They stop looking for radio signals from aliens - the SETI telescope array is closed due to lack of budget

The system belonging to the University of California at Berkeley was closed due to a sharp decrease of 90% in federal funding and a continuous decrease in funding from the state of California * The STI Institute is looking for help from donors

Is the United States abandoning space and converging into Earth? At least that's how it seemed when federal and California state funding for UC Berkeley's Hat Creek Radio Observatory, also known as the Allen Telescope Array, was canceled. This telescopic array is used by the SETI Institute to listen to radio signals from space and try to locate in them signals coming from intelligent beings.
In a letter to the project's donors, ST Institute CEO Tom Pearson described in detail the decision of the University of California at Berkeley, the partner in operating the telescope array, to reduce the activity of the observatory to the level of hibernation, starting this month. The National Science Foundation funding for the University Radio Observatory given to Berkeley to operate the telescope array was reduced to about a tenth of its previous level, and the increase in the California government's budget deficit caused the state's funding for the telescope to be reduced.
The ST Institute works in several ways to ensure the return of the array to activity as soon as possible. Pearson's email emphasizes that with some work, the telescope may perform activities for the US Air Force. Donor support is also required to restart SETI observations of the array. For the first time in history, ST researchers are able to use a telescope to study solar systems with small planets discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope. We also work together with a consortium of thinkers to develop fascinating opportunities for the public to participate in the future of ST, thus making science less vulnerable to government budget cycles.

  1. Thanks Rafaim for the learned answer.

And now I will ask from those who know, what is the transmission frequency between KDA and deep space spacecraft that were sent in the XNUMXs and XNUMXs?

I'm just curious if it's the same frequency 1430 MHz, the same frequency presented by Daniel from comment 49 as having a signal that reaches the greatest distance.

  2. man
What happened? Stuck on Earth and can't get back?
And what do you need the frequency for anyway? Ask Scotty to send you there. simple.

  3. can someone let me know please
What is the transmission frequency between KDA and deep space spacecraft that were sent in the XNUMXs and XNUMXs?

  4. For the avoidance of doubt, the writer under the name 'Cheen' is another Chen 🙂

  5. Blizovsky - for your information - listens on a frequency of 1430 kilohertz which is the frequency that ideally resonates with hydrogen which according to information is the most common substance in the universe, and therefore the signal reaches the greatest distance... The assumption is that the "other side" is aware of this fact and will also use this frequency.

  6. Historical perspective:
    Decline of a value state.
If you look at American thinking until the beginning of the seventies, it was pioneering.
If anyone happened to see a movie about the sinking of a Russian nuclear submarine that sank in 1969, made by the Americans
In 1974 or so - we were impressed by the technological courage. There are no such things today. Also the 1969 moon landing in my memory.

If you look at the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe from 1947, grants (not accompanied) were awarded to European countries
Without the coercion of the American system, thinking that an economically strong Europe is the main customer of the USA.
The plan was reached jointly with American labor unions so as not to encounter resistance from any front.
They also demonstrated creativity on the subject of Germany. Realize that without a strong Germany, Europe will sink into the destruction of after the World War and from there into communism.

Today the American managers at Combers are talking about streamlining by moving development centers to India.
The method where the employee is an object, which can be replaced does not work. An organization that works without the loyalty of its employees,
Not working. A person wants hope, rest of spirit, loyalty of the organization to him. Over-concentration of capital has also hit Americans hard.

  7. The option that the aliens control us as a people is in the same category as demons and spirits and the like.. Millions of people report that they are abducted by aliens, in the life of Rabak the aliens who distorted the space or I don't know what they did to be here, can't they abduct us without us being aware of it? G. Should there be a dramatic entrance in the dark with lights in a room occupied by someone sleeping alone? A figment of man's imagination.. And because it sounds delusional, all the relatively impressive construction in the previous periods that they don't know how to explain, so they claim that aliens came and gave us tools to build.. come on.. it makes more sense that the Einstein of architecture was born who found ways to build these things. The fact that the aliens control the animals does not advance me in anything beyond the fact that most of their behavior is consistent with science, logic, and nature. There is a strong possibility that aliens are aware of us but do not interfere and let us develop on our own.. but it feels like science fiction to me. According to the logic, it is likely that they are not aware of our existence due to the great distance, which I assume there are not many of them. This is logical thinking.

  8. So maybe you can really enlighten our eyes, dear ghost, what are the chances that the aliens not only exist but also control us and the animals on Earth?

    ……..The truth is out…… THERE

  9. Grace

If there really is a being that is more intelligent than the being on Earth then there are at least 4 possibilities:
1: That they want to contact us.
2: That they don't want to contact us.
3: that they are not aware of our existence.
4: that they are aware of our existence but cannot/do not want to contact us.

