Bubblyism, Big Brother and science

Our television people are capable of more than reality shows like "Big Brother". Let's help them bring the things that are really important to us into the living room.

This week I realized that I will never be as famous as Einav Bobalil.

The second season of 'Lema Meh', an Israeli series dealing with science and technology, was broadcast on the cable channel Eight. I participate in the program, as an interviewee on the subjects of history and science. I told my wife that an episode starring me would be shown that day.

"Well done, my sweet! I'm proud of you. When is the episode?" a question.

"Nineteen in the evening."

“Oh.”

Five minutes before the start of the episode, I sat down in the living room next to my wife. There was someone brushing their teeth on the TV screen. I pressed the remote control and switched to channel eight.

"There are five more minutes." My wife pointed out, and before I could blink she returned the previous channel. The toothbrush went away, and now we were both looking at a cute girl with a Dora hairstyle. she is sleeping.

This went on for a while, and then I grabbed the remote. "It's almost starting," I said, switching to channel eight.

"There are still thirteen seconds!" cried my desperate wife, storming the red plastic and handing it back to the girl, who had meanwhile been replaced by a grown man eating a sandwich.

At this point I realized with my sharp male senses that something was wrong.

The fact that the unexpected battle ended in the victory of Channel Eight over 'Big Brother' is only thanks to the fact that fifty percent of the viewers of the house are married to the man on the screen. Even if I know all the formulas of relativity, even if I can quote Nietzsche and Freud in my sleep and even if I can cut DNA. With the teeth and nurse it back with rock and cello tape...I will never be famous like Einav Bobalil.

Let's clarify an important point. I'm not really surprised that a reality series attracts more viewers than a TV show about science and technology. I also don't think that the rating differences between the programs ('yes' vs 'no') say anything about us, the viewers at home. I myself watch another reality show, which I particularly like, and many of my friends - engineers, doctors, managers - also watch 'Big Brother'. The generation is not diminishing. The Israeli mind continues to grow patents for us.

Science shows attract less audience because few are really good. Considerable effort must be invested to make complicated topics easy, accessible and pleasant to watch. The story of the ill-fated Apollo 13 spaceship, for example, has every bit of drama and action that can be found in 'Survivor', but it requires a certain amount of learning along the way. It is difficult to convey physical theories that professors spend a lifetime understanding in the quarter of an hour between two commercials. We will also need to find a suitable replacement for Marina's butt.

I believe that our television people have no problem facing the challenge of producing a fine documentary program. Excellent, diligent and talented professionals work in Israeli commercial and public television. Imagine Asi Dayan and Gila Almagor bringing the drama of 'Batiful' to the story of Andrei and Marie Curie. Imagine Tal Friedman presenting the madness of the paradoxes of time travel. Let Alex Giladi manage this whole business.

Even among the scientists one can find virtuous individuals who have this special ability to simplify the complicated and sweeten the bitter. Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, and Simon Singh are just three examples of such great exceptions. There are such talented scientists in Israel as well, as I can testify from personal acquaintance. You, the viewers, do not know them because you have not been given the opportunity. You didn't know Nint Makrit Gat either.

But the TV people will surely be the first to admit that their talent is being wasted on reality shows. Everyone understands that you don't have to be a genius to push a bunch of people into a big house, a small island or a weight loss farm - and make a TV show out of it. There is no challenge in it. Our editors, producers, directors and screenwriters are capable of more. They want more. They are hungry to make good TV.
The reason reality shows are so common in the world in general and in Israel in particular, is a simple calculation of cost versus benefit. Reality is cheap: no stars, no screenwriters, no long-term investment in production and editing. A science program requires a lot of hours of work, relatively speaking, to produce one short episode. The profit in reality is significant: sponsorships, text messages, open and hidden advertisements and more. The profit from a science program is tiny by any standard. You can't blame the owners of the TV channels for doing mostly reality shows: any of us, in their place, would have made the same decisions.

