The smart car is here

Will our roads be safer as the car contains more chips and more IT systems and artificial intelligence?

Car manufacturers around the world are currently working on developing car-to-car communication technologies to help improve driving safety. How will the system work and what difference will the technology make to our driving experience?
A car is approaching a T junction at speed and the driver feels the need to brake. In the corner of his eye he sees a car coming from the left and is on a collision course with his car. Seconds before the almost inevitable accident, the car-to-car communication system sounds an alarm and shows warnings on the dashboard display about the need to stop. The driver slams on the brakes and the car stops right before the intersection. The second car slowed down after receiving the warning about the potential collision and passes unharmed.

The near-collision scenario is a demonstration of technology that is expected to be embedded in all cars - small and large - in the coming years. The technology is being developed by a European consortium - "Car-2-Car" in which General Motors, Audi, BMW, Fiat, Honda, Renault and various manufacturers of safety systems and car computers, as well as a number of universities, are partners.
The group hopes that it will succeed in developing a WiFi system that will share information about the speed, direction and route, and that this will improve safety and ease traffic jams.
Prof. Horst Wieker from the Department of Communication at the University of Applied Science in Saarbrück, said that his goal was to create driving that sees the world. "This technology will allow us to build a short-term and long-term picture of the road transport conditions. "It will now be possible to avoid invisible dangers that are beyond the bend, even many kilometers away before getting into the dangerous situation."
Bruno Freundmandel, Group Director of Engineering at General Motors Europe added: "We are developing uniform standards for the industry to ensure that cars from BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and GM can 'talk' to each other. "This must be a system that will work in all car models from all manufacturers." Proenmandel said, adding however that the system was not designed to replace the vigilance and awareness of the driver.

  1. d. Peretz and Yuval, your "idea" is not new.
It has been in taxis for many years.
A solution to the "hearing" problem:
Option to choose who to talk to through the vehicle's license plate, for example.
Limiting the reception distance will not be effective enough in a multi-lane traffic jam and in a situation where all the vehicles in the vicinity are not in the reception area.

  2. I have also been toying with the idea of conversation between nearby drivers for a long time.
    can create interesting situations...

  3. I'm starting to feel like a serial responder!!
But only three weeks ago I had an idea of communication between cars...but between the drivers!!
It came (as usual..from events from reality) following a driver who approached another car so that the driver could see him and then ask him a question!..I thought it could be useful and good if you had a communication system and so you could ask drivers from all over the area..the problematic point in the story is how they won't hear Everyone everyone!! This requires a distance limit of, say, a hundred meters or less and thus drivers will be able to help each other.
And here it turns out that I was not far from reality.. I wonder how they solved the problem of the many cars.. How will the system understand that the car behind is not approaching from the side? and therefore there is no danger from it!.. In my opinion, there will be a need for "marks" on the sidewalk that will give real landmarks.. it will be possible to bury them in the curb (another idea of mine from the past about 4 or 5 years) .. that is, the curb will arrive ready with the technology in it and allow the car Get your bearings in the space!!
On the thresholds I built a complete concept of total communication including where there is parking (on the road!!) and which restaurants are in the area and if there is space and the menu and more!
    hello sit down