    If 2,3,4 are correct then:
We will not make contact with life more intelligent than us. (And in this case stopping the SETI project is definitely relevant because it will save money).
To the (smaller) extent and the first clause is true:
So they have better tools than we do to contact us, and in this case it doesn't matter if SETI is stopped or not.

In any case, there is also a chance that the aliens not only exist but also control us. And not only do they control animals on Earth, but they also don't want us to contact them because it would interfere with their control of animals on Earth.
Besides, I recommend you consider the following sentence (which I heard somewhere):
"Humans do what they are supposed to do" (I guess the sentence can be generalized to all animals).

  10. A preliminary report was received from WikiLeaks about the reason for the termination of the SETI project, the government was afraid of being fined according to Gilad Erdan's new noise law if noise signals were indeed received.

  11. Grace:
Some estimate the number of life-bearing planets (other than Earth) at zero.
Do you think there are much less?
With the Drake formula you can get any number you want.

  12. No one knows anything about the dark energy and in the darkness is hidden the possibility of change - vote dark.

  13. I don't know if dark energy can be used as a means of communication, on the face of it it is meaningless. But the general thinking is correct, you have to start trying and looking for other directions.

  14. Machel,
If indeed there is dark energy, perhaps the transmissions of advanced aliens are carried out using it, then the whole discussion here includes claims about irrelevant plausibility?

  15. Well I'm not complete if what I say. I don't really know what is needed to cover the entire galaxy with radio broadcasts and more without a break.. I would love to hear an opinion from someone who understands the matter. What I do claim is that the number of intelligent life in the galaxy is much smaller than estimated, and much smaller than we estimate.

  16. And by the way, Chen:
There really is also a technical limitation and flooding the galaxy with radio transmissions that will arrive by itself that can be received seems impossible.

  17. Grace:
You do not answer the question.
It is possible to argue about the Drake equation and the influence of Jupiter and the moon (and I think you are wrong on these points as well) but that is not what I commented on and I do not understand why you suddenly bring it up.
I commented on your claim as if the transmissions of the intelligent aliens would necessarily fill the space and we would have already received them.
At first I thought that this mistake of yours stems from the wrong assumption that they broadcast all the time and I brought us as an example of intelligent beings who do not do this.
Now I see that the problem is a much more basic mistake.
You say: "The transmitter didn't reach us because of the distance? We will turn on the devices in 50 or 1000 years."
It seems as if you think that a transmitter that has reached a certain point has already stayed there forever and will be picked up as soon as the walkie-talkie is opened.
This is of course not the case at all.
If a transmitter lasts 5 minutes then throughout the history of the universe the earth will only be able to receive it for 5 minutes.
If the transmitter reaches the earth in the thousand years when there was no listening - it will never be received.

  18. You don't understand - we don't need to look for aliens anymore. They sit in the government in the Bank of Israel and in the big companies

  19. Hanan Sabat,

It surprises me that as the representative of the Association for the Study of UFOs, i.e. among the only ones here who does not have enough, you kill the SETI project. So what do you offer? Should we continue to rely on the old ladies who walk at night by the lakes?

    contract in the stars,
Your claims are the same claims that are always made against basic science budgeting. What would it do if we sent a man to the moon? Who needs to sequence the entire human genome at a cost of billions? Instead we will give money to the hungry in Africa, distribute resources and settle in the uninhabited areas. But this is a big mistake. If we direct all the money to the hungry, we will end up with the hungry, without any nature and without resources. However, if science advances us to new technologies, only then might there be some chance that we will move forward and solve some of the problems. A considerable and significant part of our progress and quality of life and its origin in basic research.

  20. Iran, you missed my point. Believe me I have found myself quite a few times trying to convince people why there must be intelligent life, it is clear to me that we are not alone. Anyone who argues with me I tell them a hundred billion stars for a hundred billion galaxies. There is no doubt that life at a primitive level exists in abundance and intelligent life is also not lacking. In terms of a numerical amount in a galaxy that contains intelligent life here, I think we are wrong in our estimates, the Drake formula did not take into account all the factors I listed and there must be other factors that we do not think of, on the other hand, other conditions may be sufficient, but we will not go into it because we will just get into trouble. Anyway we have been receiving and transmitting for more than 50 years, our radio signals have reached distances that according to the Drake formula something should have received it. In any case, I already believe that the number of intelligent life in the galaxy is much smaller than we estimate. And once again I feel that we are missing something, we have to be creative simply, because it seems that the radio broadcasting method is not working. How long will I have to wait? 20 years? 1000 years? And what if after 1000 years nothing is heard? We'll have to find another way, I'm in favor of starting now.

  21. melody
It's amazing that you don't believe in the Drake equation..since it's not really intended to be an accurate tool but rather to calculate not for the amount of life in our galaxy..but for the amount of intelligent civilizations at our level at least in our galaxy..and even if you add more and more factors to the equation and lower it from the level of at least 10000 Like 50 or 10..it's still only one galaxy out of billions of galaxies...what now??? Will you find a new recipe for why there is no other life in the entire universe??