But we need good shows about science, and we need them in prime time. If we want to make the younger generation not afraid of science and technology, if we want high-tech to continue to prosper - we must invest this effort.
Children do not come to science by chance. They look at the world around them, gather impressions and ideas, and decide what interests them more and what less. Give the children a tasty candy, and they will already discover how to open the bag of surprises. Give them a spark of curiosity towards everything that is interesting and wonderful in the natural world, and the raging fire will break out of them by itself.

In this state of affairs, there is no escaping governmental intervention. The Knesset and the government must stipulate by law that every television channel must dedicate a portion of its prime time hours to science and technology programs.

A total of one day a week, for example, when instead of "The Bay of Love" the amazing series "The Blue Planet" from the BBC will be screened, or (even better) an original Israeli science program. Instead of 'bitch!!', give us an interesting show about dogs.

This idea is not extreme at all, and it is already being applied in other areas of television with great success: the television companies are obliged, for example, to invest specified sums of money in the development of Israeli drama and cinema. It is no coincidence that in the last decade we see more and more excellent original films and series.

The television companies will struggle with such a decision, that's for sure. Every hour of reality TV that is lost is less percentage in your pocket.

But with great power and the power to decide what will be seen every night on the screen - also comes a heavy responsibility. Our children watch Leon, Sabar, Shafra and Yossi more than they see their physics teacher at school. The producers and directors are part of the education system in the State of Israel: unofficial education, but effective and significant no less than our pedagogical education system. They have to take this burden on themselves, and if they don't want to take it, our members of parliament have to put it on their shoulders anyway. They should not be allowed to avoid this responsibility. The children in front of the screen are the future of the State of Israel. They are our future.

Editor's note:

In this context concerning reality shows such as "Big Brother", we note that in 2002 a modest ad was published by the Tenders Committee of the Second Authority in which the public was asked to make proposals to improve the tenders for the selection of the new franchises. Your faithful servant and Prof. Ilya Leibovitch We sent a letter to the committee. The answer we received was: we received your proposal, and the committee will discuss it. The result at least showed that if there was such a discussion, it had no effect on the content of the tender.

  1. I really agree with what was written here in response 21, 25 and 26
    Every word carved in stone

  2. I have an answer to what you wrote - and a question... In preparation for the broadcast of Big Brother, the celebrity version that brings television to the heights in terms of encouraging culture, science and technology, look for a minute at this shocking list of TV programs on the various channels and see how many science programs you find?!

It's a kind of riddle, the answer to which reflects the grade given to television in Israel, to the commercial channels in particular, and to us viewers who have already given up on asking for some sane creation:

Big Brother, Little Sister, (and the soon-to-be Fitzpoona Aunt), Big Brother VIP, Survivor, The Race to the Million, Great (Not So Great) Land, Weekend, Evening News, Afternoon and In Between, Odette and All the Genius Morning Shows, Mystic and Kabbalah Shows Laminhan, spirituality and other mysticism and mystical culture and spirit, life is not everything, a star was born 6-7-8-9-10-100000, screen saver - Amnon Levi, a stepfamily, the Nephilim, at Segev's in the kitchen, the selector, Danny Hollywood, the Israelis, Adi Ashkenazi, American Idol, Smallville Israel, Dancing with the Stars, Heroes, Smallville, Nickelodeon - iCarly, One Against One Hundred, Knife Fight, All South Park Pajamas, The Lab-Iti Vard, Tom and Jerry the World according to Yitzfan The Moomin Home Ground Love Bay Love Around the Corner The Place - Until the Wedding Series Grease The Bold&the Beautiful Naor's Friends Live Well Bob the Builder - BBC Love It Hurts RedBand Down Big 3 Touch Happiness The Kitchen Arthur Reed Doctor Oh Nadi Yu Gi Oh SouthParkZone.com Pucca Everybody Loves Raymond, The Sharks (there are reruns), Big Brother, Gilmore Girls Kirby Crossing All Boundaries Totally Spies Weekend Restless Young People Pimp My Ride The Sopranos Tommy Oscar Thomas The Tank Days of Our Lives My Dear Mother Calbotek Love Around the Corner Barney and Friends How I Met You Your mother Veronica Mars Ranger Central Perfect World Survivor Clifford Powerpuff Girls Whose models is this line? So what did you get? 5 out of 300.
This is the mark of the new culture that we must start fighting!

