reaches the nearest planet.

  41. 5% of the speed of light 54 million km/h, 100 times less than what is written.

  42. B:
By the way - I read at the time about teleportation of a single particle but I did not come across information about teleportation of an image.
Do you have a link to the news you mentioned?

  43. B:
Einstein did not like the whole idea of entanglement and expressed it in the thought experiment called EPR (after him and Podolsky and Rosen).
More or less the same objection was also behind the idea of explaining the entanglement by hidden variables and Bell's theorem showed that this is not the case and that there are no hidden variables here.
Bell's theorem did not create new teleportation possibilities nor did it eliminate any of the existing ones.

  44. Michael
In the above link it says "local hidden variables"
    Local in Hebrew.
The sentence does rule out the possibility that there are "local" variables.
And opens an opening for non-local action which Einstein did not like.
In recent experiments they managed to transmit an image from a distance in this way.
It is not impossible that this will continue in the transfer of material in the future.

  45. In my previous response I was of course talking about Meir Gal's words.
Meir Shmuel's words are not true because there is no way to transfer matter at a speed that exceeds the speed of light even if words like "lamatrax" are used.
Bell's theorem is not relevant and it is only intended to show that in the quantum entanglement no hidden variables are involved.

  46. Meir:
This direction is indeed being studied today and there is even some progress - not in freezing but in the induction of hibernation - a prolonged sleep similar to animal hibernation.
This technology is also very relevant to various surgeries and the treatment of accident victims - when you want to slow down the entire metabolism in order to significantly increase the treatment time available to doctors.
In my opinion, it is very likely that this kind of useful technology will be in the near future.

    Eyal A:
    What is this misanthropy?
There are a lot of people who think outside the box without any problem.
Most of them are people of science and technology - the kind that those who have no idea like to slander - but look at how different the world you will live in is from the one they lived in 100 years ago (200 or 300 years is nothing to talk about anymore)

  47. Proxima Centauri, being a red giant, is a star at the end of its life. Our sun is a half-life star and we have about 4 more to go
A billion years until you become a red giant. As such, it is worthwhile, in my opinion, to concentrate effort, at this stage of the research, in two main directions:
One - finding a way to bring water to Mars. by ice comets for example. After all, Mars, according to our current understanding, is the #1 candidate for replicating life.
The second - locating, as accurately as possible, Mars-like planets near one of the nearest stars. After all, if a travel technology is developed for a distance of 4 light years, it will also be good for a distance of 6 or 8 light years.

  48. 1. The speeds given in the article are relative to what exactly? serve? Or maybe to the initial speed that was set as zero and every acceleration was taken into account?

    2. I wrote about this before in an article of this type about the results that will be achieved with a constant acceleration that is as big as the acceleration we feel right now while we sit and read these words-Ahad G. True, the idea does not exist technologically. But the principle that could fit is really an ion propulsion type engine, only much more efficient or alternatively restrained nuclear propulsion - that is, nuclear explosions as continuous as possible so that the thrust force they produce every second will not exceed (nor decrease) one G.

    3. Meir- I liked what you wrote. It is not possible that since we define ourselves as intelligent beings and use electromagnetic waves for long-range communication, we will conclude that every intelligent culture also uses AM waves for long-range transmissions. Pardon the expression, but we have a really crappy nature characterized by a miserable lack of imagination and horribly fixed thinking. Few people throughout history were able to really think outside the box. That's why hundreds and thousands of years after them, their name lives on and their legacy kicks. from whom one should learn.

  49. During the development of the nuclear propulsion technology will also be developed to freeze the body.

  50. The most promising area for investigation that will bring about the technological leap is quantum theory.
According to Bell's theorem (proven by experiment) it is possible to transfer information in zero time to any point in space
The transfer of information is equivalent to a journey in space, because it is possible to simulate (the matrix) the transfer of matter in both directions.

Therefore, in my opinion, within 50 to 100 years we will travel in space. Even for ranges of millions of light years (intergalactic) in the time of a few minutes.

And yes, in my opinion, as soon as we find a way to use Bell illumination for communication, we will discover "to our surprise" that we are not alone. Because the communication channel used by intelligent beings is not limited by the speed of light, as the Seti people try without success. These are in a channel that allows messages to be transmitted in zero time. The day we activate the quantum communication channel we will receive messages from thousands of extraterrestrial civilizations.

  51. Arriving in a new place should be done within one lifetime or 2-3 at most. It seems to me that for more than that, the chance that something will go wrong along the way and the mission will fail is too great. Of course you have to think about it and experiment with tools that may be relevant in the future. Nuclear exploitation as well as gravitational exploitation together and in addition systems that use free hydrogen or light energy may constitute a synergistic power source, even if less efficient in terms of the amount of fuel per unit of distance per unit of time (some would call it speed).

"Nowadays, nuclear technologies are used only for power supply needs in spaceships"

I think that nuclear engines to generate electricity are also in submarines and not only in space, as written in the article.

  52. To my father

Must be in his lifetime or not?

    good evening
