This snail shape is actually a hill about 50 kilometers wide in Mauritania in the Sahara desert. It is easily visible from any satellite and the Holiday Space Shuttle in orbit around the Earth.
This image was taken by the Landsat 7 imaging satellite. Geologists are not sure what caused the formation of the snail hill but have for now ruled out the possibility that it was a meteor strike or a volcanic eruption.