  3. In the age of Big Brother, the VIP version, in the age of these despicable television and reality shows that destroy the brain - is it the BBC's braniac program or the 'Blue Planet' or few programs from the front of science like there are on channel 8 in Hot, in Itai Vared's laboratory (yes, also in Hebrew We are allowed to hear about science! And it's good that there is a first channel with Itai Vared for that - how sad it is all), and less so in YES, who neglect the field too much - are they part of the huge audience of popular science enthusiasts in Israel? The bubbling television of Channel 2 - the non-state channel destroys every good plot. Now we are informed that the big brother in the VIP version is going on the air. Another sub-level is broadcast in the experimental laboratory of frying the modern brain to the mashed sweet potatoes in front of the television. State television? You made them laugh! Itai Vared, The Laboratory Program, Channel 1? Science? Culture? You made them laugh! Shallow television that educates the youth about celebrity culture is destroying us. Shiri and Amir - Channels 2 and 10 deserve to be closed until they provide some original content even for people with an IQ of more than 70 (according to Yossi Bobalil) who live in a different sphere than programs like Braniac or the laboratory program on Channel 1 which does something normal for a change....

  4. There is a very nice example of a "science" program that manages to appeal to the lowest common denominator,
And I haven't seen anyone who didn't enjoy watching it - braniac.
Admittedly it is not the most scientific in the world, but it is still something.

  5. Amir, it is true that Channel 1's "The Lab" program is really good - Itay Vared is starring

    Shiri

  6. Lair

Of all the commenters, you are the one who wanted to understand the point, mass media by its nature tries to appeal to the lowest denominator and this is the clear distinctions between people if we go through most of the commercials on TV we see the white explaining to the black what to do (Ariel, Leumi, etc.), in the reality show the black represents the ignorant simpleton And who doesn't know how to pronounce "Moshe Meltzer Holon" from survival and Bovilil from Big Brother, while the white represents the beautiful, educated person Noam from survival and improvement from Big Brother. This is how we create two forces that fight each other. Let's go over the representation of the Mizrahi in the program, we will get a guy on steroids and a black worker representing the Mizrahi, the Ashkenazi is represented by Shipra, Zabar and the like and Russia with the sexual connotation represents Ina and so on, the reason I don't watch this program is because I don't want to participate in the racist discourse of 2008 that we were disguised and not done openly as before.
As a challenge to people who think I'm an officer, show me one advertisement in which the Mizrahi is represented as educated and he explains to a clear skin what needs to be done and it's not an advertisement for plumbing...

  7. First of all, distinguish between emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence, Bobalil's emotional intelligence is no less than Shifra's for example and in some points even surpasses it, one way or another knowledge is a matter of cultural conditioning and again here too opinions are divided. Another thing is the difference arises not only between ethnic sectors but also as a generational gap, for example a normative 13-year-old Mizrahi boy is intellectually superior to an elderly person of Ashkenazi origin in certain respects and this has been tested.
Thirdly, you avoid the main issue, the word "bubbleism" carries negative connotations, period. The fact that you are avoiding the matter with various excuses/alternatively being unaware of the issue is your private problem in the analysis of mass media, most of the people called "normatives" who are in the center of the curve or near it, take this designation and usually throw negative axioms at it, therefore it is inappropriate and it is desirable that you change The title of the article beyond that you that a scientist who knows how to analyze things should know more.

  8. Daniel- First watch Big Brother and then you will understand what is being talked about here and why people are bothered by the divine worship and nonsense of the Big Brother residents. This is just a group of people who do not represent the entire population because they are relatively young, handsomer than average, not particularly educated, Ashkenazi and Sephardic and others. And most importantly - the culture is foiled.