It's really a hodgepodge of nonsense...not in the near future that's for sure, but in the distant future we'll discover that this universe is infested with life.

And as for hungry people in Africa... there will be many more hungry people in the ice age that is approaching us for good... but man will survive... that is the nature of the strong world that survives.

  22. I start from a very simple assumption.
I don't believe in the Drake formula, it doesn't include many factors that need to be taken into account, for example:
Jupiter and Saturn that through their gravity deflect many comets and asteroids towards them.
The moon - which stabilizes us and without which it would not be possible to live on earth.
The rotation speed of the earth, the angle of the earth's inclination.
Let's not start talking in biological terms, we had time to develop (not a single event happened on the scale that destroyed the dinosaurs), until the development of the species that had the ability to reach such a development.
That's why I'm allowed to claim, and throw away in a very rude way that there are dozens of intelligent televisions. Probabilistically I may assume that they are more advanced than us.
And I truly believe that in their search for an intelligent creature they will go through radio waves, which they will try to broadcast non-stop throughout the galaxy. I really trust them to find a way.
The transmitter did not reach us because of the distance? We will turn on the devices in 50 or 1000 years.
I believe that the transmitter cannot be missed because an advanced culture will transmit non-stop and in every direction.
The only thing that can contradict everything I said here, is that if someone understands radio waves, then my question is, is it really possible, in a descriptive sense, of course, to cover the entire galaxy with radio broadcasts and in full scope? (Subtract the amount of time it will take because of the speed limit).

  23. Grace:
Did you read this in the operating instructions for intelligent races?
For your information - we are an intelligent race and we do not constantly transmit signals intended for reception at a great distance from the earth.

  24. If in the first second we did not perceive anything it means that we will never perceive anything
Don't you get it? The same intelligent race that broadcasts radio waves, will broadcast it all the time in such an amount that it will cover our entire galaxy.
As soon as we aimed the receivers we should have heard something, if it didn't happen... we had to find another direction.

  25. Oh SETI SETI…. I am convinced that the shutdown is temporary and budgets will be found, since I can't imagine that Seth Shostak will remain unemployed, perhaps the time has come to work on SETI's greatest development and contribution to humanity:

A screen saver - this time in version 2.0

  26. In case you didn't understand the name "the contract with the stars" actually indicates the people who are here, you are the stars and I am just the contract with you from the side and enjoying your thoughts.
The earth's resources will never run out if we distribute them correctly and in an efficient and high-quality way. Population explosion? You know how many unpopulated areas there are on Earth that no human foot has ever set foot on and I'm still not talking about the fact that if we invest great resources and minds to find a solution for living in the depths of the oceans. Invest in people here and see how many brains we lose due to stupidity and lack of consideration for the weak. There is a lot more to discover and channelize, but this cannot be done if we only look at our personal success.
I'll give an example that I encountered in my life, I saw a poor man who barely attended school for two years, but this man solves in his head any exercise you throw at him in the air, I'm talking about results that reach millions and he pulls the answer out of his brain in less than half a minute. Beyond that, he reads a book and remembers it by heart. Isn't it a shame for such increases? Couldn't science benefit from them? Do you know how many of these have already been buried under our hands and how many are still walking around and going to perish? My argument is to invest resources in the weakest people in the world and then we will have a thousand times greater results in the future in all fields of science and then you will search the stars as much as you want and you will also reach them more easily because you have invested in the minds of the earth.

  27. In his case, understanding the name "the contract with the stars" actually indicates the people who are here, you are the stars and I am just the contract with you from the side and enjoying your thoughts.
The earth's resources will never run out if we distribute them correctly and in an efficient and high-quality way. Population explosion? 28. contract in the stars,

Despite your bombastic name, you probably don't understand that one of humanity's hopes to be saved from a population explosion and the elimination of the earth's resources and its transformation into hell on earth is to go to the stars. In order to do this, the exploration of space and the stars must continue. Among the other things (and certainly not the most expensive of them) is the SETI project.
It is clear that the project is a gamble, but it is clear that if a transmitter had been received, there would have been no argument that the project was worthwhile because the change that would have occurred as a result of the reception of such a transmitter would have been so great and enormous.

  29. To her and everyone who didn't understand that the project is not based on hearing at all:
The project tries to detect electromagnetic radiation and not sounds (which, as we know, do not travel through space).

