The State of Israel recorded a historic achievement when it joined the club of seven countries that managed to put a spacecraft into orbit around the moon. This coming Thursday, Israel is expected to register another achievement, when the Berashit spacecraft will land on the moon, thus Israel will stand in line with the USA, Russia and China in the club of countries that have landed spacecraft on the moon.

The Ministry of Science and Technology congratulates SpaceIL and the Aerospace Industry on the significant achievement and invites the general public to celebrate together the landing of the first Israeli spacecraft on the moon as part of the "Night of Genesis" events this Thursday, April 11, 2019. The celebrations produced by the Space Agency at the Ministry of Science and Technology will consist of extraordinary activities in the fields Man in space, space technologies, family events and more.

The main celebration events to mark the landing of Genesis will take place in several locations in Israel: Kiryat Shmona, Hod Hasharon, Jerusalem, Givatayim and Mitzpe Ramon. The general public is invited to a variety of activities and events at these centers, which include astronomical observation stations, an experiential quiz in augmented reality, which tells the story of the development of space exploration from the first man in space - Yuri Gagarin to "Genesis", taking selfies on the moon, parent and child parties and special make-up stations. The events are open to the whole family free of charge and without registration.

Also, there will be activities throughout the country led by Horizon, the first community of space educators in Israel: Yerka, Nahariya, Emek Jezreel, Givatayim, Tel Aviv, Kfar Saba, Netanya, Rishon Lezion, Meta Binyamin, Zur Hadassah, Beit Shemesh, Ein Nakuba, Modiin, Kiryat Gat and more.

These events are another step to bring the general public closer to the fields of science and space, to raise awareness of the achievements of science and scientists in Israel and the world, and to encourage science education. The events make science accessible to wide and new audiences in an experiential and direct way to stimulate interest and learning in fields that are sometimes perceived as difficult to understand and discouraging.

Minister of Science and Technology, Ofir Akunis: "The expected landing of 'Bereshit' on the moon is a national event! With the landing, Israel will be the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon. This event once again proves Israel's technological strengths and will fill the hearts of all Israelis with great pride and immense joy. It is appropriate that all citizens of Israel, throughout the country, take part in the historic event."

  1. The project is almost entirely a project of private initiative, and it should remain so, without the environmental pollution of the Minister of Science.
