Can humans be infected by a computer virus?

A revolution in the computing world! A scientist from the University of Reading has become the first person in the entire world to be infected by a computer virus. Dr. Mark Gesson from the School of Engineering Systems infected with a computer virus a computer chip that was inserted into his hand as part of a study that dealt with how humans overcome components that are implanted in them and the possible risks that such components have.

An RFID chip - radio frequency identification - in the high end field was implanted in Dr. Geson's left hand last year. Less sophisticated RFID systems are used for store security to prevent theft and as pet chips. The chip inserted into Dr. Gesson's arm allowed researchers to track him.

The chip allowed Dr. Gesson secure access to the university building and his cell phone. And then something happened. The chip was infected by a computer virus inside Dr. Gesson's body. The chip began to disrupt the main system used to communicate with him.

If other components were connected to this system, the virus would be transmitted to them. Dr. Gesson responded, "By infecting my own implant with a computer virus, we demonstrated how advanced technologies have become and also opened a window to tomorrow's problems."

The fact that the scientist contaminated the computer chip could have implications for computer technology implants for medical uses to improve health conditions. For example, pacemakers and the state-of-the-art cochlear implant system from Cochlear. Also, as researchers find new applications to overcome medical problems in the form of implants, these implants are becoming increasingly vulnerable to computer viruses.

Dr. Gesson's research shows that implants are able to communicate, store and manipulate data, when they are actually mini-computers. This means that just like computers on the network, they are capable of being infected with a computer virus and the technology will have to deal with this problem, so that the implants, including the medical devices, are safe for use in the future. "Just like people with implants, after a year of having an implant, I feel to a large extent that it [the implanted chip] is part of my body," said Dr. Gesson.

"While it is exciting to be the first person to be infected with a computer virus in this way, I find that it is a very forbidden experience because I am very connected to the implant, but the situation has gotten out of control," Gesson added.

Dr. Gesson will present the results of his research next month at the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society in Australia, which he will chair.

  1. Oh, how much you don't understand and don't know, and the only one who scored here is 19, but he went far, how many decades, go back, how many good years have you already had, it's very simple, we are flesh and blood, but we are nothing more than highly sophisticated machines, unlike computers, we have the ability to learn and understand and analyze things What computers still can't do on their own, I wonder what will happen if they start to understand we've lost it, so take a brief explanation of how you can infect a person with a computer virus. It's here and it exists. No matter how much we deny it, it won't prevent it. It may sound like science fiction, but even 200 years ago, flying or watching TV was science fiction, that's why we are also afraid to use nanotechnology for medical purposes, because if nanotechnology is possible to cure most diseases, if not all, what would happen if someone programmed the cute robots to do stupid things? It will happen then and of course forget the pharmaceutical companies who are not so happy about it, what will they get out of it if they solve their health problems they will have no jobs left and if there are healthy people then mortality will be low and that means population explosion which the governments are not so keen on the idea This of course if we continue to write there is a lot more but who will listen to a donkey like me everyone believes that they want their own good and love them and want to help them why they will cure a disease for a thousand or two thousand dollars that can be sold to a sick person and keep him alive for a few years and he will pay 100 or 200 dollars a month for this medicine More profitable and for the end, if only you could see me, these were thirty seconds on health and viruses of all kinds, both biological and electronic

  2. To Dr. Gali Weinstein.
A]. Your response #14 is not correct at all.
Your diagnosis as if I (A. Ben-Ner) and LIZA were the same person is incorrect. I don't know who he is
Lisa and very reasonable in my opinion because I don't know him.
In response #14, you even increased what you did when you called on the people to say:
"... and therefore do not relate to him. Just ignore him."
Now, he, LIZA, has already apologized to you in response #11 and in response 33 he even sent you
A funny cartoon, probably to blow your mind.
You can already forgive him (in my humble opinion).
It seems that he repented with complete and sincere intention.
And besides, what do you want from the poor people? How should he fulfill your call to him:
"..just ignore him"? Isn't this a decree that the public cannot abide?
And as for me... that's another matter... I haven't apologized yet.
I am aware of my serious condition. getting worse and worse.
I always had a tendency to get into trouble.
Now I'm going to make another claim that will undoubtedly make my situation even worse, but we'll see
Because I have no choice and I am in the middle of a pre-written tragedy plot and I don't have the ability
    to change it.
    Well, I argued before you.
In your response #8, you wrote as follows:
"...if you write your full name and don't appear with a meaningless nickname, only then will I agree to answer you"
    And here, what is it?
I see, thank you Matthew, that you respond, greedily and with a desire, also to other inconsequential "cleaners"
Such as: "Apchik", "R. H Rafa Yam" and "Itzik". And more in a friendly and cordial way
And I ask: be silent heaven, listen earth.
What is this here?...what should it be?....double standards?....possible?....on the science site?
It is not because nothing has fallen in our country. Would our lives be from now on, when they were?
Doubt pierces every heart. Oh the heart, the heart!
If you want, I am ready to change my "nick" to "A. Ben Narchik".
    This can help ?