I occasionally look at it and disappoint myself because it satisfies my curiosity and voyeurism, but I would rather be satisfied with a documentary that describes the rise to the top of Benazir Bhutto and her murder or about the struggle of remote tribes in South America and not Yossi Bublil or Sabar or Shifar

  9. Ran - response to the matter.
Daniel - It is clear that the "big brother" is not the issue, nor is Yossi or Einav Bobalil, nor the other Ashkenazim who demonstrated in the program shallowness, fooling around, etc. Big brother is part of the reality show and the annoying culture.

There is no racism here, but a clarification of a very important point which is as I see it, that the culture of reality and shallowness should not win even though it is the winner in the competition with the scientific and other programs that do not bring in much money but promote education, lead to knowledge, caring, political and social involvement, action and initiative, for thinking and openness, etc
Big Brother is just a symptom. And Bublil, whether he is Mizrahi or Ashkenazi, exaggerates in his behavior the realistic content of what is brought to us on the screen through the program "Big Brother" and the other superficial reality shows.

  10. Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for all the comments.

    Daniel,
Thanks for the comment - it gives me an opportunity to clarify an important point.
I am free of any trace of racism - in life in general, and in this article in particular. Note that in my article I did not write that reality TV is a *bad* thing. he is not. Reality shows are no better or worse than cooking shows, for example. I also explicitly emphasized that I also watch them from time to time.
My point is that in order to put science programs into prime time, the TV companies should be forced by law to do so - because science has no real chance of competing against the economic incentive to produce reality shows.
Don't get caught up in the term 'Bubbleilism'. It's a nice-sounding name, but only a name. I don't think some denominations watch these shows more than others. In fact, my wife (the Friedmanite) religiously watches Big Brother.

In short: I am not a racist. The article is not about testimony. Please do not confuse joy with joy.

    to birth,
It is true that science programs have never received high ratings. I'm not claiming that they will suddenly become crazy hits like 'Survival' - let's not kid ourselves. I'm just saying that if we want to expose our child to science, the way is to reach them *in prime time*, and not through remote channels in the stale corners of the digital converter box.

    To admire,
Thanks for the compliment. This article does not yet appear as a podcast - it does not fit so well with the permanent concept of my program. If anyone is interested in picking up the glove and reading him in their program - he is welcome to contact me.

Thanks to Abi Blizovsky, whose idea for this article is his.
    Let's hear,
    Ran

  11. My father knows that you did not invent this concept, but I expect from a site that is blessed with people from the field of academia to rise above concepts that do not deserve to enter our language.
Also, the fact that other people use the crawler does not qualify him.
And regarding the argument of the money taxi, intelligence is not only tested by trivia questions.
In addition, I am not disturbed or comforted by the fact that Friedmans failed the test for trivia questions, (interesting that as a result they do not call stupidity as Friedmanism, but that is already a topic for another debate.) If anything, I am disturbed by your response that prefers to look at the individual in order to justify a popular expression, if you replace the words with A Jew and ignorance of money will get a racist reaction that belonged to dark times that seem to have passed "a Jew is not like that because of his origin but because he sanctifies money and sees it as an achievement".
And finally, I would be outraged even if they used the term Friedman to describe a stupid person who, as a nation that suffers and has suffered from anti-Semitism, should have a little more sensitivity to other layers of society.

  12. First of all, I did not invent the term, it has already appeared on the Internet several times and in the same context.

And secondly, no one here meant anything sectarian. For your information, among the Freedmen in the program, there is also a majority of members of the Mizrahi ethnic group.

  13. My father means that I don't watch the show, you may be right, but I am satisfied if you did put the housemates through an intelligence test that determined that Bublil is the stupidest among the housemates, if you mean that he survives for a longer time than the other contestants, he may actually be the smartest..., However, the point I raised is that it does not refer to this or that person at the individual level, but the generalization of a public. When we call a phenomenon a distinctly Mizrahi name, we as a result generalize the Mizrahi public as stupid at best or, as you say, "sanctify ignorance and see it as an achievement".
Also, from your point of view, it means that Jews are at key points in the economic field, so as a result of this, the saying that Jews love money is true and there is no racist tone in this saying.