  30. My father, if you would give me an example of investing millions of dollars to create food in an atomic machine that would not leave anyone hungry in the world, I would say well done, but to spend millions for decades on things that are known in advance that the result of their discovery will not help humanity to live a normal life except knowing or not knowing the existence of Aliens somewhere in the infinite space.
We can direct science to the things that are important to our survival and then we will create more scientists in the world and reach more discoveries, and as for the corrupt governments and rulers, they will already fall from their seats due to the necessity of the power that will be in the people who have already filled their appetite and can fight the inequality and the injustice.
Discoveries in the world will be faster and funding for science will always be accessible because there will be tens of percent of brilliant scientists instead of the few small percent of scientists there are now.
I am fortunately not hungry for food and therefore allow myself to talk about these issues, but the hungry and the weak in the world are unable to even talk about their pain due to lack of strength and despair.

  31. I think, as you saw in the recent revolutions in Egypt and Libya, that money is not lacking in these countries, it is simply swallowed up by the rulers. By the way, Tal Inbar said in one of his lectures that in a conversation he had with a taxi driver, the driver claimed that he did not need the space at all. He has a GPS and he gets along great with it.

  32. Father, you probably eat well and sleep well, so it's easy for you to talk.
What is certain is that you are not in a state of malnutrition - do not delude yourself that the discoveries in space will help the hungry and the weak.
If there was a situation where every mouth had a spoon then it would also be easier to reach new discoveries because the hungry could use their thinking and wisdom in searching for discoveries instead of searching for the crumbs for their survival.

  33. For a contract in the stars. In the meantime they upgraded their technology like we did since the beginning of the space age and therefore lived better in their nest, only that their memory will trick them into thinking that the past was better.

  34. After hundreds of years of cups and wires of all kinds of colors they discovered a life sign of termites from another planet, but also discovered that to reach these termites they would need millions of years which unfortunately they don't have, everyone was upset and said how much time and how many friends we lost for nothing on the way at least we would have invested all this money in the nest ours and then at least we would live better in the nest.

  35. Chen T,

And after this tree they spread more glasses on more trees and bushes and on the ground and then they developed a technology that made it possible to increase the signal and build longer wires. And they spread more and more cups. Then one day they heard…

  36. An evolved termite nest wanted to find out if there were other evolved termites like it. They did discover that if they connect two plastic cups with a wire in them, you can hear what is said in one cup from a distance in the other cup thanks to the sophisticated wire.
So they placed one cup in the nest and a second cup on a very, very tall tree near the nest, at a height of 5 meters and waited to hear signals from other sophisticated nesters. Although, there were noises of birds' nests from time to time, sometimes they even heard snakes and lizards crawling on the tree, but so far they had not heard any chirping at the frequency at which they are used to communicating among themselves. Weird, huh?

  37. It makes sense that they canceled the budget, it's idiotic to fund this thing called seti when the feds know that the aliens exist and visit us often.

  38. my daughter,

Do you think that in this project people sit and listen at night with their thin ears to spaceships? Do you know what range of wavelengths they listened to? Give a little, not a lot, just a little credit to the researchers who are aware of the fact that the human hearing range is limited.

  39. the contract in the stars,

Do you really believe that now someone will help the "Africans who are dying of malnutrition" as you say and the aforementioned money will be directed to them?

It's a shame for every project and every scientific initiative that stops because in the long run they always pay off. The importance of basic science without any practical goals in the near term is enormous and should not be given up. You never know where the discovery will come from that will jumpstart humanity including the "dying Africans".

  40. Even so, man's range of hearing is very limited, and there are many, many voices, here on earth, that we cannot hear. The seti project was unnecessary from its first day, like other programs of heaven, which contribute nothing to the earth, except wars of pride.

  41. There are millions of people in the world who need the millions of dollars that are poured into millions of things that do not benefit us as humanity and that is why we as humanity look like this.
And we are proud and call ourselves intellectually developed.
So what if we discover a frequency light-years away from us, how will it help, for example, Africans who are dying of malnutrition? What was said to them "At least you died for the sanctification of the name "SETI", the revolutions in the Arab world can be both in our country and in the rest of the world. The inequality causes chaos that stems from strong anger at the occupants of the golden chair who grasp the world in their testicles.

  42. You don't understand! The federal government cut 90% of the budget because they know SETI was close to detecting alien signals, and hoped the cut would shut down the program before the signals were detected. This links to the latest documents published on the subject of the UFO crash in Roswell in 1947. It's all a federal government conspiracy!!

    Honestly, it's a bit of a shame...

  43. I'm not too sorry, I don't believe in this method, especially since no results have been seen since the establishment of the project, this is enough of an indication to understand that the continued financing of the project is simply to grind water.

  44. If they want to continue operating they need to find an economic model that will allow them to continue, relying on funding from governments was never a good idea. They need to target the private market and it's time to really activate the imagination, how do you make money from such a project? Maybe sponsors or something along those lines? Advertising for money?

  45. Waste of time to search in our time. You should wait 20 years and then the technologies will make it possible to do the search much faster.