  3. No dear, my license was revoked, because a chip with a virus was implanted in my right hand, and when I tried to remotely renew the license... oops... the chip infected the main computer of the licensing office with a virus. So I had to ride like Einstein on a bicycle.

  4. Dr. Gali Weinstein:
Reminds a bit of a 3-speed manual transmission car.
I understand that you drove because Einstein didn't have a license?! He went to work by bicycle, didn't he?

  5. Right.
There is, of course, also the conspiratorial route pushed by some of the commenters here which is based on the result that also emerges from the research and according to which there are cases of A in which B does not exist in order to escalate it in the direction of if A then it is guaranteed that B will never happen

  6. Epchik, I must have an affinity for Einstein. how did you know? I was his third wife after Elsa 🙂
To the third wife Einstein said: "Look, my dear wife, my first wife explained quickly, then they understood slowly. My second wife did not explain at all, if you explain slowly then they will understand quickly." 🙂

  7. Dr. Gali Weinstein:
If you explain slowly, they understand quickly.
    incidentally
Do you have an affinity for Einstein?

  8. R. H Rafa Yam, thank you.
I want to clarify once again: in the article here I wrote in Hebrew what is written in English in the news of the University of Reading. And there is a link to the original news. And now after the news appeared here and on Ynet's science channel, Maariv also reported the news from the news agency. In my opinion, the news is not a fall at all and it is a very interesting news. And everyone in their right mind understands what is meant, that the device inside the person is infected with a virus and what the consequences are

  9. Mrs. Dr. Keep writing articles here as well, I enjoy reading your articles, even if the articles are difficult to understand at first because of your writing style, I still make an effort and try to understand what you write because the topics you choose to write about are topics that interest me as well.
    So are Yael Petar's articles.

On the other hand, there are writers here who not only write with spelling errors, but the topics they choose are topics that are of no interest to anyone and that hardly get any comments.
And even if they write without errors and on a relatively interesting topic, even then you have to make an effort to understand them and even that is not always successful.
In short, as in the past I visited your website and enjoyed reading what you write, so I will continue, and I hope you will also continue to write about interesting topics, and above all to ignore the creatures who do not understand their own lives.

  10. For the deer, as I explained, the most important detail is that a chip can be stuck inside the body. Today it is a harmless chip that is in the hand and does nothing, tomorrow it will be a pacemaker chip. Believe me, if a pacemaker stops working, the person who hijacked the computer virus will be really sick (even if not with a viral disease).

  11. Perhaps you will tell the truth in the clearest way and without apologizing: there is no connection between the title and the content of the article... the title is wrong and even false - no person is infected by a virus, but the device installed on a person may be infected by a virus and the difference is abysmal. You don't have to be a doctor to understand this, I'm an electrical engineer and understand that this is not possible at all. So please accept the review as a constructive review, in general I really like the site and sometimes there are also downfalls like this article. No big deal, you can always learn and improve, including Mrs. Gali Weinstein. And please don't hide behind gender.

  12. That's right, it's exactly like the chip that my dog and yours have. Only an advanced version, therefore it can also be more "infected" by a computer virus... the chip has been infected by a computer virus. Since the chip was inside the scientist's body when he contracted a computer virus, the scientist himself contracted a computer virus. I mean, it's not that the scientist himself got infected with the computer virus and he got a fever and got flu symptoms for example. The scientist felt that the chip was part of his body, because when you are implanted, for example, with a pacemaker mechanism or a Kuechler cochlear implant, the implant becomes an inseparable part of you psychologically. Then if the implant - which turns out to be a computerized system - receives a computer virus just like any computerized system - the person feels as if he himself has been infected with a virus. It's a subjective feeling. Even though it is a perverted sequence of instructions or a computer worm that knocked out the implant and does not allow it to function properly. So the title expresses the subjective feeling and also a fear that medical systems that are implanted in the body can really stop functioning because of computer viruses. Then you feel that something is attacking you just like you feel when the body rejects a transplanted organ. Therefore, there is great medical importance to research where there is a possibility of a virus in a medical implant that is based on computer technology.

  13. All in all, the article conveys information, maybe the title is a bit spoiled, but the noise surrounding the matter and personal criticism is very excessive in my opinion, on the other hand, bringing up the fact that the author is a woman is also unnecessary.