  14. Again the fracture alarm engine appears. What to do. If the dumbest person on the show were called Friedman, then he would be the standard bearer. Bobalil is not like that because of his origin but because he sanctifies ignorance and sees it as an achievement.

  15. So only Mizrahim watch the show, that's why they call it Bubliilism, or are there also Friedmen who watch the show? And so maybe we call it Friedmanism?, racism even when it is disguised is still racism, precisely from a site like the science I expected a higher sensitivity in the choice of words.

  16. To be honest, it's quite sad that everything is reduced to 2 words "image" and "money".
In the end, with someone who managed to spin an annoying and tiring movie like "Blip" there is no reason why science shows and real science movies can enter the mainstream instead of remaining somewhere in the history channel.
The vast majority of people want the same things they wanted back in Roman times - bread and entertainment. However, making science fun sometimes comes at a price. I personally would rather see people watch Big Brother and leave their brains blank instead of watching programs about alien species that they see on National Geographic and fill their minds with misinformation that they will make sure to use in the worst way imaginable (and just look at the damage that populist and inaccurate information and science has done to areas like vaccines , genetically modified food, genetics and evolution).

  17. you are so right! This is simply a scourge, we are raising a whole generation of people here, all they are interested in are telenovelas, reality shows and stupid shows, we have to put an end to this thing! At least a few hours a week on science topics must be put into these channels, and that things will be presented in an interesting way, it's definitely possible! This is our future, therein lies our national strength as a developed country, science and technology are what give us a relative advantage against our enemy (and not just the human material)

In short, every word is a rock!

  18. Every word is in stone - maybe there is a chance for the science programs if they decorate them with a lot of attention-getters, for example the science news with the great Tal Berman - a combination of a fun, young and dynamic host together with a clever motif and an intelligent program, it is important in the aforementioned era to attract viewers, there is nothing to fight With forces stronger than ours, if you put a science program on prime time, it will open people up to the subject, and make them believe that not only professors from Merier deal with the subject, but that it is indeed an important and interesting subject for the common man as well

  19. On the one hand the writer says that the generation is not diminishing, on the other hand he claims that the current situation will deteriorate our children. When I was a kid (what a scary sentence, given that I'm 21…) there were no reality shows, but there was Power Rangers, Prince Charming, and MTV. Did Channel 8 have a higher rating then than it does now?

It is interesting if and how people like Sagan and Singh influenced consumer culture. Did the ratings of science and nature channels increase following "Cosmos"? Are bookstores now devoting more shelf space to popular science following "Ferram's Last Theorem"? I suspect that if there were such trends, they would be short-lived.

We're more interested in faces than electrons, and that's what we want to see on TV. Science shows that show more faces will inevitably show less electrons. Dramas about the lives of scientists cannot reflect their scientific work like "classic" documentary programs.

If you want to see a significant and long-term improvement in the public's interest in science, you have to raise its social status, like De Beers inflated the diamond market in the last century. It needs to be shown that scientists are cooler and more important than doctors, get more girls than guys and are valued more than just pretty girls by the boys. It is also possible to raise the salary of the scientists, and thus there will be a greater demand in the market for these jobs. Or maybe science can be turned into a closed conspiracy, a mystical religion to which only the elite can be admitted.

In any case, high-tech in Israel is thriving not because people used to go to museums more than now, but because it pays off financially for those involved in it. And as for the weirdos who do science and read the science website... they would do it anyway 🙂

  20. Ran:
According to your story, it seems that the battle for the control ended on Channel 8 thanks to the fifty percent who were the man on the screen and not thanks to the fifty percent who are married to him 🙂

  21. Ran nonsense,

Take comfort in the fact that Channel 8, National Geographic and Discovery are still holding on,
It's really not obvious in today's viewing and television culture...
