The largest community archaeological excavation in Israel brought hundreds of XNUMXth graders out of their classrooms and into the excavation of the past

It was amazing to see how when you get them off the computer and Facebook they go into work with enthusiasm and of course the immense happiness for every piece of pottery they discover. I can say with absolute certainty that there are many students here who would be happy if they continued digging with me in other places as well," said Dr. Shai Bar from the University of Haifa, the director of the excavation

In a unique community excavation and the largest in the country to date, researchers from the University of Haifa together with school students from the area of the Menashe Regional Council are uncovering Tel-Assur, a Canaanite settlement from the Bronze Age. "We had a lot of concerns, but when we see the enthusiasm, desire and commitment of the youth and, of course, the professional results, we can certainly conclude the project as a great success," said Dr. Shai Bar from the University of Haifa, who heads the excavation.

Tel-Assor, located at the western mouth of Wadi Ara, was excavated between 2001-2003 by Prof. Adam Zartal. Those who continued the project and even pushed in the direction of community excavation were "Itzik's Friends", a group of friends who work in different ways to perpetuate the name of Itzik Dori, who was the secretary of Kibbutz Metzer and was murdered in a murderous terrorist attack in 2002. As mentioned, initially there were concerns from the professional side, but in the end After all, it was decided to embark on a pilot project with 150th-grade students from the Moboat Iron school, which sent 120 students, the Gonim school, which sent 100 students, and the Kfar Pines Studio, from where XNUMX girls came, with students from each school excavating the site for a week.

"The hill is about a kilometer from every school, but until they came to us, the students had never heard of the place once. It was amazing to see how when you get them off the computer and Facebook they go into work with enthusiasm and of course the immense happiness for every piece of pottery they discover. I can say with absolute certainty that there are many students here who I would be happy if they would continue digging with me in other places as well", said Dr. Barr.

As mentioned, the community excavation was not limited to taking the students out of the classroom into the field and it contributed a lot from the professional side as well. The excavators and the students continued to excavate the site's impressive fortification system and even discovered to their surprise, and without anyone expecting it, an impressive administrative structure from the Assyrian period (7th century BC). Also, during the current excavation season, the diggers and students managed to reach a layer of ruins from the end of the Late Bronze Age from the 13th century BC.

The girls of Olfna Kfar Pines are excavating the site until the end of the week - you can come to photograph and interview by appointment

  1. In response to 1:
A proud Arab would identify with his name.
    A cowardly Arab responds anonymously.
I am also in favor of ending the occupation, but apparently we are both thinking of a different way of ending it.

  2. Muhammad, your extremists don't need a reason to rebel, they think that the world from Indonesia to Spain belongs to them and they took it, ate it, drank it. Instead of living in the 21st century, they want to go back to the ninth century. Those who do not want peace but only to conquer the others because their territory was theirs a million years ago, do not have the right to demand respect from normal people in the global era. It is clear that you, as someone connected to the Internet in Tel Aviv, are not ready to accept the country that protects you, so something is wrong with you, not with the country.

  3. Please, destroy and steal the antiquities of the Arab people and invent antiquities under the illusion that they lived here before.