  14. "If I'm not mistaken" it seems to me that you are quite correct.
And I don't think the chip is smarter than the chips for dogs. The chip is passive until the reader is passed over it which transmits inspiration and then it transmits the identification number.
It doesn't seem to me that even he as a scientist would be willing to live even for a short time with an active chip that transmits RF inside his body just to identify him at the entrance to the university.

  15. If I understood everything correctly, they put a chip on him like my dog has, and then the chip was messed up. And now they are writing a whole article about it with a particularly sensational title. Nice….

  16. Also in my opinion there is no issue here with the gender of the writer and it's a shame that this issue was brought up.
However, as I said before, this whole practice of personal attacks is wrong in my opinion and certainly not the author is behind it.
I say again - substantive comments should be noted. Comments to the author's body are out of place (unless they are themselves a response to a personal attack).

  17. Sorry to interfere in an irrelevant discussion, but I read the comments and there is no connection between the author being a woman and the criticism directed towards her.
Since Gali raised the issue of her femininity in response 4, it is evident that her feminist argument "worked" here on some readers, or they are "recruited". It's just lame to divert the discussion from an objective criticism directed at you to the fact that you are a woman. None of the commenters addressed this, so it's quite "dirty" of you to pull out the gender card and defend yourself with it instead of addressing the claims to their nature.
As a woman myself, this really bothered me, I would not want the content I write in comments on the website to be treated in a special way just because I am a woman. At the same time, I wouldn't want other women on the site to bring up the gender issue when they have no way to respond. It presents us women exactly according to the stereotype of weak, petty and hysterical. Why did you jump right in and say it's because you're a woman? Your attitude does not contribute to equality and even hurts women. As someone who reached the top of the academy, I would have expected more.

I hope that my response will be treated seriously and not for comments about the nature of my nickname. It is, after all, the Internet, and as long as there is no obligation in the website's regulations to identify oneself by full name, each of the website's readers may maintain their privacy and choose a nickname for them. This is not Facebook. A community and discussion culture is still developing here and it is not for you, as a writer, to reprimand the commenters on this matter.

    Avi,
Please note. It is not pleasant for us, as readers, that the discussion of the comments turns into a personal or gender attack by the website writers against the commenters.

  18. To the commenters who disagree (not personally) I usually don't comment on articles, but there is a pattern that is quite harassing and condescending to the writer and not for the first time, if her writing style makes you sad, don't look at her thoughts. Overall, her writing makes science more attractive and accessible to young adults who did not come from an environment open to these issues by using contemporary and modern language, "about taste and smell" are not disputed. There is a rather petty pattern against her and I don't claim this from any feelings of chivalry, probably the reporter perhaps as a woman, disturbs you in a certain way, patience for people from the people, and general selflessness will only benefit us all, take an example from her.
You know, competitiveness is healthy, but sometimes you have to find a niche for laymen, in general science belongs to all of us, because we are surrounded by it above and beyond, in any way we look at it and you know, most of the people do not perform mathematical analyzes on a daily basis.

  19. In a few decades, there really is a risk that computer viruses will endanger human life. There is no doubt.

  20. First of all, thank Gali for the article and ignore the ramblings of the review.
The issue is important and raises an important point about immunity to malicious injuries in the body of people who have implanted devices with the possibility of two-way communication.
Not long ago it was announced that an employee of a company in the United States had maliciously disabled about 200 cars sold by the company remotely.
In other words, the consequences of a virus in a device that is implanted in a human body can reach the point of loss of human life.

  21. Mr. Ben Ner:
The feeling arising from your comments that the author Dr. Gali Weinstein simply does not please you.
And you dig into the peppers. It is true that she has her own unique style, but this is no reason for insults.
You know what, a hair won't fall out of your head if you scratch it, think twice and apologize.
I personally am of Polish origin, but the institution of chivalry was long ago replaced by the institution of common sense and open-mindedness.
So stop being a hard head and move on.

  22. I understand the vulnerability of those who identify themselves by their full name and should bear full responsibility for their words.
Unlike those who don't hide behind a virtual persona, it's easier for me to bear criticism of my words and it's easier for me to criticize others (and when I decide I can change my identity).
However, I don't think there is anything wrong with hiding behind nicknames when it is done responsibly. I also hope that some of the criticisms that have been voiced will receive some consideration

Welcome to the club of those who apologize with their tails between their legs...Welcome to the club
At the same time, it is not clear what you apologized for?
I went through your comments. They are not offensive, they are worded moderately, albeit critically.
    Is it not legit?

