A new system has been developed that allows controlling a computer with the power of thought alone. It was developed at Ben Gurion University

A group of students at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has developed a system that allows full control of a personal computer with the power of thought alone. This project was done as part of the undergraduate studies in the software engineering program of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, under the guidance of the head of the software engineering program, Prof. Mark Lest, Prof. Yuval Elovitch, Dr. Rami Pozis and Dr. Lior Rokah. In addition, a patent was filed protecting the developed technology.

The computer is controlled without a mouse and keyboard but through a helmet designed by the Emotiv company, which samples the user's brain waves at fourteen different points using the EEG device. The system, developed by the students, is designed to serve people with physical disabilities that do not allow them to operate a computer by the usual means. In presenting a prototype of the system, as part of the final project conference of the software engineering program held recently at Ben-Gurion University, one of the students demonstrated how it is possible to run computer applications and even write and send a letter by e-mail in just a few minutes without moving a single part of the user's body.
In the future, this system can serve hospitals, research institutes, and people with disabilities in their own homes. In order to install the system, it is necessary to make adjustments to the software with the help of a person who is able to operate a computer using the usual means (mouse and keyboard), but after the initial process the EEG device can be used as a single input device and operate any application. The exceptions are applications that require a very fast response from the user (such as war games such as DOOM).
It should be noted that in the past attempts were made to use brainwave reading for the purpose of operating computer programs, but these attempts mostly included cumbersome devices that can only be used in laboratories. Also, most of the attempts focused on specific uses of the computer such as browsing through a photo album or playing a certain game. So far no system has been developed that allows full control of a computer by reading and analyzing brain waves as described here.

  1. Greetings
I read the article, and heard the interview on the radio about it, sounds fascinating and very promising!
I have a close and dear friend, a patient with ALS, who communicates with you only by moving her right eyelid. It seems that this option may change her life, and the quality of her life from end to end!!!
I would be happy if you could include her in this attempt, and you will receive all the blessings and best wishes!!!!
Thank you and very much appreciated!!!!

  2. If this invention only worked in Israel for 10 years exclusively
I can think of many good things that would have happened to us
More interesting, what are the bad things that would happen to us as a result
One of the good things that happened to us.

  3. This is not something new, control with the help of brain waves is a known thing, but there is much more to stabilize it as an effective method.

  4. Welcome to the future!! In general, you have to take your hat off to these students. Beyond the fact that their future is guaranteed and they deserve every shekel or dollar they receive, much more important is the solution they created, just think how much they can improve the lives of those whose lives up until now have been bitter and difficult. If a person is paralyzed in all parts of his body, but a huge window opens for him in the form of operating his computer, for him it is something priceless!

  5. Sounds great, the first customer in my opinion should be Stephen Hawking!!
I admire him only because of his insistence on continuing to think about complex scientific problems in his physical condition, a thousand percent disability!!

  6. gentlemen It's amazing to me!!! And that's just the prototype of the first generation.

  7. Such a system if it works is worth a lot of money.