    To Amichai Walder. Gali Weinstein
A]. Amichai, you are right in your claim that the original article, on the website where the article appears in English,
It suffers from the same deficiencies I pointed out (in my response #9).
So what ? Is that why the criticism is not legitimate?
B]. Your attempt to claim that the criticism of the article is personal-gender, was rejected outright!!!
It is not true and does not stand the test of facts.
Articles that are presented here by other women, and are of an adequate level, are not criticized
negative, but on the contrary, receive many interesting and matter-of-fact responses and attitudes from the readership.
On the other hand, I've already seen on this site very blatant "cuts" towards men, due to differences of opinion.
Do you propose to grant women gender immunity from criticism?
Are you Amichai too, a Polish knight on a white horse?

  24. True a. Ben Ner and Liza are the same person and I also recognize who he is.
So don't treat him. Just ignore him.
The science site has its good and loyal commenters who respond with great comments and comments and we will continue to refer to them.

  25. Mr. Ben Ner
You're wrong. I think that the English scientist Mark Gesson himself managed to achieve the sensational aspect for understandable reasons.
The author overall gave the emphasis to this matter.
It is not clear what you have against her. Your approach does not seem to be completely objective.

  26. I do apologize.
The message could have been conveyed in more respectful ways. (And I repeat that being a woman has no weight in the review, I would be happy to have more women writing and commenting)

  27. LIZA and others:
It's a bit rude of you to throw insults at the author because you don't like her style.
It is possible that there is a difference between male and female writing style, but this does not impair reading.
In my opinion, it actually adds diversity from a slightly different point of view.
    You should apologize.

  28. to liza
1]. Precisely regarding the content, I have no complaints. The article raises a real issue of protecting RF components in general
    and concretely implanted components.
2]. I agree with what you wrote regarding the presentation of the subject. Again the experience, negative in my opinion, for the show is evident
sensationalizing the subject and creating an artificial and falsified "tension of curiosity" by a distorted presentation of the subject.
This is already evident from the wording of the title "Scientist from the University of Reading: the first in the world to be infected with a computer virus"
It is a wording that tries to create, by means of a spoiled and practically meaningless wording, a misleading impression as if the person is infected,
In his body he is a biological virus that originates from a computer "virus".
I can only express my regret about the style. It is perhaps suitable for the sports and gossip section of the press
The daily but not on the "Hidan" website.
In my opinion, the writer would do well if she freed herself from her tendency to present subjects in a pseudo-
Sensational and will focus on the scientific-technological-conceptual essence of the article in question.
As a practical advice, for the purpose of initial adaptation, I would advise the writer to avoid expressions such as:
"For the first time in history", "First time since...", "A revolution in the field of...", "An unprecedented achievement for..."
    and so'.

  29. Ynet's science channel is not a tabloid! Ynet's science channel is an excellent channel. And so is the science site. There is another woman reporter here on the Hidan website named Yael Petar. And she does a great job.
If you write your full name and don't appear with a meaningless nickname, only then will I agree to answer you.

  30. Liza, when Gali wrote something on a too scientific level, she was attacked as being impossible to understand, when she writes too simply, then they attack her as having no added value, I read the original news, no additional information appeared beyond this report, the experiment is important because although there was no damage here because the chip has no A real role inside the body but the question is what will happen when a chip is attached that will activate a pacemaker.
This is what he is trying to warn about.

  31. Interesting article.
Did he get infected on purpose to be the first person in history to get a computer virus?

  32. jelly:

I have no intention of attacking, and I don't think that being a woman is in any way related to criticism (there are other women who write on the site to whom such criticism is not directed).
I have full respect for you and your academic achievements, and the criticism is not personal against you.
I believe that certain skills are needed that are not necessarily related to academic knowledge in order to be able to present scientific matters in an accessible way to the audience, but at the same time serious and not belittling the readers.
Regarding YNET, first I expect the science site to be something beyond tabloids.
It's hard for me to put my finger on what bothers me the most about writing
On the informative level, I really expected to get more information about the study and some general background material,
And maybe it's mainly the sensational style (the whole article I tried to understand why this is a "revolution in the computing world!")

  33. You should read the original university announcement, the link is above. The article I brought is a report of the original university announcement.
It turns out that the news was also reported on the science channel of the Ynet website: http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3894591,00.html. And they took it from the BBC Science Channel. which is also probably based on the original university announcement.
It is not acceptable for men to massively attack a female writer. A woman reporter appears in the fields of science, so the men immediately attack her with claims.

  34. Nonsense. All in all, he has a chip inserted into his body, there is no mechanical-biological connection between the chip and any body tissue. It's like I'll touch a computer infected with a computer virus and claim that I'm infected.

  35. I agree with the objections voiced on the site against the author's writing style and even the content.
There are a variety of qualities in the articles presented on the site, but this one really falls short of anything I've seen so far.
